Sky Ferreira – American Dream Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song can also be viewed from the perspective of Sky lamenting her record label woes. When she asks "Do what you want, make me into your American Dream... just another part of your mad machine," she's taking aim at the suits who only seek to use her. The "enemy" she's sleeping with is the corporate music power structure that she inadvertently submitted to upon signing with EMI. She's been neglected (no promo), they told her she was unperfected (not ready, etc.), and now she's "let go."

This is really Sky grappling with the confines of "almost success," wondering if she should "throw it all away," and feeling as though her handlers and peers had "taken" her melodies (style, literal melodies, and persona).

Thanks, Madri! I was kind of wondering, since "in a museum" didn't make much sense, ha! Changed it.

Why not both? It seems like he's so lonely that he's willing to seek company and intimacy through casual sex. I just found out about this band, and I'm surprised I like Gust's songs so much.

M.I.A. – XXXO Lyrics 15 years ago
Is she talking about hooking up with someone from online? Haha. Maybe the nature of 21st century romance, and how technology has de-personalized love and relationships?

Florence + the Machine – Girl with One Eye Lyrics 15 years ago
In my opinion, the speaker is describing a girl whose heart he broke, causing her to be cautious for every man that came after him ("Now she sleeps with one eye open").

When the speaker describes taking her "eye" home and watching it die, it's meant to symbolize the speaker easing his way through the girl's defenses, making her feel comfortable and safe with him. The "Don't worry, it's not gonna hurt" line seems to be referring to him taking her virginity, but it could also be seen as more broadly as him loving her. Once again, he's making her feel safe by promising not to hurt her if she enters a relationship with him.

In the end, he breaks up with her out of spite for something she did that he didn't like ("I'll cut your eye out because you made me cry").

Just my interpretation! Does this make sense to anyone else?

Sheryl Crow – Love Is A Good Thing Lyrics 15 years ago
It seems like Sheryl's listing the social changes she had been witnessing, and offering up love as a solution.

The line "Mary, Mary, quite contrary/ Close the door now/ It's much too scary," symbolizes the world's willingness to try and ignore pressing issues like violence in schools and an unjust court system. The world would rather close the door than face the "much too scary" problems facing them.

Jenny Owen Youngs – Here Is a Heart Lyrics 16 years ago
I know this could easiley be about a romantic relationship, but have any of you thought of it as literally her taking care of a dying loved one? Seems like maybe the song is taking place in a hospital room. "Sleep like the dead through the noise in your head/My monitors click and whir and glow" Maybe Jenny is watching someone (parent? family member?) dying and wants to go with them, or "crumble at your feet."

yes, definitely an emotionally abusive girlfriend. i think it's partially methaphorical, though. mean to fuck with your perceptions of gender. listening to a song about a girl abusing her boyfriend gets you thinking.

I always saw the chorus as a sarcastic "fuck you" to the boyfriend that makes her act this way. I never thought she was actually saying thank you.

I think it's talking about feminism, and the evolotuion of women's place in society.

Tori Amos – Flavor Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems like a commentary on the war between religions. Talking about choosing between a religion based on fear, and one on love. Then talking about the different religion's gods wanting jurisdiction on earth. I think the whole fear/love thing is meant to play with the listener's belief that religion spreads love.

I"ve heard some people say this is about Suazanne Vega, who signed a major record deal. This song is so great. It's nice to know some people prefer dignity over wealth.

a great feminist song! telling all the men that she's in control, despite what they think.

Liz Phair – Fuck And Run Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is pretty straightfoward, just someone who keeps letting themselves be taken advatange of, and then wakes up wishing they hadn't slept with the person. It's searching for something more. And to everyone who talks about Liz's new career, fuck off. She's at a different point in life, she's married with kids. Of course she's not gonna write about fucking and running.

Liz Phair – Soap Star Joe Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, it's Liz critisizing the way America feels men should act. She's saying most american males feel like they have to save a woman, as if women couldn't save themselves. Liz is just showing how pathetic men who go around looking for something to save are.

Fiona Apple – To Your Love Lyrics 17 years ago
to me, it's always been fiona apologising for not being what her lover expects her to be. the person she's with has less scars, and less pain than she has. it feels like she's warning him that she's gonna cause him pain. kinda like a disclaimer to being with her.

Liz Phair – Never Said Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always thought of this song as a girl denying being promiscuous. I can see pepper's view as well. To me, Liz is responding to someone telling her they heard she did something with a guy. I also always thought the "I ain't done anything wrong" line said "I'd hate to let it turn you on."
