Just thought I'd post an absolutely beautiful, very different live version of this song she performed. Seriously worth a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW0pV9FioFA&feature=related |

Really hard for me to explain, so bare with me: In terms of depression, it could refer to life feeling like an empty, black sky with nothing really worthwhile in it. The stars are like the friends and family who help you through it all, and just anything that helps keep you going. But there aren't even any stars out in this person's world. It's just pitch black, without even starshine to light his way - he can't find his way out, and no one can find or help him. He just feels way too deep into it to think he there's a hope of making it out. With the 'jumping up' line, that could also be a failed attempt to get out of this depression, but only ends up showing him how low, alone and insignificant he is. I'm not sure about the line "stand easy with my self, with myself" though. Maybe something about how it's easier to be by himself than actually being with someone else? Or him not admitting he needs help, trying and failing to help himself. I really don't know, just pulling that out of the air, lol. I think the simple, rambling nature of the song also shows how numb, overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted this person is, it's like they can barely even function anymore. Like when you're so overwhelmed with an emotion you're practically speechless. I feel like a bit of a wanker writing all this about a song that's like 7 lines long, but oh well, lol. It's a bloody good song. Haunting. |

"Long time no see, although I see everything..." Ouch, I reckon this line pretty much shows just how small Ziltoid really is, in the grand scheme of things. |

| Just found out in ancient history today, 'Thalamus' was the greek word for 'wedding chamber' which makes sense. | |
| Joanna Newsom – Sprout and the Bean Lyrics | 17 years ago |

But I don't know. It seems too happy to be about abortions. When I listen to it, I interpret it more as a child wanting to grow up without having to put the work in, and wanting to be a kid at the same time - as well as the adults in her life being conflicted over which they want for her. “I slept all day, awoke with distaste” (Sleeping in school & being woken by a teacher) “and I railed, and I raved” (not wanting to be at school, obviously. Having a tantrum.) “That the difference between the sprout and the bean” (a woman and a girl. Or, to be even more childish, a girl and a baby. She may be a whole 7 and a half years old or whatever, but being a sprout isn’t far off from being a bean. She still has a long way to go) “is a golden ring, it is a twisted string.” (Engagement and marriage. Pretty much the childish obsession with marriage, and wanting to be grown up in an easy way, through becoming married like in a fairy tale, without having to work at it through school.) “And you can ask the counsellor; you can ask the king; and they'll say the same thing; and it's a funny thing:” (Another fairy tale reference. Instead of going to real people for help, she's stuck in her own little world looking to stories for guidance.) “Should we go outside? Should we go outside?” (As the councellor/king's answer, this reflects that men, who have grown up, want to be children again, showing her how foolish she is for wanting to grow up too quickly when there's so much about childhood to savour and look forward to) “Are y'interested?” (are you really interested in school? Are you more interested playing with me?) “And as I said, I slept as though dead” (The idea of death sort of reflects how much there is to experience in life still) “dreaming seamless dreams of lead.” (school and life is weighing heavily on her mind, draining her of the energy she actually needs to play and be a kid. This sort of points out how adults want their kids to learn and be clever, but to be able to be children at the same time and you can't always get that balance) “When you go away, I am big-boned and fey” (she feels grown up and strong when there are no adults around? As for fey, as in ‘whymsical, supernatural’ etc, basically now she’s using her imagination now that no adults are there to tell her to grow up or be a kid and she's free to let her mind wander naturally) in the dust of the day, in the dirt of the day (using her imagination from whatever’s left of her after school’s drained her energy) |

the abortion theory's actually very interesting. In regards to that, someone mentioned “Big boned maybe referring to being pregnant?”. In that sense, the previous line, 'when you go away' could refer to her considering an abortion because, tying in with the whole 'golden ring', 'twisted string' marriage references, her partner has left her pregnant and alone, and she doesn't think she can raise the child on her own. Also, the verse with the councellor and king saying the same thing: 'should we go outside?' could refer to the fact that she really needs help with this decision, but it's such a taboo subject that when she asks even a king for guidance, he simply changes the subject. |

I can't really disagree with the love theme of Alien, but it was a stretch for me personally to view this song in a romantic sense (for want of a better word). I can definitely see what you mean after looking further into it. I suppose it can sort of represent the solving of a dispute between a couple, and each of them putting their differences aside and just believing that they'll work out. I think in this context, the 'believes' would be about what people do to solve fights, whether they concede and beg for forgiveness ('bow to your knees'), or distract themselves with a garden or hobby, generally saying believe in anything that will stop you from walking out of that relationship. Contrary to 'Love?', the persona of the song comes to a realisation that HE is in control of his life, not his partner and not the fact that he's in love, the line 'of my faith in us' just assures us that he's not saying he's in control of the other person either, just himself. But I looked up Thalamus, and it looks like it's about the senses and sleep and stuff. Didn't see anything about aggression. Sciency stuff confuses me, so I couldn't say exactly what the Thalamus is/does, though, lol. |

"Cold and foreign, spirit broken... PLEASE can we go home???" lol, MeowMix. (The tune) But yeah, I love this song. Just an argument between a couple, going over the typical things said ('I'm not yelling', etc) along with correcting stupid statements people often make (as kid-44 said about the 'product of that environment' bit). I think the cliche-ness (lol I fail at english) of it is sort of intended, since arguments between couples often escalate to the same bullshit once you can't even remember why you're arguing. The song's similar to Shitstorm IMO, in the sense that it's nice and simple, expressing things that commonly come up when couples fight. |

Will someone tell me what the fuck this song is about? I love it to death, but I'm completely clueless. |

| Strapping Young Lad – Shitstorm Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I love this song, mainly because to me it's tasteful, simple anger, rather than random crap anyone could make just by screaming for half an hour or yelling about killing people or any of that shit. It's just anger, plain and simple, and talks about the usual shit people feel and think when they're just blindly pissed off and not thinking clearly. | |

I always thought this song was about a woman who was beaten and raped by a stranger, then found unconscious. Mainly because it repeats 'are you ok' so much, possibly regarding the long-term damage rape does to people. I sort of imagined it to be coming from various people, since a lot of people because of the ‘would you tell US that you’re ok?’, and showing how everyone asks the same question, which in the end is an obvious ‘no’. The 'I don't know's I always thought were coming from Annie herself, reluctant to speak about what happened to her, as many rape victims are. Also the mention of the bedroom. Just as a general comment, I also always thought the whole ‘he came in through the window ... it was her doom’ thing sounds more like it’s coming from a cop or something rather than someone who found her, like a cop talking to the guy who found her/Annie herself trying to figure out what happened. Definitely don’t think she knew the guy, since he came in through the window (and the ‘crescendo’ I always thought was just her screaming at the sight of him/at the pain and shock of being hit) |

| The Killers – Somebody Told Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Dunno if this has been said, but I always thought of it as a guy trying to pick up a girl in a bar, but not knowing what to say to her, so he picks something ridiculous in an attempt to find a conversation starter ('Somebody told me...' yada yada yada). Either that, or the guy is mocking her boyfriend and saying she should go home with him instead. |

"If he doesn't believe in God, why would he be talking to him???" They’re not robots either, but they still wrote Sentient 6. More on topic (I don't know much about the band or their beliefs, so bear with me) I interpereted this song as a man who's been through tragedy ('why did you take her away?') and now questions why god does what he does/if he exists, etc. Sort of saying 'why would any god do this? He can't exist' and asking him all these questions as to why bad things happen (like, is it that he can't hear them or that he doesn't even listen? etc), and basically mocks the concept of religion ('we fall into spaces blind' etc). Sort of a religious man abandoning his faith as he realises (for want of a better word) how illogical it is. (Wow, I’m articulate -cough-) But ugh! I love this song! I wish we could analyse /this/ sort of stuff in english (as in the class). |

| Nevermore – The Heart Collector Lyrics | 18 years ago |

But looking at it in a more generic way, it's most likely the stage actor references are a metaphor for something else, not the other way around. I think it might be refering to basically any comfort a person seeks when they're just down in the dumps (whether about a relationship or something else). And saying "The heart collector sings his song again" is basically saying 'life is pain and you'll be feeling this crappy more than once'. |

| Nevermore – The Heart Collector Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Wow, I think I've thought about this song too much. I've got a bit of a warped interpretation here. Basically I was wondering what the stage actor references meant, and I came up with this, lol. Basically, I think 'heart collector' can be seen as a metaphor for an actor's ability to make people feel how he wants them to feel. "Just believe when you can't believe anymore" - suspension of disbelief. "I own your tears anyway" - the actor is the one who made them cry and therefore ‘owns their tears’. "and I am you and we are not afraid" - again, just controlling how the audience feels. "And I won't be feeling hollow for so long" - an actor may have a hollow life himself, but when he's able to slip into someone else’s shoes, he doesn’t. Same goes for the audience. "The corrupt eclectic takes his fatal bow" - fatal because the play is over and his character is essentially dead until the next performance. "And we won't be here for long" - we won't be in reality for long, because we (the audience) will be taken on a journey (the play). Then when the line’s repeated, it can mean that the play is over and we're heading home. "The heart collector sings his song again" - he may be able to be someone else, but only while he's performing, and he's always going to be performing the same story (song). The problem with this is it’s switching between 1st 2nd and 3rd person doesn’t really make sense for this interpretation. But hey, it was fun to switch it around for a minute there, lol |
