Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics 17 years ago
Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

This obviously refers to sex or some big Hollywood orgy. Mirrors on the ceiling and pink champagne on ice are clearly symbols of wild sex. Devices are genitals. Feast in a big chamber is a big orgy and stabbing with their steely knives is just a 'nice' way to say intercourse. Because Steely Dan named themselves after a dildo of the same name from the novel "Naked Lunch" by William S. Burroughs and Glenn Frey said numerous times that the word steely is a nod to Steely Dan who had previously included the line "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" on their song "Everything You Did". If it is reference then steely knife must mean penis. They can't kill the beast means they can't kill the sex drive because they are so high on cocaine. That would fit in Hollywood orgy, knowing that Hollywood is the most decadent of all places and milieus in California.

Eagles – Frail Grasp on the Big Picture Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is obviously about short-sightedness of our society; three different aspects of it.

First part is pretty much how real journalism is dead and gone in America but that doesn't bother people of thinking they know it all.

Second part criticizes short-term relationships and "Who left the cap off the freakin' toothpaste?" "Whose turn to take the garbage out?" is just down-to-earth view on long-term relationship.

Third part is terrific insight into shallowness of people's religious views.

This is what Don Henley said in one interview was intro to Hotel California.

Here he compares beatiful woman (and cheap one, though) with California (also beatiful but lacks morale).

Steely Dan – Bad Sneakers Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it is basicaly about his (Fagen) life in LA that he bacame bitter about and fearsome of success that would change him. He is talking to Becker about going insane and wants to get back to Manhattan, probably because of to much work with the band and big pressure ('Five names that I can hardly stand to hear' being the inner band and Chimp being the producer) and unexpected success ('Fearsome excavation on Magnolia Boulevard' - big house he is building in elite neighbourhood). Even bad things about NYC look good now: frozen rain, bad sneakers (way too casual dresscode and behaving of New Yorkers - With a transistor and a large sum of money to spend).
Wearing white tuxedos probably means that his partner accustomed to this new life and he hasn't.

Something like that.
