Bob Seger – The Famous Final Scene Lyrics 5 months ago
This comment is about watching a movie, which is famous, without understanding of subtext. You watch it, take what happens literally, and you are not smart. So the movie ends, and you understand it as 'the famous final scene.' That is all, nothing more. Anyone who suggests there might be more to it is immediately dismissed with a 'no!'

Foghat – Slow Ride Lyrics 10 months ago
This song is about a guy with a car that won't go over 15mph. The car has a flat tire. He gets impatient, remembers when he first got the car and thought it was 'so fine' and hits the gas. The tire goes 'thump, thump, thump', and eight minutes later he arrives at his destination.

Iron Maiden – The Prisoner Lyrics 1 year ago
@[Eversio:46605], you are ever sio correct!

My own thought is that 'The Prisoner' is a metaphor for purgatory, and 'Number 6' is between heaven and hell. Each beginning, along with the dialogue "what do you want?" "Information (double-meaning, In Formation i.e. 'get with the program and join the rest of us!') "You won't get it!" Each beginning includes the Lotus being followed by a hearse, the driver is a mortician, approaches the front door and gasses the main character. Each episode, he wakes up fully dressed, doesn't need a shower or shave or normal bathroom business. 'The Prisoner' thinks he is a free man and has free will. But check out his 'breakfast order' in first episode 'Arrival' where the order is at his table and served, just as he makes his custom request. Is he really exhibiting 'free will' and ordering what he wants? Hmmm.

Great song, great show!

Cream – Strange Brew Lyrics 9 years ago
The producers/co-writers of this song (with Clapton) were married. Gail Collins shot dead her husband Felix Pappallardi, and was convicted of negligent homicide (not murder) and served two years of her four year sentence. When the jury returned the verdict as less than murder, the judge admonished them for being gullible. This was in 1983, and the '70s through '90s in the U.S. had a strong influence towards trying to "understand, rehabilitate, and reintegrate" criminals. And with a crime rate that doubled from the 1950s, and sociopaths using all the buzzwords to manipulate the media and public, society was stuck with ridiculous decisions like a 2-year sentence for shooting your husband.

The song is still a movie soundtrack stape, and Gail Collins makes money off it every year.

AC/DC – Big Jack Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is about the Jack Reacher character in Lee Child's books, and now movies. He's a 6'5" for military policeman, all the ladies come to see him and all the boys want to be him. He is a frighteningly violent streetfighter, who doesn't care about the law or custom, he only cares about what is right.

I think about AC/DC and their involvement with soundtracks for 'Iron Man', 'Private Parts', writing the song for 'Last Action Hero' (Big Gun), and that is partly why I think this is the song meaning.

Judas Priest – Sinner Lyrics 10 years ago
"War raises it's head, and slowly looks around." "Uh"? "Well"? Really? "War" is mentioned twice more in the lyrics "smell of war and pain" and "carcasses of war". Not seeing the Crowley thing, he is like Che Guevara, James Dean and Jimi Hendrix, all much more popular today than they ever were in their time and the legend is much greater than the men ever were.

The "30 years now sleeping" is so obvious, only recently hit me as the time between the end of WWI (1918) and beginning of WWII (1939).

Of course that's what the song is about, listen to the words, read the lyrics, watch the band's video. Your message is in 2013, this song was written when Communism was still threatening to sell the West the rope with which to hang ourselves, and threatening atomic destruction. You probably weren't even born then. Glad the song got it wrong.

War – Why Can't We Be Friends? Lyrics 10 years ago
Excellent analysis, and this song really reflects the time it was written and recorded (1974). If I may add, the "CIA/Maf-I-yay" rhyme references a common (and often correct) suspicion among Black Panthers, the John Birch Society, the 'Mafia', KKK (and today militias, the Occupy movement, etc.) that there are informants among you/us. The recent revelation that Al Sharpton was an informant for the FBI against the Mafia is interesting, especially since he traded that deal for not having to inform against the Black Panthers. (FBI would have been the correct reference, not CIA, but CIA rhymes and FBI doesn't...hey, it's music!):-)

What a great song, super dance song, very sexy, one of my favorites from the '80s.

The lyrics never meant much, until it happened to me. My first, betrayed, bewildered, so much happiness and then...removed from my life. So, now when I hear it I think not only of fun parties and great mix tapes, but also pain and loss. Also, fantastic bass line.

btw, the correct lyric is "Just like Adam & Eve, the SERPENT SET ME FREE..."

Cat Stevens – Tea for the Tillerman Lyrics 13 years ago
ThomYorkeGuy, why should Cat Stevens' religion and nationalism have nothign to do with the songs of his past? Because you SAY SO?!?!! That is very Muslim in your thinking, trying to tell everyone else what to do.

Cat Stevens is the one who turned his back on this body of work, and made his religion a big deal and approved of the fatwa issued on Salman Rushdie. "Peace Train" indeed, Cat Stevens is a silly prat who is rightly mocked. Charles Manson wrote songs, should we all just "shut up and listen to them?"

I meant the USSR. If communism didn't implode, thanks to Reagan's persistance, Russia would not exist and the USSR would continue oppressing citizens and neighbors alike. Have you watched the video? Extreme – Am I Ever Gonna Change Lyrics 13 years ago
My favorite Extreme song, very heavy music. Didn't listen to the lyrics for years, because the song felt so good and heavy. But my new digital system, and a few years behind me, have allowed me to reconsider many songs and the lyric messages.

This song is pretty humble, not something heavy rock is known for. It speaks of frustration, and disappointment with oneself. Whether it is being unable to handle one's pride, or drinking/drugs, or respecting relationships, or the will to do what is necessary to achieve a goal, it is a question everybody should ask at some point. Admitting that behavior, thinking, work ethic, etc. is not working is a big reality check. I love this song even more for this message.

Toto – Hold The Line Lyrics 13 years ago
Anybody ever been in a relationship with a great person, it looked like a keeper on paper, yet...it just wasn't destined to work out? One person is a little more eager/desperate than the other one to stay in a relationship that is going nowhere. The other person is good-looking, smart, kind, has a good job, is responsible with their money, generous, and best of all likes you. But the mix just doesn't turn into a real committed love. So, you "hold the line", an expression used in military and football, meaning don't give up and keep trying. That's what this song is about.

btw, if you have been around long enough, you have been on both sides of this situation. It always ends a little sadly, but my experience is to let it go before the good feelings turn completely to resentment and frustration. Love, indeed, isn't always on time.

Cat Stevens – Oh Very Young Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about the impermanence in life. This is a tenant of Buddhism, I wonder if Cat Stevens explored this before converting to Islam.

I'm not so young anymore, but my goodbyes to people, places and good situations do not ever get easier. I do like to hang on a bit too long, willing to "patch" things or figure out a way to make the 'goodbye' something other than what it is. There is a feeling of loss, when something good ends; and things are not infinitely improvable, so the risk a young person takes is not always evaluated properly. Great song, liking all the thoughtful posts coming before me. Cheers.

Motörhead – Iron Horse/Born to Lose Lyrics 13 years ago
small correction, the song is "die has been cast" (not dice), a metalworking term.

Have enjoyed Motörhead since the '80s, but only recently been listening to the lyrics. Hard to understand through Lemmy's rasp (and my sketchy sound system), but the loneliness and desperation and defiance all come through. Sometimes the only salvation is to rock hard, and ride free.

Billy Squier – Lonely Is The Night Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is about depression. Which, btw, often leads to behavior like excessive sleeping, watching TV, wanking*giggle*, etc. The song is actually kind of encouraging, lines like "you're not the only stranger in this town", "nobody's stopping you", "are you ready for a fight". It is a tough condition, easy to get into and tough to get out of. Squier's lyrics are really a cut above most of the '80s bonehead rock.

He seems like an intellectually interesting person, and it is too bad his music career did not sustain much past the late '80s. I had read and heard mixed things about him personally, that (like many artists) he is difficult and moody. Recently saw him perform in 2006's Ringo's All-Star band DVD, and the clips of him talking were quite revealing. He takes himself very seriously. I like his music, and the DVD is worth a watch if you are interested in Squier these days. Cheers.

Genesis – Land Of Confusion Lyrics 14 years ago
Ironic the thought that this 1986 song would slag Reagan, when the rest of the world was rolling over to the USSR and Eastern Bloc countries. Ronald Reagan was the only one demanding that the USSR "tear down this wall!" in 1987 and it happened in 1989. All the other European countries were wringing their hands, not wanting to upset anyone (never mind the totalitarian governments of Communist Eastern Bloc countries).

If we all took advice from Genesis, the USSR, East Germany, Romania, and 10 other countries would still be under the bootheel of communism. The freedom to play any music they want, and make millions of dollars, come from the men and countries brave enough to stand up for that freedom.

Nazareth – Hair of the Dog Lyrics 14 years ago
Great song. Was lucky enough to see Nazareth in their prime in the '80s, and this song was a show highlight. Never really thought much about the words, but the past few years I have been enjoying satellite radio and the sound clarity is so good that I can actually understand what the words are. This song is one that took on a new meaning.

My thought is similar to Lizardking1971's. The expression 'Hair of the Dog' refers to taking a sip of alcohol the morning after tying on a bender. The booze (in theory) helps smooth out the recovery from the hangover...I can say from my own experience that it doesn't work. This urban myth comes from an old wive's cure that a dog bite would heal better if clotted with dog hair. This song seems to refer to a very selfish woman who runs into her flip side. Not a pretty relationship, but maybe that will cure her ill behavior.;-)

In any event, this song is always a crowd-pleaser and I always turn it up in the car. The sound effect is indeed a 'talk box' like both Frampton and Bon Jovi use, and the live version of this song includes Scottish bagpipes. Funny White Chedda mentioned AC/DC, because they also used bagpipes in 'Long Way To The Top', and the Yhoung brothers and Bon Scott ware from Scotland just like the guys in Nazareth.

Gerry Rafferty – Baker Street Lyrics 14 years ago
People get trapped by their past, and trapped by desires for the future.

This song is perfect for describing that feeling of dissatisfaction. Drinking, one-night stands, another year, giving up these things we know don't bring us happiness, all these distractions and bargains we make with ourselves. But in this very moment, happiness is always hard to come by.

Gerry Rafferty also wrote "Stuck In The Middle With You" by Stealer's Wheel. Another song about limbo, emotional purgatory, indecision. I have heard these songs for decades, yet only recently understood the words and thought about their meanings. Nice.

Great song, heard it for years and only recently listened closely to the lyrics. British blues at its finest. The singer James Dewar has such a clear and deep voice, perfect for these melancholy lyrics. Seems like a guy has been screwed over by his girl and possibly/probably a friend of his. Took his love, his woman, his money, his friendship. Takers get the honey, Givers sing the blues. Oh, yes, how true.

The Rolling Stones – Get Off Of My Cloud Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a great driving song that gets me psyched. But the lyrics reveal a narcissistic selfish twat that Jagger truly is. He wants to be alone? He's in show business!! If he really wanted to be alone, he would have done what Gerry and the Pacemakers and Herman's Hermits did. Instead, he whines about his neighbor who is (rightfully) complaining about his loud music at 3am, or getting a ticket for sleeping in his car. Put on some headphones, why do you have to impose yourself on the rest of the world with 3am loud music? Why would you drive downtown just to sleep in your car, unless you were an attention-seeking clown? Well, you got a few tickets, so pay them with your rock star cash and leave us all well alone.

Other than that, love the song.

King Floyd – Groove me Baby Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow. This is one of the few songs I hear and do not EVER switch away.;-) There is an interesting technique with the bass, and some of the lyrics, where it falls just behind the beat. It causes an anticipation to the listener, trying to hear something that isn't there until a split-second after it should be. This is the first time I heard it, and it became quite popular with disco songs like Rod Stewart's 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy'. I like the unbridled vocals, makes me wish I could sing like that!

Great White – Face The Day Lyrics 15 years ago
The lyric is "...raining in a world of TRAITORS"

This song is about depression. As years go by and it happens to you, or someone you know, this song takes on a whole new meaning. Great White put this cover tune (originally done by Australian band "The Angels" or "Angel City" as they were known in the U.S.) as part of an EP when they lost their first big record contract. "Stay Alive in '85" was their motto and tour, then. Women, record companies, fans, even fellow band members, it was all pretty depressing for the band at that time.

Anyway, I love this song and it fits just right for those moments of loneliness, betrayal, despair, and hopelessness that seem like they will last forever. Fortunately, they never do. But the song is great~!

Ted Nugent – Stranglehold Lyrics 15 years ago
Actually, St. Holmes sung it "better CROSS your face", as in sign of the cross because this ho-bag, who is getting it from the backside, is in such dire condition as she better start praying.

"Stranglehold" is Ted's arm around her throat, as he enters and delivers from the back. She's going nowhere, and he is in full control of the situation. The entire song is an aural and lyrical sexual experience, although I think Ted is flattering himself that he could last as long as the song. But the ending windup is the part where he busts his nut, rolls off the top, and pulls his jeans back on.

Similar to Foghat's "Slow Ride" in that the song is so clearly about f******, and a musical interpretation, yet very few seem to grasp this. There is a post where somebody said they got in a "mood". Well, that is what this song is all about.

Judas Priest – Sinner Lyrics 15 years ago
Great song, heavy and I especially like the break where the song slows and the vocal phaser is used.

I think the song is about "war" in general, and my hint is the "30 years now sleeping" as the treaty signed in haste by Athens, with Sparta. Sparta was becoming a huge and powerful nation-state with trade and logistics and a smart population ruled by military, and Athens was a cradle of artistic and philisophical enlightenment; you can guess which side was afraid of the other. The sinner is Mars, the God of War, who required a "sacrifice" from farmers and citizens each year or else war would return.

That's my two cents! \m/ \m/

Duran Duran – The Reflex Lyrics 15 years ago
Just finished Andy Taylor's "Wild Boy: My Life In Duran Duran" and it is a really great, honest, and fun read. He notes that "The Reflex" is his favorite song, but is quite open to interpretation. He thought it was about a young boy, but could be about anything. It was produced by Bernard Edwards of Chic, and had a very cutting edge repeat/stutter effect that the record company objected to, calling it "too black." So the remix is actually what the band wanted the song to sound like originally. My favorite Duran song, as well. Cheers! \m/ \m/

Fireball Ministry – King Lyrics 15 years ago
Fantastic song, even without a message. One lyric correction, s/b "if I was born a believer, unbelieving."

My thought is that it could be about MLK, Jr. or Jesus, JFK (King of Camelot), etc. "The jury couldn't win" means that even convicting the assassin doesn't make things whole, and there is nothing left but to "close the coffin door."

"A believer, unbelieving" describes my own feeling when Acquino was assassinated in the Phillipines stepping of a plane in 1983, Sadat in Egypt as he watched a parade in 1981, Bhutto was assassinated, just last year. Many more attempts, those were just the successful ones. I couldn't believe it when all those happened, it was shocking to me ("unbelieving").

I also like Sour's take, that the song is about issues as "King" personified by an individual that would "fall again." Totally makes sense. Anyway, great band and great song.

I read Nikki Sixx's 'Heroin Diaries' too, and he claims a lot of stuff that only a deluded egomaniac would claim. Saxon – The Thin Red Line Lyrics 16 years ago
Jesus, this song is so sad. Great bluesy riff, I could listen to a 20-minute version. But in the end, I just think of the brave heroes who did what was right and fought for something greater than themselves.

When I look around me, at the Gameboy playing, iPhone texting, Taco Bell eating, DVD watching children who take for granted all the freedoms and options and choices, I wonder if they ever think twice about the ones who came before to fight and defend western civilization.

Ah, Saxon is almost a pejorative at this point in our time, but the band is a cut above and I love this song's feel and message.

Also, the song title is taken from a 1957 movie made by Orson Welles, starring Charlton Heston. Fantastic song, too good for most metal fans. Video involves very different scenarios including a religious 'snake-handling' service, a clip from 'Freaks' (look it up and rent this classic) with a midget showman, a young child mesmerized by....a beautiful woman? The band? The orchestra?

Personally, it can apply to a woman I knew was bad for me, to drinking that 'one too many', giving in to a temptation. Check out the 'live in Japan' clip on YouTube, it is a great performance piece done with keyboards offstage, the crowd really responds!

Def Leppard – Waterloo Sunset Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is so sad and lonely, but it is great! 'Terry and Julie' reference British actors Terrence Stamp and Julie Christie, who were a real-life couple while filming 'Far From the Maddening Crowd'(1967). This song represents the feeling of a depressed person staying home, alone, dreaming and fantasizing about the people he sees coming and going from the tube station. He makes himself content with a sunset, but Waterloo station is as ugly as any industrial area. Claiming he "don't need no friends" is what really gets me, because the line infers that he has no friends, or that his friends have betrayed him; maybe both. Anyway, it was an interesting choice for Def Leppard to cover, kind of an obscure original by the Kinks (at least here in the U.S.) and I really like it.

Cat Stevens – Tea for the Tillerman Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song, great thread, nice to read some thoughtful comments. Having just recently been introduced to the song through 'Extras', I have some thoughts for your consideration:
1) Tea for the Tillerman - caffeine for the boatman to stay alert, on course, and get to the destination safely. Steak for the Sun - meat for strength during the work performed (traditional manual labor during daylight) requires protein. Wine for the women who made the rain come - libations are not necessary, but for many make life more enjoyable or even tolerable; 'women' indicating love of significant other, and rain helping crops but hindering production and both necessary and unavoidable. Seagulls singing is nature's beauty, and children playing is blah, blah, blah...:-)
2) I think Ricky Gervais choice of this 1970 song for his 2005/6/7 series is subversive; Cat Stevens is a British subject of East Asian lineage, now known as Yusef Islam and who refuses to play or discuss his work as 'Cat Stevens'. I think Gervais is acknowledging a great song with a point-of-view, and thumbing a pretentious twat who has turned his back on the values of the country that nurtured him and provided him with the choices he now has.

Anyway, this song has been in my head for days, and I still don't mind it!:-)

Eric Clapton – Pretending Lyrics 16 years ago
I loved this song and have misunderstood the lyrics for more than 15 years. That's why I like this site. The message I get is that 'two go out working, three stay home' is that there is somebody else sleeping in his bed! His woman has been 'pretending' about how she feels. Just finished his autobio 'Clapton' and he has really had a tumultuous and confused relationship with sex and women starting from being raised by his grandmother and believing his mother was his sister until he was 11. That'll f you up good! Lots of illegitimate kids and absent parenting on his part, women come and go (3 Italian models, just to name a few). He cheats, it is part of the road life and he feels entitled to it. He pines for years for George Harrison's wife, finally gets and marries her, then realizes she is repulsed by him sexually after all the pain he put her through. His first live-in love was a 16 year-old, who became an addict and alcoholic along with him and spent 20 years holding in her despsing resentment.

The song is written by a Texas bluesman, Jerry Lynn Williams, if you love 'Pretending' you might want to Google him as he has lots of songs you will know and love recorded by others.

In my life, I am surrounded by posers; quite often, they get the attention of pretty girls and other rewards. But it seems like a lot of work to keep up the pretense, and ultimately they move on because at some point the 'mystery' is no longer intriguing to others. So they start it all over, with a new 'audience', so to speak. Anyway, great song, never get tired of it!

Rob Thomas – Little Wonders Lyrics 17 years ago
I have really enjoyed reading everyone's interpretations, Rob Thomas has created a beautiful song that we all see a message in. For me the 'small hours' are the early morning hours (as in "wee small hours of the morning" from an old standard) when I lie awake and think about my regrets, bad decisions, hurtful things I said and were said to me, and replay memories. I don't enjoy this, and want to put these thoughts out of my mind. And this song is letting me know that it is ok to move past these things, and "let it go" and "let my clarity define me" instead of the sorrow and regret I feel. Wonderful song, it is my favorite of the moment; a great example of the power of music.
