American Dream Lyrics
I'm learning lessons from making mistakes
If I get burned no embers break
You told me I'm your destiny
Somehow your power gets the best of me
Repeatedly I get neglected
You claim that I am unperfected
Now watch my frustration grow
And wonder why this girl let go
Do what you want, make me into your American Dream
Say what you want, it's just another part of your mad machine
Make what you want, who can I blame?
You're all the same
Is it just me, sleeping with the enemy?
I've travelled 50 states of miserable
I walk on through the intolerable
Emotions blink, no landscapes change
A map between a rock and a dark place
I might be alright
I could be okay
I don't think I would try to throw it away-ay
Oh-h-h-h
Oh-h-h-h
Do what you want, make me into your American Dream
Say what you want, it's just another part of your mad machine
Make what you want, who can I blame?
You're all the same
Is it just me, sleeping with the enemy?
If you prescribed anything
Numb reality and bring
Back to me those melodies
That you always take from me
Do what you want, make me into your American Dream
Say what you want, it's just another part of your mad machine
Make what you want, who can I blame?
You're all the same
Is it just me, sleeping with the enemy?
Oh-h-h
Oh-h-h
Do what you want, want, want, want, want, want
Do what you want, want, want, want, want, want
Into your American Dream
Your American Dream, Dream, Dream
Do what you want, make me into your American Dream
Say what you want, it's just another part of your mad machine
Make what you want, who can I blame?
You're all the same
Is it just me, sleeping with the enemy?
If I get burned no embers break

This song is about how fame can be hard, and how people judges famous people but at the same time we make them our American Dream, we admire them but when they make a mistake we judge so hard, "Repeatedly I get neglected You claim that I am unperfected Now watch my frustration grow And wonder why this girl let go" This means how we claim that they are not perfect and how we do not value them, her frustration is because not matter how hard she trays she will always be criticized... Sky wrote this song for Britney, I think is better for Britney, it fits to her so much...!
I think this song can also be viewed from the perspective of Sky lamenting her record label woes. When she asks "Do what you want, make me into your American Dream... just another part of your mad machine," she's taking aim at the suits who only seek to use her. The "enemy" she's sleeping with is the corporate music power structure that she inadvertently submitted to upon signing with EMI. She's been neglected (no promo), they told her she was unperfected (not ready, etc.), and now she's "let go."
This is really Sky grappling with the confines of "almost success," wondering if she should "throw it all away," and feeling as though her handlers and peers had "taken" her melodies (style, literal melodies, and persona).
