| Sharon Van Etten – Magic Chords Lyrics

This song really came to life for me when I saw it performed live. Now it is a favorite for me off of this great album. I haven't attempted to break down the progression, but I'd guess that the title references a I, V, VI, IV structure to the song itself.
Interesting piece on magic chords here - http://www.easyeartraining.com/2011/01/26/four-chords-and-the-truth/ |

| Spoon – I Could See The Dude Lyrics

I always thought this was in the mirrored pay to view stalls with a stripper. He could see the dude in the next room/stall. I have to think that maybe the snot isn't supposed to refer to "tears" though.
That lyric is also taken/revised from the Love song "Live and Let Live". This is definitely one of the best songs Spoon has ever recorded. I know it is one of Brit's favorites. I think Drake Tungsten digs it too. |

| Frank Black – Parry The Wind High, Low Lyrics

It seems to be just what it sounds like. An experience at a UFO convention. Arecibo is the huge radio sattelite observation center seen at the beginning of the film adaptation of Carl Sagans book Contact. Eyeglasses with bright lights for mood therapy. Star Trek fans. He had so much UFO stuff in his lyrics. Frank Black tells a story that when he was a newborn, his family experienced a UFO sighting. |

| Frank Black – Hang On to Your Ego (The Beach Boys cover) Lyrics

This is a cover version of the alternate outtake version of "I Know There's An Answer" from the classic Beach Boys album Pet Sounds.
Black and the Pixies always seemed to choose interesting/obscure cover songs (See: Theme from Narc, In Heaven, Wild Honey Pie) |

| Frank Black – Don't Ya Rile 'Em Lyrics

I always thought this song was an argument for the benefits of stargazing. Black belongs "back in time" when the stars were gazed upon for directions and people were still captivated with the sky and outer space. He refers to electrical light turning one day and one night into two days and no night and that the lack of the day/night cycle is slowly making us go crazy. Really cool song. Anyone else have a different take on it? |

| Frank Black – Pure Denizen of the Citizens Band Lyrics

Frank Black used to like to drive himself around on tour in his Cadillac. This song seems like it is about trying to talk to the truckers on the citizens band (CB) radio and being shut out because he's not a trucker. He tries to justify by saying he "talks plain talk", drives as much as they do and isn't stuck up "don't eat no Chateaubriand". It's a funny song. |

| Frank Black – Czar Lyrics
|
This is a song about John Denver and some weird facts that Frank Black seemed to amass/retain about him over the years.
1st verse - can someone fill in the blanks?
2nd verse - During the oil shortage crisis in the 1970's, long lines would form when gas stations would refill their often empty tanks. Because he had the means to avoid this crisis, John Denver had his own gas tanks installed at his home.
Chorus - not sure if the Czar reference means anything more than Denver being extremely successful and powerful at the peak of his popularity.
Verse 3 - John Denver was an avid pilot (you know) and space enthusiast. He reportedly was rejected by NASA upon requesting a trip into space on one of their missions. He then nearly succeeded in flying up with the Soviet Space Agency (long before any non-Astronauts were doing so) after offering them ten million dollars for the opportunity. |

| Frank Black – Places Named After Numbers Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
I have long loved this song. Frank Black used to write a lot of lyrics that were riddles. This is a love song about black holes. Black Holes aren't technically given names to my knowledge but the signature energy emitted that leads to their inference or discovery often has long numerical name references that are most closely associated as the "name" of the black holes themselves. Black holes are thought to be the result of collapsed stars and cannot be seen with the naked eye.
The lyrics make reference to these facts surrounding black holes.
P.S. I wish Frank Black still wrote lyrics in such an interesting way. It was always a joy to get his latest record and start decrypting what he wrote about. |
