i had to comment to say that the first time I heard this I thought it sounded like tom kalnoky too. op ivy obviously came first but i agree. i like this part:

my self worth was beyond any help
and i didnt care to test it against the rejection i had seen before
sometimes it feels like you're stuck in what you're in and all you have is your ideals because it's not practical to just radically change your life, but the fact that Jesse Michaels sang this kinda gives hope because you can feel like that but you can still, at least for a while, come out of it and do some fucking cool things in your life. |

This song is about a girl he know who kills herself. If you follow along with the lyrics it makes perfect sense. it foreshadows death from the very beginning, mentioning "someone there who mentioned that they hoped that it would rain forever, forever, so they could drown in peace."
he hears this on the way to the girl's place, and when he gets there, ringing the doorbell "forever, forever" implies that he could literally ring it forever and she would never answer because she's gone and can't come back, and that's why now he's sad all the time.
"Today was the day but she threw it all away" this line is the differentiating point between the song being about suicide and just being about not having a girl. it doesnt fit with the latter. He can't understand why she did it because he saw them as similar people, trying so hard and never giving in. The difference is that ultimately, life got to her and she did give in. |

pretty straight forward but since theres no comments ill explain for anyone who wants to hear it.
The first verse is about greedy rich people who indulge theirselves instead of helping to solve the worlds problems. they keep it all to themselves.
The second verse seems to be talking about someone who has nothing becuase of a gambling addiction. "you can't change a turd into gold" is kind of a strange line but it means you cant just go make some bets and win money to solve all your problems. it doesnt work like that. |

WEll, though pretty much the whole album is about God, I think this one is about the decil. Think about it. He says "God damn that man" theres no way you could be saying that when talking about God Himself. So its about how he hates the devil and all the sin he made and how he cant get rid of it. |

I saw that website too that said it was the most rousing suicide song ever and i was like "no, they wouldnt write about that, this is just anothe rone of their songs about leaving your hometown."
BUT
now im not sure because ive found some evidence that its about suicide.
-first is that he is usually happy about leaving, and doesnt go on about how bad things are, but rather glad that hes leaving them behind.
-This is something he cant get away from. its like he keeps running but it doesnt go away.
-he mentions it being cold, but i dont have much to back that up with other than it fits in with the suicide theme more than leaving something behind and moving on.
-Lastly, people who commit suicide usually don't want to die. they just want to escape their problems and dont know how else to do it. As he says, "It's the only way I know." |

Why are there no comments on this song??? This is in my opinion the best less than jake song there is. The lyrics are amazing and its probably thir best guitar song.
doesnt need a lot of explination, just that he's at a point in his life that he can't stand and he's not who he used to be anymore and he hopes everyone remembers the old him because he doesn't like who he's become so hes about to let it all out. |
