I guess that I could see someone who identifies with Christianity, or any religion in general, feeling victimized by thinking that this song is about them, but if you even watch the music video they made for this song you will realize that they are targeting most everyone in the world that is doing something wrong. A direct quote from the lead singer:
"[The music video is] not to shit on people who believe in God or any religion for that matter. Its about the evils and ignorance in things like religion. If someone believes in it because they feel like it works for them, then that is good. Not because a band does, or anything else. They do it for themselves. But just because they believe and you don't, doesn't mean you have to shit on it. Just respect that its different than what you believe."

To me, the song seems to be him lamenting about either a past love that they're no longer apart of, or maybe just any type of relationship (friendship or otherwise). His coping method with him and whoever no longer being as close as they once were is to just forget about it, "live like [he's] real" as in begin to be a regular person again, and then "turn out the lights and be alive" as in forgetting about it and never looking back. |

Wow you guys take songs so literally it gives me a headache. I'm almost positive Vincent Bennett has said that this song is his form of a "tour" song and how tiring being on the road is.

Hester Prynne is the main character of The Scarlet Letter. she committed adultery, so hence all of the lyrics pointing towards giving into temptation and commitments to others being destroyed by curiosity. the 'Scarlet Letter' in the book was a big 'A' on Hester Prynne's chest (A for Adultery, obviously) and also so everyone in the community could know how bad of a person she was, hence the lines "society kept track of your defiance / branded into your chest". to be honest i have no idea what domestic livestock has to do with this song though haha |

i cant believe nobody has mentioned suicide yet. obviously the title and lyrics are a play off of what is on tombstones and what people say, Rest In Peace (meaning they are dead). whenever i hear the song i think the same thing as everyone else that has commented, but also a touch of him constantly contemplating suicide to "make this go away and let him rest in pieces" |

Inutaisho... you are an idiot. its called a 'metaphor' if you didn't go thru 3rd grade english. This is a great song, and i do think it should have been left on De-Loused. Since i don't illegally download music, it was a major bitch to get my hands on A Missing Chromosome, but i got it.
And return2ouroots is partially right. If you do or have done acid, mushrooms, or any chemically altering drug, it gives you a different perspective on life (or it did for me) and made understanding every mars volta song like a 2nd language. |
