"Love is natural and real, but not for the likes of you and I"
I don't think there is much question as to the protagonists sexuality.
Morrissey you're my hero! |

I know Ian was married and everything, but it always seemed to be about being a closeted homesexual. I always heard "I've been waiting for a guy to come and take me by the hand, 'cause these sensations let me feel the pleasures of a normal man". anyway, if you think about it, it kind of makes sense. |

i live in the latter of the two (suburb), but it's really really really rich and white upper class. i don't get bored so much as feel loss of meaning because everyone around me (besides my few punk fan friends) lives in McMansions and spends all their time at abercrombie or the country club. i think the official percentage of non white inhabitants where i live is 2%. and it's a 50,000 total pop. |

i read the book "our band could be your life", which had a section on sonic youth. at the time ('85) they wanted to parody reaganistic americana, so they wrote this song about the charles manson murders. |

definetely not sarcastic. awesome bass line, especially for a punk song. i think it's about suburban opression and never living for anything bigger than your existence. |

even though i think this has to do with growing up too fast, i also think this song is about how adult's give teens no credit. i am so sick of 18+ concerts. the only all ages ones are for crappy pop bands. |

i don't think this song is about others in the punk scene being judgemental. i think it is just about all the jocks and popular kids who dismiss geeks and punks as "weird" because they are actually devoted to their music. |

| Hüsker Dü – Chartered Trips Lyrics

yeah, i agree with the idea of it being about a kid going off to war.
the line; "i looked at the pictures, imagine where the lay away, on a beach, by the sand, where their clothes all lay away," reminds me of those old army enlisting scams where they advertise seeing the world and traveling to great places.
the last line; "said" there's no returning from this chartered trip away," is more support for this theory.
i think a chartered trip means a chartered trip to death. like it's certain that if you see the outside world and join the army, that you will die, metaphorically that is. just an idea |

| Hüsker Dü – Something I Learned Today Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
such a great band, so few comments. zen arcade is a concept album about a kid running away from home and finding an identity.
i think this song is either about the main character witnessing a freind do drugs/self destruct, mainly because of the part; "something i learned today, never look straight in the sun's rays, letting all the sunshine in, can't remember where i've been."
Grant hart (the drummer) was a total heroin addict too, and i think bob mould wrote this song, so maybe it's about grant. |
