I'm in the situation it seems the song is about...
Girl falls in love with amazing guy. He shows nothing but confidence in her and is always there for her; he is everything she could want. However, she finds that he doesn't love her the same way she loves him, leaving her to find someone like him (I hold the invitation in my hand; You smile and I don't understand when you tell me the writing ain't yours). However, she's never going to stop loving him, as the chorus suggests. The holy light could be the blessing of love (they say in the musical Les Miserables "To love another is to see the face of God") and it seems like she's watching everyone around her fall in love and pair up, though she's left sitting in the dark watching the man get his share of the light. Now she's a bit jaded and teaches herself to "walk backwards out of any given situation". She's not expecting him to love her in a romantic way anymore, though she would gladly accept if he wanted to give her a chance in a relationship or even to offer some closure to what she thought was requited love.
I completely agree; Emilie's older work is overlooked despite the pure emotion and beauty of it. |

Sorry, I forgot something: I also get the feeling that this is what the song's about when she says "you're not a prince" (i.e. not as good as she thought he was), "you're not a friend" (he doesn't really care about her), "you're just a child and in the end you're one more selfish lover" (promiscous boys are very childish and selfish; they're not man enough to have all of a girl, and only one girl, but they want a piece of them all). |

This sounds like what I, and many other girls, have gone through... She meets incredible sweet guy who tells her he wants to patch her up (she mocks him when she says "Pray for me" and calls him a hypocrite by adding "if you dare") and help her find her way, but in the end all he wanted was her body ("You're getting warm"), and she was just another girl to him; she's been through this before ("you're not the first, you're not the last") and so she sees through him when he makes his move ("you're so easy to read but the book is boring me"). She's probably not over him either, hence the "Do I need you... do I want you..." |

I think this song has a hint of sarcasm in it too... "If it makes you feel better, then by all means try to destroy me. Not that I have a heart or feelings or anything for you to bruise." |

I've heard people say that this was an event; 306 people commited suicide and they were all connected, but I can't find any information on it anywhere. I've also heard about the suicides based on the song "Gloomy Sunday"... Does anyone know how many suicides connected to that song occured? If it's 306, I think the mystery is solved. |

I'd like to add to all the comments made about the "The world is full of..." verse and the sarcasm of it (and I agree with all of you) in that the stereotypes of people who commit suicide are artists (especially writers and musicians) and brokenhearted people (especially those who are artists of some sort). Because, you know, only they commit suicide. Everyone else is *perfectly* happy. :) |

I pretty much agree; he was being cruel to or overprotective of her and she eventually said she'd had enough. He got upset and started acting depressed and calling her a shrew and, for a while, she was worried about his emotional well-being, but now she's just saying "whatever".
I can relate all too much... |

I kind of agree with Jareth; it's about emotional struggles WITH GOD after rape. Lyrics such as "you were self-promoted", "you seem so devoted/your love is unconditional", and "where are you when I am screaming to my God 'What am I coming to?'" suggest that she's talking to God. She's doubting him and asking why he didn't protect her. She's also saying that it's hard to follow his laws and the Word of God after what's happened to her, but maybe she'll be able to one day. ("There will come a time when I am stronger/ Your words won't hurt any longer") As for the chorus... I think she's saying that, despite all the things she's said in the verses, she wants him to empty her of everything so that she can remember who she is; a rose is a beautiful thing (and often a sign of virginity or the soul) and she's doubting that she'll be the same again because she's battered (many victims of sexual abuse consider themselves damaged). But she wants to know that she's still a beautiful rose.
I think it's a beautiful song of hope. "I'm mad at you, I don't understand you, and I don't feel like I can follow you-- but I'm hoping you'll pick me up and remind me of who I am anyway, and I know you will because you say you are love."
That's just what it says to me, anyway... I'm going through something similar, and so maybe that's why the lyrics sound like my thoughts. That seems to happen an awful lot when people interpret songs, don't you think? :) |
