Back To Times Of Splendor Lyrics
Half way through the wheat, my golden foe
With his itching ears in the scorching heat.
The weight of summer, torment to my hands
Armed with a sickle I am out for his beguiling glance.
Thought I heared a mare neighing from the creek
Where in every hour spared we anxiously would meet.
Drunken whispers noone could hear
'til the day when hordes of wasps
Poisoned every hour so passed.
She was faint as I when she spoke to me.
Reluctantly. Words came through
Words of leaving here and leaving me.
And her eyes grew bigger then
Bound in moonlit glittering.
She Leaned to me and whispered tears into my ear.
Well, I went to see the creek again
And many a day I'd stand at its shoreline wondering
If it might be heading north
Through the timber, passed the lake and our chalet
should have gone with her, should have gone with me.
But I stayed when she begged me
to come with her, never to separate, never to be alone.
And lept silent when I should have sung the song of heart
And remained loyal to the thief.
There is a road that I must travel
May it be paved or unseen
May I be hindered by a thousand stones
Still onward I'd crawl down on my knees
At sudden swallows took upon the scene
Heralding what I could not have foreseen
a threat of rain on the dark horizon
A strong foreboding of a storm arising.
And willows'd roar, midges dazzled
birches sigh from painful lessons
lessons they'd learned in life
that every stem breaks if bent too far.
Will I run for a shelter and quiver ?
Will I run away, be idle and shiver ?
And thunders pound so hard, pound the drums of warfare
Hungry clouds draw closer with reptile teeth as lightning
Is it the fear of the inevitable that is keeping me awaiting?
I am rigid as of reverence, still and enduring.
I must have seen it coming.
Oh my longing's neverending. Time's so pale
So come with colors, paint it burning red
I fear no more, can see clearly now
The morning sun beyond the clouds.
And when the dark night seems endless
With only a quarter moon left of light
I am longing back to times of splendor
Longing far away, away from here and back to you.
I swagger back and forth dancing the betrayer's dance
For the last of all times, I swear
For the last damn time, I swear !
I am over and through with all your lectures
I know this is the right step to do
Over and through with all you lectures
I know this is the right thing to do !
if I don't leave now I will be lost in the hot burning dungeon
they have oh so thoroughly prepared for me to all eternity.
Hear her whispering feel my cheek ablaze
And I take the first step of a thousand more to come.
There is a road that I must travel
May it be paved or unseen

Is it just me or does this whole album just remind you of some sort of narrative from the middle ages for some reason? Stuff like that entire first passage really give off that vibe for me.
This really is the greatest metal album ever recorded.
Well, when listening to the album, I am actually at several times reminded of the opera "La Wally" by Alfredo Catalani, with a male protagonist instead of Wally.

There are some parts of it, like a kind of sheltered, bucolic, happy life that is someday suddenly interrupted by a harsh event, then there is sadness and anger as well. The leaving of a loved one and sadness, the betrayal and the decision to kill someone. Phrases like "Longing far away, away from here" remind me of "ne andrò, ne andrò sola e lontana!"

In the novel that the opera was based upon ("Die Geierwally"), the protagonist also starts a fire to take revenge for being abused and to flee in the confusion caused by it.
It doesn't fit exactly, but there are certain parallels I think.
For those who are interested, here's a summary of the novel:
The novel is about a girl nicknamed Wally, who lives with a harsh father who is the richest farmer in a small village. The girl is as beautiful as she is stubborn and brave. One day at a feast, she falls in love with a boy from the neighbored village (who doesn't notice that), who's father has been at enmity with her father for years. Her father starts an argument with the boy and leaves the feast, taking her with him. She cries and in his rage he promises her to another guy named Gellner whom she thinks is disgusting and terrifying. He forces her to go shepherding up upon the "high alp", that lies between rock and ice and is isolated from the rest of the world. She spends the summer there, but when she returns, she finds her father lying sick and Gellner running the farm. He has chased away the farmgirl that had been like a mother to her and he is brutally abusing the senile farm servant. She looses her selfcontrol and strikes him down with the blunt side of an axe.
In the following tumult, they try to put her in the dungeon, but she puts the haystack to flames and flees in the confusion. After a long journey she returns home and finds Joseph seeming happy with another girl. She shames them at a religious feast and swears that she will only give her love to the one who will get a kiss from her by force.
Then he some day he suprisingly invites her to a feast. When she arrives, dressed up like a bride on her wedding day, he tells her he will only dance with her, if she kisses him first. They start to fight then, and she, though better than him, lets him win. He kisses her, then walks away to the other girl, so Wally looks like a complete fool. In despair, she promises to herself to marry the one who kills Joseph. Unfortunately, Gellner has heard that. He shoots Joseph. Wally, who heard the shots runs to him. She finds Joseph wounded but still alive and saves him.
She wants to die but doesn't want to kill herself because her priest forbid. One day, when she is nearly starved to death, her beloved Joseph finds her. He tells her that the other girl was his bastard sister, a secret he had to keep save from his mother. He was really sorry for the cruel jape and had went to Wally that night to excuse for that when he had been wounded by Gellner. The two of them forgive each other and together spend the rest of their lives. They die early, because "the storms that had shaken them had loosened the roots of their lives".
The whole album tells a story actually.

brilliant
This is probably the most awesome metal song in existence.
I could never figure out what the hell Vurtox was trying to say. There's something I like about this band, though but can't quite put my finger on it.
