| LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great Lyrics | 18 years ago |
yeah, the video does imply death of a girlfriend, as well as friend to others. the lyrics make sense for a breakup, though, but i don't buy the abortion thing at all. it's about how after the loss the speaker feels the strong presence of the absence of "someone great," if that makes any sense. |

| Pixies – Mr. Grieves Lyrics | 18 years ago |
heh, i think it could be about a serial killer. mr. grieves is the perfect name, isn't it? the song has a frightening sound to it, as well, with the insane laughter and all. the adults pass him off as an urban myth, but all the children believe in him. "hope everything is alright" adds a pretty eerie question, because obviously everything isn't -- floating in the water is the body of a girl! mr. grieves would ask you some trick question before he killed you, then scream, "do you have another opinion?!" after that he would cut off your face. (and bomb/freeze/hang you) and the creepiest part would be that he would cry when he was killing you. anyway, of course, frank black did not mean it this way, sigh. way cool, though! |

| Sufjan Stevens – Chicago Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this has a kind of modern feel of transcendentalism to me. sufjan touches on intuition with "all things know". he also 'transcends' beyond materialism with the line "we sold our clothes to the state/ i don't mind," reminiscent of thoreau's quote, "sell your clothes, keep your thoughts." even though he has made a lot of mistakes, he "recreates" himself and "grows". one of my favorite lyrics is "it was for freedom/ from myself and from the land," showing that he is separating himself from physical trivialities to rise above spiritually, really, even, separating from himself to find the ultimate solitude and peace. in the end, all things go to the "oversoul," a concept i don't take as religious, but rather intellectually and thoughtfully. the repetition emphasizes the importance of mind and individual perception. on another note, i used to think it was "all things go/ to the creator" instead of "to recreate us," haha. |
