| I've been listening to this song a lot lately. I love the intensity of it. I think the reason why it is so intense is because it's supposed to exemplify that devotion he has to this girl. I think the reason it's called "Torch Song" is because this is obviously a "flame" of his as it were. It burns so furiously inside of him. He'd give absolutely "anything" to be with her. He knows though that she's going to betray him. That's why she keeps "angel wings pressed under glass." His devotion and obsession of her being the object of his affection will drive him to any lengths even if this will be the death of him. | |

I'm sort of shocked that no one's discussed the song's story or at least I guess how I hear it. I mean in the monologue he spells it out. Maybe everyone already knows which is why they're not discussing it? Anyway, the song is about modern day star crossed lovers and their double suicide. Listen to the music. It has a very dark and eerie sound it. I can't tell you what everything means word for word but I'll try giving a thorough explanation haha But the lyrics "Watch the stars turn you to nothing" (like "star-crossed" lovers (think Romeo & Juliet) aka: a relationship that's doomed from the start) I think this is also a double reference to them falling under the sky at night. It's seeing her fall under the stars to her death. "Now blush and smile as they whisk you away" I think this is the agreement of the suicide pact. They're whisking her away because she isn't meant to be with him in their eyes. other lines like "Part your lips a bit more. I will swallow your fear. I will show you how." Are a reference to the fear of dying. He will "show her how." This means He will commit her to this pact as he has himself. Then the chorus. City lights, like rain Dance and explode Fall upon debutants Reeling from nights that Kiss and control All of our broken hearts The city lights are the ones he and her will see as they fall to their death but I think it's also a reference to the light shed upon their relationship. The relationship was a "dance" and it did "explode" "fall upon debutants" as they haven't performed for any of us tells us they're young (again think Romeo and Juliet) and haven't ventured outward yet. But a debutant is also someone making their debut usually in professional career or into public (in case you didn't know). This entire suicide is being viewed as a Hollywood movie. These city lights are like the movie lights to their own scene. They're "debuting" actor and actress in their movie and to the public in that they're jumping off a building. The lines "Reeling from nights that Kiss and control" the reel is a reference to a film reel (the Hollywood glamorization of suicide) and the kiss and control all of our broken hearts line is the fact they don't know what to do because they can't be together but can't be without each other. They can't control their broken hearts from being torn apart so they'll kill themselves together so that they may die in the way we romanticize love and the glamorization of young suicide ( "Velvet burns wrists while restraining. You blushed and smiled and said you would stay" She's having second thoughts,there's a struggle as she's wearing velvet and it's burning wrists as she tries breaking his grasp on her wrists. He won't let her stop this. He reminds her she already agreed and said she would stay. (and my favorite part) Notice how the music picks up (particularly the guitar) right here and it gets more intense. Notice the distortion. "One more time steal my breath I'll feed you the sky. I will show you how. Steal the glamor from death and before you die..." He's saying kiss me before we fall. He will feed her the sky as they soar down. He will hold her as they fall. The glamor of a young couple dying. In the monologue he's discussing the fact that their dreams of being together will burst in the light (the stars) and death (suicide). They'll burn like Hollywood stars as they descend rapidly into the ground. The city lights will dance as they watch them going who knows how insanely fast. Anyway, yeah, I think I'm pretty spot on here but tell me what you think. For whenever the next person within 9 months responds lol |

I think the meaning of this song isn't too tough to figure out. It seems that this song is about a guy who happens to care about a girl who doesn't care about herself and he tries to play her savior. He realizes that the pain she suffers from goes incredibly deep and that not even he can help someone who doesn't want to be helped. The introduction is to say he knows he's playing with fire to some extent. He knows this could break him but he's trying to be careful "with just one mis-step I go under". "Such a beautiful mess" Yes, this is how he sees her. She's magnificent and gorgeous in his eyes but she's so broken inside that she is a beautiful mess indeed. I think the "in a sin tight dress confess and bare it all" May be referring to some sexual relations he had with this girl and the fact that she's a liar. "Confess" your lies. "Scream through dreams that cut your voice off wide awake will nothing soothe? with one word I'd take this pain from you but I'll fall mute" This pain haunts this girl to no end. It keeps her up at night. He's saying I'd give everything I can to help you but it'll drag me down too. Hence why he'd go mute. "Seems the sweet sixteen went sour so long ago" portion is referring to that she was a very pretty girl but there was more than meets the eye. "The evening gown was cleaned" she was ever so pretty and they tried getting her help "but the slip always seems to show" but she felt ever so ugly about herself inside and it didn't work. Seems this also may indicate she had some pretty horrible high school experiences too. Maybe an eating disorder, self-mutilation etc. etc. "I heard you cry in my distance I heard the lies through all the tears I was denied and left distant I heard you fell, well, I'm still here I heard you cry in my distance You fucking lied Well, I'm still here" He saw the good inside of her. He saw something beautiful in her dying to get above water. He tried as hard as he could to be there for her. He held as she'd cry all the while lying through her teeth. As close as he held her though, she was still the deceptive liar and wouldn't even let him too close to her. This is why he was denied and left distant. And while she still continues to make horrible decisions and mess her life up, he still cares very greatly about her. And through all her actions she'd continue to push him away. This is why she's so far far away. |
