| The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think the point of the song is not about sexuality or sex, i think it's about feeling inadequate. The lines : 'And Sorrow's native son He will not smile for anyone' are about him not being able to change for anyone, he must be accepted for who he is, though he doesn't think that who he is will be what the woman wants. I think that 'And Pretty Girls Make Graves' is saying that pretty girls make the graves of the men who idolise them but don't believe that they are good enough to be with them, Killing them not literally but emotionally. when you cannot access something that you crave so intensely you are in way dead inside wih the longing. 'Then, on the sand Another man, he takes her hand A smile lights up her stupid face (and well, it would)' This is again about him feeling inadaquate. He can't smile for anyone but someone will and that person will seduce his pretty girl and take her away. '(and well it would)' he's not suprised. |

| The Enemy – We'll Live And Die In These Towns Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| It really represents the feelings of post-industrial working class britain. The hopelessness and desperation brought about through the decimation of industry and the livlihoods of so many midlanders. I don't think the line 'we'll live and die in these towns' is literal its not about the place its about the attitude. If you don't change your attitude you will die this way. You have to help yourself, if you do there are plenty of people to help you. | |
| Skunk Anansie – Weak Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think it is about giving everything to a lover who then proves to be an absolute bastard, regardless you cant help loving them but you tell yourself you wont cry for them because of your pride. the verses are about the things that you do when your guard is down 'because i wanted you' is the justification for letting yourself be hurt, the chorus convincing yourself that you won't waste your tears on them. |

| Skunk Anansie – Tracy's Flaw Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
it seems quite clear that skin is the Tracy character, her flaw is that she will exploit those who love her purely because she knows that they will be around to pick up the pieces when she falls. Although it seems to be a lover that is being addressed throughout the song i think there is also a feeling that she is addressing a mother figure. If you look at other skunk anansie songs such as 'selling jesus' and '100 waysto be a good girl' There is eveidence of rebellion against a strict religious up bringing. I think that there is this feeling that she has failed because the standards that the person set for her were impossible to maintain. There is a definate bitterness relating to the pressure that was put upon her to be 'a good girl' and a feeling that she is expressing all of her indiscresstions before they are used sgainst her in a messianic salvation gesture that is always accompanied by a reminder of just how much of a bad girl she has been. |

| Kate Bush – Oh England My Lionheart Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I feel that it is about a yearning for an England that no longer exists, an arcadian paradise;the so called albion, a longing for the beauty of the past, or how we remeber things were when we were children and how we become more aware of flaws and therefore become more cynical towards such images. The beauty of Kate's work lies in the childlike innocence that she still possesses which allows her to create such beautiful, poetic, dreamlike imagery. It is a passionate and inspiring song which makes me proud of the wonderful heritage of my england. | |
| The Smiths – Handsome Devil Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| could the whole child abuse thing be a reference to Oscar Wilde's apparant penchant for young boys. Oscar Wilde being one of Morrissey's hero's and all, jst a thought. | |
| Echo and the Bunnymen – Bring On The Dancing Horses Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think that the song is about an average man struggling to express his emotions because of the fear that they are not enough. I think it relates to a relationship which has run its course but neither party can bring themselves to admit their failure. The lines: 'shiver and say the words of every lie you've heard' are about the point of self realisation when the 'I love you's' become meaningless to both hear and to say. I think that the phrase 'Bring on the dancing horses is simalar to saying ' it's not over till the fat lady sings' the horses signify the end like the four horsemen of the apocolypse they appear when the relationship has run its course. This is only one interpretation. I think this song has so many levels it would be impossible to explore them all. Is it about rebellion against a religious upbringing who knows? |
