Loreena McKennitt – She Moved Through The Fair Lyrics 12 years ago
I couldn't help but see a reference to "Scarborough Fair". The Fair in combination with the lost true love. Even the rhythm and melody seem a bit familiar. I can't find the words to make it any clearer. Anyone else understanding what I mean?

The Bandits – Catch Me Lyrics 13 years ago
This is a cover (original Song http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858630677/ Saint Etienne - Hobart Paving ).

It was covered by the movie-band "Bandits", about 4 female German prisoners who form a band and try to escape Germany together. They replaced the name "Hobart Paving" with "Hold on, princess". This way, the song gets a whole new meaning.

Instead of about marode infrastructure, the lyrics now sound like a woman who's protected life ("princess") is shattered and who now leaves it all behind and tries to start all over again. The lyrics by that totally match with the scenery of fleeing band members because they combine somewhat glamour and fame to the motive of travelling, leaving and last but not least, being persecuted ("catch me"). The phrase "catch me" shows that this is not the helpless damsel in distress as the word "princess" seems to evoke (in fact, the narrator is just referring to herself, taunting herself when feeling weak to regain strength). More likely, "catch me" is a demand to her persecuters, even provoking them to try harder to get her.

Alicia Keys – Girl On Fire Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is about female powers. When you look at the video, you can see a woman cleaning the household, caring for kids, cooking food, etc. without a man coming along to help. Most probably she is a single mother. So the song is about emancipation, about being able to do everything, even alone.

Any woman who has a single mother or has raised kid herself will know what I'm talking about. There is always so much to do, you feel like it's consuming yourself, like fire. And then, in the evening, when the kids are asleep, there are those quiet, lonely minutes, where you are totally broken up and just want to cry, feeling burned out. But your not, you will get up the other day and do it all over again, because the flame has not vanished in your eyes. A strong girl, strong woman, who will make it, even on her own. Love that song.

Therion – Son of the Staves of Time Lyrics 13 years ago
I may be wrong but I don't think he's singing "...until heaven's gate". This would not make sense. It's a song about runes, nothing to do with Christianity.

I think he's singing "...until Hel's gate" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hel_(being) ). Unfortunately in the video you don't see his lips to this so you can't tell from reading them.

Does anyone have references to further information on "Birger Tidesson" as Gareth Beaumain posted?

Disillusion – Back To Times Of Splendor Lyrics 13 years ago
Well, when listening to the album, I am actually at several times reminded of the opera "La Wally" by Alfredo Catalani, with a male protagonist instead of Wally.

There are some parts of it, like a kind of sheltered, bucolic, happy life that is someday suddenly interrupted by a harsh event, then there is sadness and anger as well. The leaving of a loved one and sadness, the betrayal and the decision to kill someone. Phrases like "Longing far away, away from here" remind me of "ne andrò, ne andrò sola e lontana!"

In the novel that the opera was based upon ("Die Geierwally"), the protagonist also starts a fire to take revenge for being abused and to flee in the confusion caused by it.

It doesn't fit exactly, but there are certain parallels I think.

For those who are interested, here's a summary of the novel:

The novel is about a girl nicknamed Wally, who lives with a harsh father who is the richest farmer in a small village. The girl is as beautiful as she is stubborn and brave. One day at a feast, she falls in love with a boy from the neighbored village (who doesn't notice that), who's father has been at enmity with her father for years. Her father starts an argument with the boy and leaves the feast, taking her with him. She cries and in his rage he promises her to another guy named Gellner whom she thinks is disgusting and terrifying. He forces her to go shepherding up upon the "high alp", that lies between rock and ice and is isolated from the rest of the world. She spends the summer there, but when she returns, she finds her father lying sick and Gellner running the farm. He has chased away the farmgirl that had been like a mother to her and he is brutally abusing the senile farm servant. She looses her selfcontrol and strikes him down with the blunt side of an axe.

In the following tumult, they try to put her in the dungeon, but she puts the haystack to flames and flees in the confusion. After a long journey she returns home and finds Joseph seeming happy with another girl. She shames them at a religious feast and swears that she will only give her love to the one who will get a kiss from her by force.

Then he some day he suprisingly invites her to a feast. When she arrives, dressed up like a bride on her wedding day, he tells her he will only dance with her, if she kisses him first. They start to fight then, and she, though better than him, lets him win. He kisses her, then walks away to the other girl, so Wally looks like a complete fool. In despair, she promises to herself to marry the one who kills Joseph. Unfortunately, Gellner has heard that. He shoots Joseph. Wally, who heard the shots runs to him. She finds Joseph wounded but still alive and saves him.

She wants to die but doesn't want to kill herself because her priest forbid. One day, when she is nearly starved to death, her beloved Joseph finds her. He tells her that the other girl was his bastard sister, a secret he had to keep save from his mother. He was really sorry for the cruel jape and had went to Wally that night to excuse for that when he had been wounded by Gellner. The two of them forgive each other and together spend the rest of their lives. They die early, because "the storms that had shaken them had loosened the roots of their lives".

All Saints – Black Coffee Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about a dying love. A couple that - probably after a long time of relationship - slowly drifts apart. Everything has become routine and on the outside they are just a happily-ever-after couple. The song reflects that with that cozy, slow, sugar-sweet melody. But on the inside, it's all just a facade, I think she may even be actually sick of him doing the same boring things every day.

The rap-like parts are telling romantic moments but everyone of it has a touch of being "wrong".

romantic: Night Swimming
romantic: Beach walking
wrong: Always silent
wrong: Never talking
romantic: Then you call my name
romantic: And I know inside I love you

Romantic:
Sail away
I miss you more
Until you see the shore
There I will be waiting

Wrong:
Anticipating

More subtle in the second verse:

Day dreaming
Chain smoking
Always laughin
Always jokin
I remain the same
Did I tell you that I love you

<--- “Anticipating”, Always, always, "I remain the same" are the keywords to look for. Routine, routine, I don’t think she likes it. She is already “Anticipating”, meaning he is so boring, she can even predict what he is going to do next.
"Did I tell you that I love you" <--- She lets him think himself safe, trying desparetely not to show him her doubts. Women often do that to overplay their feelings I guess, because they are too scared to actually face the situation and break up. She maybe also doesn't want to hurt his feelings. She knows, she has everything she has ever wanted, but still it doesn't feel right. She doesn't want to end the relationship though, trying to smooth-talk the daily routine and trying really hard to appreciate it.

Brush your teeth
And pour a cup of black coffee out

WRONG - Why would he brush his teeth first and then drink the coffee afterwards to have them dirty again? It doesn't make sense. It even tastes horrible; mint-toothpaste-taste with coffee. And just imagine the picture of freshly cleaned, white teeth, black coffee running over it, making them all look somehow... wrong. It's a very strong metaphor, a central paradox, standing for everything in this relationship going wrong. I think she is actually disgusted by the black coffee over freshly cleaned teeth.

I love to watch you do that every day
The little things that you do

It's a lie, she actually hates it. But as I said, she is trying to talk that smooth. It's a phrase, maybe from a companion she read to save her relationship, nothing more.

The chorus is also noticeable:

Each moment is new <-- It’s a lie
Freeze the moment <- - It’s a phrase
Each moment is cool <- - It’s a lie
Freeze the moment <- - phrase again

I wouldnt wanna be
Anywhere else but... here <- - Ever seen “Lie to me”? The pause before “here” indicates she actually is lying. She wants to say something else, this is why she stops. Wonderfully shown by the rhythm of the song. A totally greasy melody with an unexpected pause. Masterwork.

I wouldnt wanna change
Anything at all <- - Phrase and lie!
(Anything oh I..) <- - Notice it?

I wouldnt wanna take
Everything out on... you
Though I know I do
(Although I know I do)
Everytime I fall

Now that’s interesting. It indicates that the perfect couple isn’t so perfect, just as expected. She is taking everything out on him. The lyrics say nothing about him defending himself. He seems to be passive, helpless, victim to her attacks. But she is attacking, because she can’t do different. Suppressed feelings will always find their way out. And at least maybe she is hoping for him to react, to actually feel something is wrong, to change his behavior, to break the routine or at least break up the relationship (though she maybe does not want this consciously).

It’s not very woman-like to end a technically good “functioning”, but actually unemotional relationship, it’s in our genes I guess. When he’s not doing wrong, we won’t leave, though we maybe don’t love him.
I may be prejudiced, I went through this once and leaving that guy finally was one of the best things I did in life. But hadn’t it been for my friends and family, I wouldn’t have done it, too afraid to make things worse.
I still think I would construe the lyrics the same way if it hadn’t been like that. The videoclip stresses my theory. It’s about a sad couple, she is always running him ragged. Half of the video she is throughing things at him. One scene he is only sitting in the bath tub when she is freaking out. He doesn’t do anything to her, just hitting the water, the mirror, but not really defending himself. One scene she is even packing her bags, then he reacts, trying to detain her by holding the bag. This is exactly how my ex-boyfriend reacted. I had packed the bag before though so it was closed; I just took it and went away. She didn’t, just sitting down in the edge crying. This is when the verse with the romantic scenes is repeated, but it sounds lower, background music getting louder, sounding quite aggressive then and finally fading.

Wonderfull song. I hope I could help you to understand it. I'm open to other opinions though.

Dredg – Ode to the Sun Lyrics 15 years ago
I also think it's about a car crash.

The beginning riffs sound like warm sunrays on a summer morning.

There are no clouds on the sky "but I will move those clouds away" - The sky looks clear, fresh and innocent like nothing happened, plunging the scene in a bizzarre, kind of carefree background.

"you've already glistened through the window" - Maybe the driver was dazzled by the sun.
Just within seconds "it's gone from light to grey" - The very bright sunlight, the next thing he may have seen is the grey asphalt of the road.

"we flipped towards the sun": Another hint, that the driver was dazzled as the sun was apparently shining directly from the front. The "we" hints there are more people involved than the driver.

"wheels skidding on the road": self-explaining.

"a flowing sea of red / the whole city groans": Blood of course, and "the city" meaning the local people noticing the accident being shocked.

"my heart-I owe you-my soul": His girlfriend / close person. Maybe she/he was killed in the accident while the driver survived and now he feels guilty for the death. "I owe you my soul" - It should have been him to die or at least he is so guilty he offers even his soul to save her/him.
So maybe the song is even about suicide after having caused an accident in which a rider died.
Alternative it may be a last prayer to take his life but to spare the rider's.
Or maybe at least, if both die, take his soul to hell and the rider's to heaven ("let the demons have their way / if so it's angels you create"). Every of this theories is also supported by the lines:

"Please accept this offer, this is all for you, transcend" not sure, if the "you" means the soul of the rider or the sun (symbolic for a sort of god). I tend to believe the last one, because of the song title and the following:

rubberneck
passing motorists
a mangled tuna-can-car rests : Good keywords to put the scenery in a nutshell. Nice metaphor with the mangled tuna-can-car.

Important quote:
repair this tattered skin
hold it in your hand
you've already glistened through the window
you've already set us all
free

The sunbeam through the window has "set them all free", which means killed them obviously (which may somehow eliminate the suicide theory, but not by any manner of means). He craves to "repair this tattered skin / hold it in your hand", so to save the dead rider, either bring her/him back to life or at least to heaven to keep it save.

From this background, it's easier to find a way to interprete the first verse:

but I will move those clouds away
letting the sun shine through
in this ode to you
[...]
and disguised within the dark
light will wait

He wants to sacrifice himself in any way to save the rider and his craving is put into this song. This is why the voice gets so begging and longing and why I love this song so much. You can feel the heartblood in it when listening to it.

Disguised withing the dark light will wait... While there will be only darkness for him, it will comfort him to know that at least the rider is save, which is his personal lightbeam, even in total darkness around him, hidden (disguised) from others. Darkness in which form it ever means, maybe suicide, maybe hell, maybe death, I am still not sure.

Hope this is comprehensible, I do not speak English mother tongue.

Pain of Salvation – Disco Queen Lyrics 16 years ago
I wonder if the following is intended, but one of my first associations was:

vintage 33 - 1933: Hitler's takeover in Germany, beginning of 3rd Reich

switch to 45 - 1945: End of 3rd Reich

Inbetween: Invasion? xD

Maybe because he doesn't care about her at all he's so dominant and she falls for him because she's kind of submissive.

Kamelot – Ghost Opera Lyrics 18 years ago
In an Interview, Thomas Youngblood (Kamelot's guitarist who wrote this song) said that it is about an opera singer who prepares for her first entrance. Alas, on the way to the opera house, she gets ambushed and raped. Over that, she loses her mind, also because she couldn't fulfil her dream because of this traumatic event.
