| The Style Council – You're The Best Thing Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Yes it is pompous to try and show the meaning of a song on a site called song meanings. Apparently according to your own interpretation it is less pompous to just state your opinion with no argumentation or proof than it is to try and show what a song means through the artist own words or the general fan interpretation. Maybe you don't know what words mean either because pompous was used incorrectly here. What you and your husband think supersedes all that, but I'm the one that is pompous, nah actually you're just a dumb shit and people like you who think this site is merely a place to praise songs, don't really understand the function of the site. You're pompous and by the looks of this post and your other ones a simpleton. | |
| Bad Religion – God's Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I actually didn't mention myself or my own pain. Thanks for proving that you cant comprehend a paragraph of basic text. Secondly, your explanation doesn't account for things such as natural disasters, diseases, famines and other things humanity isn't responsible for. Your criticism is pretty shallow and tired in most philosophical circles. Man is not responsible for all suffering so it falls flat when comments like this are put out. Also the further idea that these things are necessary for free will/heroism is just as absurd because it cant be explained why those are necessary for basic life, created by a supposed loving god. They also haven't been proven either which makes all of this a chain of unproven statements starting with the biggest, that being the existence of god. Might want to stop posting, lest you embarrass yourself and your religion further. | |
| Descendents – Rotting Out Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Song is about suppression and repression of feelings. | |
| Descendents – Pervert Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| A satirical song about how they think men should not view relationships with women. What is sad to me is this is actually better than their serious love songs which are usually just sad and desperate or at worst slightly stalkerish. | |
| Descendents – I Won't Let Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The song is a statement from a boyfriend to a girlfriend that they wont cheat while they're on tour/vacation ETC. | |
| Descendents – 'Merican Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The song is a condensed and dumbed down version of the book A Peoples History of the United States. | |
| Subhumans – Til the Pigs Come Round Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Disregard for the law. | |
| Subhumans – Nothing I Can Do Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The songs is a statement of disdain towards apathetic attitudes and it does this by showing several different ways this attitude manifests through examples throughout the song. | |
| Subhumans – No Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Older people thinking ideology in younger people is just a fad, when clearly the problems they're trying to address are real and fixable. A statement of heartfelt and passionate ideology. | |
| Subhumans – Work, Rest, Play, Die Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Wow, this song is much deeper than most of you seem to give it credit, I mean you have taken one or two lines that may or may not be about the punk lifestyle and made those the whole song... Anyway, the song is about describing the conflict a socially and politically aware person goes through when everything and everyone around them is working against them. Most of the song describes all the temptations someone has, to just assimilate and be done with it. The song basically states this in the first sentence: "when the people of the country have forgotten how to disagree and the national economy is said to be o.k. and the wages that you get will help you to forget will you keep your ideologies or throw them all away?" They further restate this with: "so what's your main priority? remain in the majority who never really cared?" The song also makes it clear that you shouldn't simply put yourself on a pedestal, although you should consider the fact that things are not the way you want them to be. With this information you should further do something about it, regardless of whether you belong to a tired ass musical subculture or not. The main idea is to stick to your guns, not to be tamed, that sort of thing. |

| Subhumans – Mickey Mouse Is Dead Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The song is about people taking life to seriously and not getting a good laugh at things that are certainly ridiculous like religion and government. Instead we make issues out of things that don't really need to be issues, Mickey mouse is simply a metaphor for this. The song also makes a reference early on to the situation of Lenny Bruce who was also subject matter for another Anarcho-punk band Crass. The implications this and other things in the song talk about make me think they were trying to make the point that people become martyrs for our entertainment or "Look what you done to Mickey Mouse." |
|
| Subhumans – Waste Of Breath Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The song is about the absence of purpose in life and the futility of mundane actions, they related this point in the best way they could to punk audiences by relating to things having to do with the lifestyle. The song also talks about people who want to make a difference but for some reason or another did not have the drive or they inspiration to move forward with their dreams. |
|
| The Damned – Suicide Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Someone on the brink of ending their life. | |
| The Damned – These Hands Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The song on the surface seems to be about a killer clown, however the clown could be a metaphor for someone faking a personality like most serial killers do. | |
| The Damned – Anti-Pope Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Obviously against the religious mind set specifically Christianity and even more specifically Catholicism. Its good to note that the song clearly explains its not against the followers, but the actual priests and hierarchy of religion or the people making money off other peoples suffering. | |

| The Style Council – The Stand Up Comic's Instructions Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The song is about a stereotypical racist/homophobic overly nationalist comedy act and how Paul thinks its cliche and low brow to even consider doing an act so played out on top of the fact of it being just wrong. | |
| The Style Council – Shout To The Top! Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is about the turmoil in England at the time. A big theme in Paul Weller's songs from this period is to talk about the labor movement and it being a front against Thatcherism. In the song the man is begging "god" to save the state of the economy as shown by lines like... "I was halfway home - I was half insane, And every shop window I looked in just looked the same" Means every shop is closed. "'Cause at this moment in time there is nothing certain in these day's of mine" Talking about the uncertainty of they economy. All the lines after that seem to be talking about someone who has lost their job and trying to give them inspiration and hope that things will get better if they make their voices heard. |
|
| The Style Council – Speak Like A Child Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is about describing someone he likes and then exclaiming in vain that he doesn't want them to change for any reason. Probably a younger idealistic love shown here than in most of Weller's songs. | |
| The Style Council – Walls Come Tumbling Down Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song is an anthem for social-anarchy. | |
| The Style Council – You're The Best Thing Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song isn't a love song, at least not in the traditional sense. It is a well known fact by most Weller Fans that this song is actually about England. Just look closely at the words theres no way this song is about a woman. "I could be discontent and chase the rainbows end I might win much more but lose all that is mine I could be a lot but I know I'm not I'm content just with the riches that you bring I might shoot to win and commit the sin Of wanting more than I've already got I could runaway but I'd rather stay In the warmth of your smile lighting up my day (the one that makes me say, heh)" All those lines refer to Paul's stance on British artists wanting to seek fame in America. Hes against it and is personally content with fame in his home country, as shown by the lines above. "I might be a king and steal my peoples things But I don't go for that power crazy way All that I could rule but I don't check for fools All that I need is to be left to live my way (say listen what I say)" These lines are probably the most telling since they obviously aren't connected in anyway to a theme of love. Paul was describing his preferred form of government at the time for England, which happened to be socialist-anarchism. The last lines in the song are merely a retouching on the other two themes. |

| Bad Religion – Man with a Mission Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The song is about a priest or some other type of christian holy man. I don't know for sure but I think the parts of the song: "Now somebody out there must be reading my mail" "Now somebody out there must be tapping my phone," Lead me to believe they might be referring to a specific real life priest who came under some trouble at the time the song was written, but this is admittedly speculation on my part |
|
| Bad Religion – All Fantastic Images Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The song is Bad Religions version of "the grass is always greener on the other side" saying. They do this by citing many different types of fantasies and ideals and how they went wrong. Not a very hard song to define. |
|
| Bad Religion – Fuck Armageddon...This Is Hell Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"how could hell be any worse? life alone is such a curse! fuck Armageddon, this is hell" Need any more be said about the meaning of this song? |
|
| Bad Religion – Do What You Want Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think the underlying message of this song is that someone can be well educated or at least generally on the level and still not contribute or not care to contribute anything to society. This is easy to see because the person they're describing is a generally uncaring yet somewhat socially aware individual as we can see in lines like. "Idleness and dissipation breed apathy." "Hey I don't know if the billions will survive, But I'll believe in God when 1 and 1 are 5." The thing most people seem to miss with Bad Religion songs is that most of them are actually satirical, in that they actual think they opposite of what the song is trying to say. Especially their more anthemic songs like this and "A Walk." |
|
| Devo – Gut Feeling/(Slap Your Mammy) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think this song is about stalking and then (sudden change to slap your mammy) raping a girl. Its just done in the very dry DEVO way in which things of high emotions are said in the simplest terms possible. | |
| Devo – It Takes a Worried Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about being more cautious in every day life, the (booji boy speaks) part which is not listed here is the most important part of the cover and a dead give away about what the song is about. | |
| Devo – Are You Experienced? (Jimi Hendrix cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
My favorite cover of theirs, easily. Their version of the song is to show that the spirit of the sixties has died and that with it things like peace, love and revolution has become a passing fad. But DEVO is affected by it still and attempts to affect others with the spirit. The spirit in the song is first represented by a peace symbol and then again by a concert in vein of an old Hendrix set. |
|
| Devo – Through Being Cool Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is another one where seeing the video is essential to getting the meaning. The Smart Patrol is DEVO's idea of a kids clique. They arm them and dress them and in the video they go around and eliminate the people that DEVO sees as ridiculous in contemporary society. Thats what the whole song is about. |
|
| Devo – Peek-a-Boo Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The problem with DEVO is that some of their songs are completely reliant on the video to infer any meaning from it. I think this song is a post-modern version of Plato's cave. The images that come on the screen are distractions from the lyrics themselves. I think the Billy Idol looking clown thing, was a representation of aimless fashion rebellion, that never goes anywhere and doesn't help the music only distracts from it. |
|
| Devo – Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think the smart patrol part is a red herring to fool people, the first three sung parts are just describing they average schlub and his disdain for modern living. But they all end with... "Guess I'm just a spudboy Looking for that real tomato" Which makes me think this song is supposed to be a really dry parody of a love song describing sex and the usual DEVO social commentary. "We shove the poles in the holes" = Dick in vagina. The Mr DNA part is describing sperm attacking eggs. |
|
| Bad Religion – God's Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is a pretty basic argument leveled against monotheistic religions. If you believe in a loving god why is there so much pain and suffering in the world? Why would a loving god let children starve and men war against one another? This song is just an extension of those arguments in musical form. "My pain is God’s love" |
|
| Bad Religion – Damned to Be Free Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about the pointlessness of careerism and modern day life, mixed in with death worshipping Christianity. We think were great little workers, but really were accomplishing nothing and its all just a distraction to hide us from the truth. That we are all basically living just to die. I would also like to add that "extract the nectar, burn the tree, I gotta be damned to be free" is hands down my favorite lyric line of any song ever. |
|
| Bad Religion – Pity the Dead Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Noimnot, is right this song is about religious people and the contradictions between their faith and basic human feelings. Why would you "Pity the dead" if they go to a paradise after this life or get reincarnated? Because, you doubt your own beliefs without even realizing it. | |
| Bad Religion – You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this song is about getting into heaven and how its easy to get into unless you commit the sin that some of the members of BR and I have, and how ridiculous that should sound to anyone after the age of five. I also think its about, how Christians are nihilistically willing to fuck up this world to get into fantasy land, when their dead. |
|
| Bad Religion – Them and Us Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about groups and their need to make -up superficial differences to get us against each other. I think the group in question is the government making up reasons to fight someone when their is really no difference between us and said group. | |
| Bad Religion – Hear It Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is a big "fuck you" to all the groups and ideas that try to control our lives. | |
| Bad Religion – Voice of God Is Government Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about the evils of a crumbling separation between church and state. The beginning of the song is showing the average Joes compliance and approval of this crumbling. Sadly its more relevant now then it was then. |
|
| Bad Religion – Yesterday Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about embracing progress, but being careful about its side effects. | |
| Bad Religion – Into the Night Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about wanting to cling onto beliefs beyond all reason and common sense. Its about wanting to stay in a philosophical safe zone, where your beliefs aren't challenged and everyone lets knowledge regress into a state of ignorance. "as you crawl back to your womblike existence in the night." That lyric was the give away, to me. "but you hear those heavy footsteps" I think the footsteps in this song represent encroaching reason and the marginalizing of religion and its adherents. |
|
| Bad Religion – Beyond Electric Dreams Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is like PALE BLUE DOT, in song form. | |
| Bad Religion – A Walk Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is like waking up and flipping off a globe. | |
| Bad Religion – Ten in 2010 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about a Malthusian catastrophe the date and number mean little, the fact that its an inevitability at some point is whats relevant. I also find this to be one of their most anti-socialist songs. "Haves and have-nots together at last Brutally engaged in mortal combat" This line basically means, we will all finally be of the same economic class when we are all starving in the streets, a philosophical jab at socialists. The person who thinks China is a step in the right direction needs to do research. They are currently going through a self made crisis of having no women to birth any children, since everyone in the starting generations of there initial ban on more than one child families all wanted boys. If you want the human race to dwindle out of existence, yeah we might want to adopt their system. |
|
| Bad Religion – Come Join Us Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about any group that places faith above reason. | |
| Bad Religion – Frogger Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about the danger of inner city roads and freeways. The Frogger part is just a metaphor for that. | |
| Bad Religion – Bored and Extremely Dangerous Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think people over think this one... I think its just about how boring life is and about how someone might try and change it, but they see only futility in their actions. |
|
| Bad Religion – Eat Your Dog Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about the Indian religions (Hinduism/Buddhism) and the nihilism therein. Just take a look at the lyrics. This is about a piss poor Indian who has to live the dreary life demanded of them due to their religion and its caste's. Also in their religion's knowing ones place is one of its key aspects. It's called "Eat your dog," because of the literal implications of what these people have to do just to survive another day in their religiously stifled and approved of life. | |
