I just discovered this song today, and it touches my heart deeply. I've always had the greatest of respect for the protectors of peace, and an even greater respect for those who have made the greatest sacrifice in the name of peace and freedom. |

I have to agree with Ezduzde in regards to the meaning of this song. I also think I can relate to it on a more personal level. I tend to bottle up my anger until I basically "break my cage". |

DarkenRahl, here are Bruce Dickinson's exact words on the meaning of "Tailgunner":
So I write it about real tail gunners. I had some words which began 'Trace your way back fifty years, to the glow of Dresden, blood and tears'. I know we shouldn't mention the war but it's about the attitude of bombing people. It was real death in the skies back then. But there aren't any tail gunners on planes anymore, it's all done by computers using missiles. At least it used to be man-on-man, but now it's machine-on-machine. Who uses bullets anymore? |

From www.maidenfans.com:
This is a swordsman's song, undoubtedly inspired by Dickinson's love of fencing. The lyrics hint of a young swordsman in training, so that he can avenge the murder of his family. |

| Iron Maiden – Tailgunner Lyrics

This song has nothing to do with being gay. It is about the job of one of the crew of a bomber aircraft had to do. The tailgunner's job was to shoot down enemy fighters coming in from behind the bomber. Here's what Wikipedia has to say on a tailgunner:
A tail gunner or rear gunner is a crewman on a military aircraft who functions as a gunner defending against enemy fighter attacks from the rear, or "tail", of the plane. The tail gunner operates a flexible machine gun emplacement on either the top or tail end of the aircraft with a generally unobstructed view toward the rear of the aircraft. While the term tail gunner is usually associated with a crewman inside a gun turret, tail gun armaments may also be operated by remote control from another part of the aircraft.
