| Melanie C – Yeh Yeh Yeh Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| On first hearing this I misheard the "I've got expectations of gratification" line as "all the expectations have gone on vacation". Still cannot decide which of the two variants I like better, Melanie's or mine. :) | |
| Bob Dylan – Lay Lady Lay Lyrics | 16 years ago |
On the "Hard Rain" live version of the song alternative lyrics are sung: "Forget this dance, let's go upstairs ! Let's take a chance, who really cares ? Why, don't you know you got nothing to prove, It's all in your eyes and the way that you move. Forget this dance, let's go upstairs ! Why wait any longer, I don't mean to complain, You can have love, but you might loose it. Why run any longer when you're running in vain ? You can have the truth but you've got to choose it." |

| Bob Dylan – One Too Many Mornings Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Here is the additional half-verse from the "Hard Rain" live album: I've no right to be here If you've no right to stay Until we're both one too many mornings And a thousand miles away |

| They Might Be Giants – Older Lyrics | 16 years ago |
For GefoMutt : The non Mink Car version is from "Long Tall Weekend", an online-only album released in 1999. It also appears on "Music From Malcolm In The Middle" soundtrack. Btw, I looove the part when Flansburgh roars : "Time is marching on, And time..." ..then there is that silent moment of intense antici...pation followed by the "not-quite-expected" "is still marching on !" conclusion. A hilarious example of playing with the listener's expectations. &:-D |

| Genesis – Wot Gorilla? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
According to http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podshows/3737871 : "Wot Gorilla?" is a reference to touring drummer Chester Thompson being namechecked on "Florentine Pogen", a track on Frank Zappa's 1975 album "One Size Fits All". Thompson performed drums on the track, the outro section of which features the repeated vocal phrase "Chester's gorilla". Btw, this is a rare Collins/Banks collaboration, not unlike some of the instrumental music by Brand X. |

| Melanie C – Positivley Somewhere Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song has Melanie looking back at some aspects of her life, one of them being her musical career. If we look at it from this viewpoint, then "Nobody beside me" means that she is now a solo artist (no longer a part of a group), a status which she enjoys. She is finally free to be herself and spontaneous ("back in my own skin"), the artificially created Sporty Spice persona ("someone they want me to be") having been ditched for good. Personal happiness is found in a sunny day-by-day existence free from making elaborate schemes for the future or worrying if the new record will sell well ("I'm here going nowhere"). She loves being "a big fish in a little pond" ; if her commercial success is now diminished, it was a small price to pay for the personal freedom she attained. And yet again, we can ignore all of this and view the song simply as a celebration of being a single woman (or being finally free from an eating disorder, for that matter). "That's all behind me now" – a similar idea of breaking up with the past and not looking back reappears in many songs on "Reason", it is almost a common theme of the album. |

| Melanie C – Melt Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"The eye of the storm" is a small peaceful area in the middle of a cyclone where there is no wind, just like that safe haven of our early childhood when we are still unaware of the "storm" raging outside (i. e. we are not told the truth of what the world is really like). But as soon as we tentatively pop our little noses out of this protected area we experience the clash with a harsh reality and its hardships (or atrocities, if you will), and some of us "get broken" in the process. Then again, "broken" might refer to someone who was physically or sexually abused as a child, but this is a risky path of interpretation which I am reluctant to follow right now. Melanie is possibly singing this as a positive message of hope aimed at a fellow musician or a performer (after all, "airwaves" are referenced), maybe even at one of her former bandmates from The Spice Girls who is embarking on a solo career ("Now is your time to rise"). She advises them to establish a balance of giving and taking and, while using the music as a medium of sending hope, to be a little selfish as well and make some money for themselves (at least that's how I understand the "Find a little bit of gold" line). She appeals to them to open their heart and render it "meltable", to break out of the shell and become more susceptible to emotions and build their confidence at the same time. This being only my own take on the song, lines like "I know why you sent me" and "Feel me" remain unclear to me (the former seems almost like a part of a prayer). Still, I just may be closer to the point than smellyspice. This is my favorite song off "Reason", so melancholic and dramatic and hopeful and warm all at once, with a sweeping, anthemic chorus and a wonderful guitar solo to boot. |

| Queen – Tenement Funster Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Roger Taylor has written an amazing string of songs with slightly naive, yet endearing lyrics (there is roughly one on every Queen album, more or less) with such fascinating hipster-favoured topics as cars, shoes, hair, records, girls, rebelling youngsters and other aspects of rock iconography. Alongside with "I'm In Love With My Car" and "Drowse", "Tenement Funster" is one of the best of the lot. It's funny how for a long time I thought that the words went "Such a sad situation just cuts like a knife when half of the world ain't crazy (Come and get crazy)", it even became something of a motto for me to live by. Only today have I realized (with amusement) how it really goes. Never mind, Roger still rocks, not least because he inspired me to set about writing a brand-new-blockbuster-song-of-mine around the misheard lyric. &:-D |
