The Jesus Lizard – Lady Shoes Lyrics 7 years ago
hahahhahqahaha.

ok whew, just had to start cracking up as I was reading these lyrics for the first time. I'm very familiar with the song, just had never any idea what yow was singing beyond the more obvious mother comes in / dr comes in / look what I've done. We all assumed the lyrics were going to be quite strange, but the perversity here goes well beyond even my wildest dreams. Of course, needless to say this is a good thing. Absolutely hilarious these lyrics. I also have to rethink my vision of what a live show would have been, given the knew knowledge that has come to light; terrifying indeed.

Misfits – Night of the Living Dead Lyrics 7 years ago
One of the great Rock and Roll opening lines of all time.

Ok, even if the "correct" lyric is somnambulance--which, I am assuming it is (probably confirmed by lyrics published in some album notes, likely confirmed by evidence found in the Romero film -- I would make the point that "stumble in some ambulance" is simply a better lyric than somnambulance. Powerful imagery indeed. It puts you right away in the very thick of the apocolyptic carnage. Sleepwalking!? no, theres no place for that in a misfits song (well, perhaps Halloween 2 or Cool Cough) this has no place in.

But either way, song gets me hyped like a fucking maniac every time i hear it. Dude you know fists are gonna be flying as your hear "RIPPED UP LIKE SHREDDED WHEAT"

@[SongInterpreter:15733] dude that is a ridiculous stretch. No evidence to support these connections you are making. The song is about scubadiving plain and simple. The animals and fish are literally animals and fish. The trick--spinning upside down under water. But also the danger of scubadiving is obvious, you literally need to stay focused on safety, whereas getting lost in the beauty of the aquatic can be quite dangerous. Advertisements? businessmen? Nothing. No mention of a need for change if you don't like your life. Dude you are amateur hour, go comment on a lesser song please

@[devilcricket:15729] agreed. too many seem to be focusing on that line about marijuana. I think it brings a sense of reality (of the here and now, the everyday, the normal) to the song. Copious amounts being smoked is pretty standard issue for rock'n'rollers.

Ramones – 7-11 Lyrics 7 years ago
wow. what a masterpiece of later ramones. Definately pays homage to the early sixties hit Last Kiss. Also found the several references to earlier Ramones to be nice. Like the electronic Echos a after blitzkreig bop-b-b-op -op op. This song along the lines of Dany Says. Hard to believe this was written by the same guy who gave us 53rd and 3rd and chinese rocks

decay and failure of optimistic postwar society that was exemplified by London in the late 50s and sixties.

I think the recorded lyrics for the track are slightly different from what is presented on site.

the sun's zooming in => The suns at an end
london is drowning => london is burning.

the change is probable the result of the CBS feeling the actual lines are too subversive, (ie too "violent", too "dangerous")

Taking these differences into accoun we find the song becomes more potent in its symbolism, underlying meaning and general tone--and this way we find that it also fits more harmoniously in tune with some of the broader themes and images that permiate through the entire album. meaningsthe

The Clash – London Calling Lyrics 12 years ago
of course Great song, always my prefered cut for introducing someone new to the clash.

Typically, if I am listining to this song it is likely the alternate version which is found on the vanilla tapes (london calling 30th aniversary ed), which I find to be much superior. That version has some completely different lyrics. These seem far more bad ass than the ones they settled on, although I am not exactly sure what Strummer is singing here.

London calling!
to the fools in the crowd (or perhaps 'to the fools and the crown')
??? -{line that is completely uninteligable to me}
london calling--we're the kings of the south--hated all over, kings of the mouth

well you get the picture. My humble request is for someone with a more discerning ear than mine to post a definativve set of lyrics for this version of the song.

Wow, still going strong. Might as well add this one to the list of all-time Rancid greats. I am truly grateful that these guys still believe in rock and roll.

Anyone else think that Tim actually does hiccup just once while singing this track?

About the clash, from Mick Jones perspective, about the world they knew, about becoming well-known and famous, and about the entrepreneurs who market and sell rebellion and punk rock. Intelligent, well crafted, honest story in song, like so many other from Jones and Strummer.

Good song. I agree about Phantom limb, definitely tighter than phantom now. Also, for a while I thought it was "need more body cause I need more drugs". Oddly, this made perfect sense to me. Pretty clear now that they are saying "Need more money..." and probably makes more sense too.

Japandroids – Art Czars Lyrics 13 years ago
Holy shit, wow! Back in October I saw these guys play in Hoboken. At that point I had yet to listen to this song, which in hindsight was actually a good thing, since I would have been devastated by its absence from the set-list. Oh well. Have it in good faith that next time around this glorious anthem will be part of their arsenal.

For me, this is the Japandroid's best song-writing yet. Truly, a rock and roll song that would make the Clash proud!

FRom Post nothing and No Singles, I entertained the idea that the Japandroids are keenly aware of the dual-nature of their sound. One part of them wants to bash out quintessential punk rock, fast and pure, like from Zen Arcade or the Ramones. But also part of them wants to have a sound that is a little more wide open. Here they take their foot off the gas slightly and float for a while through the either. Now they can pedal themselves along as though on a long bike ride, only, it is not pedals, but their music that propels them, and they can speed up or slow down as they see fit.

I am not sure how they view this duality, although my guess would be they are essentially at peace with it. But at times it is possible they conflicted over how they should play; perhaps also feeling pressure not to alienate audiences/fans who strongly preferred only a single end of the dual-spectrum.

So maybe this song is partially a response to people at both ends saying "forget about labeling or conforming to an established genre niche...Here we are...Now come on boys and girls, LETS ROCK!

The Clash – Four Horsemen Lyrics 13 years ago
It took me a while to realize this song's brilliance, but now for me its one of the highlights of London Calling. I'm glad Sloee added the outro lyrics, because for me the Four Horsemen of the title are in fact the Four Horsemen of Rock and Roll. Definately. The Clash, the Pistols, Elvis, the stones--in general just any rockers, past, present, and future who changed the game by the way they rocked.

At the Drive-In – Transatlantic Foe Lyrics 13 years ago
Let me begin, as I often do, by saying that this is an amazing song from an amazing band. I'm not really sure what this song is about. Up until now I had always just guessed at what the lyrics were, and it appears that I was wrong. But still I'd like to share my fragmented and certainly incomplete understanding about the nature of at least some of the lyrics for Transatlantic Foe.

First, there is the direct nod to the great Beach Boys record Pet Sounds.

Concerning part of the chorus, I always thought it was "savior is up the hill / drinking [inaudible] through movie stills". Savion Glover, as I only just learned by reading Upsetter's post, is a famous tap dancer. The Savion name-drop and other clues lead me to think that the movie TAP is what's on the muted black & white Tv. I've never seen TAP, but after some very brieif research, I am beginning to think that the film may likely offer further insight about the song. I can't say for sure what the parallels are, but going out on a limb I think that Roger Ebert's review of the TAP may touch upon some of the potential connections.

Finally, there is the item of Russia. Its only a suspicion, but I have the feeling that somehow the song is indebted or inspired in part by the films of Sergei Eisenstein. These are silent films, classics from way back that deal with Russian history and the Russian revolution.

Also, somewhere in the song is a girl.

Basically, from these central ideas, I wonder the song was somehow a reflection/mediation from ATDI about how they viewed their own music.

Times New Viking – The Wait Lyrics 13 years ago
This song could be about the age/social gap between the band and the people who listen. PErhaps at first it strikes as a little strange that there could be such a connection, but then goes on to accept the bond as sincere and very much something that is at the core of us.

Yeah, I'm right there with ya. A lot of bands cover the misfits...never heard anyone play a superior version.

And btw, there IS NO Misfits without Glenn Danzig. I don't care what those others call themselves, they're definitely NOT the misfits.

I tend to agree with Christa426. To me this song is straight science fiction...along the lines of Coheed or Deltron 3030. It's thought-provoking along the same lines as most science fiction writing; but I don't think it was intended to be a specific cometary on any social or political themes

Rancid – Last One to Die Lyrics 14 years ago
I really like the acoustic version of this song.

But anyways... it seems pretty clear to me that this song is basically Rancid saying: "hey, we always just did things our own way and we always knew that was the best way and even the only way to go about it. Along the way there were a lot of people who said 'no rancid, you're doing it wrong; you should be like this; or you should be like that'. But now that we've been doing our thing for twenty years--making music that we love and that our fans love--and maybe there are some others out there who, given a similar situation, would have stopped making records and stopped touring and playing shows at smaller venues... But not Rancid... because what we do now is similar to what we've always done--playing punk rock and connecting with people through our own music--it's what we set out to do in the first place and its what we still do and its what we love doing.

The Strokes – Hawaii Lyrics 14 years ago
First of all, this song rocks; currently one of my favorite Strokes songs. I'm pretty sure that the lyrics here, as for most lyrics posted on this site, are incorrect.

In response to ActlikeRomans, I agree that for this song the Strokes totally stole the riff from the organ part in Tally Ho. I have no problem with them doing so; actually, I'm glad they did because Hawaii is a song that really moves me. The lead singer does an excellent job with the vocals, particularly at the song's climax as he seems to have channeled the ghost of Joey Ramone quite perfectly.

I too did not discover this song until just recently -- my copy of Is This It has New York City Cops instead of this song. I must say, it is a damn good song that's been stuck in my head ever since I heard it.

Previously I could never really understand the lyrics. After reading them I sense that this song has to do with fame and the changes that come with being ultra-famous.

Rancid – Poison Lyrics 14 years ago
One of the best songs on what is, in my opinion, the best Rancid album. I love the
backing vocals--sounds like Lars and Freeman--particularly how they counter Tim's "some people are poison" with a "poison" of their own.

It's been five years since the last response, but it would be helpful if someone might confirm if these lyrics are a direct copy of the lyric printed lyrics that came packaged along with the album.
I wonder only because sometimes the lyrics seem remarkably accurate, so much so that it seems unlikely they could have been deciphered by hearing alone.

For instance, I always thought the first verse was something like

i'm living in my own catacomb
in a room full of flies
and I cant find the gold

however, when listening very carefully and more importantly, knowing what to listen for, it seems the lyrics on this page are, I am fairly certain, what is actually being sung.

But there is one line when things don't match up. It could well be that these are the "correct"/"official" lyrics, and the difference I am hearing is merely a characteristic of the bands performance.

Rancid – Blackhawk Down Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it is a mistake to analyze this song, along with others on Rancid 2000 on an individual basis. To me, the album comes across as a fairly coherent concept album.

It is somewhat of an oversimplification, but in a nutshell I view the album as being centered around the a main theme, which is ANGER.

Anger is something we all deal with. Anger is experienced in many different ways; people deal with their anger in their own ways; and of course there are many different sources and reasons behind ones anger.

The Stooges – Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah, this is the best song on the album. The opening riff is sick--a classic in and of itself. I have always just kind of made up my own lyrics for this song because, frankly, any set of words or jibberish that a listener might decide to slur would sound awesome with this riff. Personally, I have always thought the opening line was "a dirty dance and a dirty look"...and... "if you wanna make a buck"

Japandroids – Young Hearts Spark Fire Lyrics 14 years ago
I have a slightly different interpretation of this song. It seems plausible that the song is about living the rock and roll lifestyle, which, as kids, they used to dream about. This lifestyle, which they are now living, consists of hot girls, drinking and cocaine--the later of which they are "too drunk to feel it". They used to worry about how they would support themselves as adults; now, however, all they worry about is ODing on booze and drugs.

T. Rex – Metal Guru Lyrics 16 years ago
well said Thor, when you said his songs had minimal meaning, but maximum impact.

And old fogey, I think their is some truth to what you are saying. But isn't rock and roll meant exactly for school-boys? -- if not, then who?

True, his lyrics don't hold much meaning -- per say -- then again, neither do the Beatles. Actually, Bolan's lyrics have held up better than the Beatles.

Think about it: For the Bennifit of Mr. Kite; Lucy in the SKy with Diamonds; Yellow Submarine...

Last but not least, though i'm not sure where you guys are from, but me, I'm American, and Bolan singing about Cars, drugs, and loose women (as he was on Slider) holds up better over time than a lot stuff, simply because it is so minimalistic
