The last verse is actually from an unreleased and lost song called "Goldaline". It's just this part of "Oh Comely" that is about the siamese twins. And Goldaline is one of the twin sisters (and in the last verse the other sister is talking to Goldaline). The last verse is some death-birth-rebirth sort of thing, because by letting their skin "blend", they will in death be one again, just like at birth. but the last part seems very fictional and metaphorical, is is taken out of context, since Mangum wrote an entire song about the twins at first. There's also one more part of "Oh Comely", called "Oh Sister" (unreleased). In the live show @ Aquarius records Jeff says that Oh Sister is connected with Oh Comely. And Goldaline is mentioned in that song too. The part of the song before that is obviously about Anne Frank once again, and how he wishes to go back in time and save her. The first and second verses are difficult to interpret, but I think it's basically about a bad childhood. anyways, I think the meaning of this song as a whole is impossible to find, because there is none. Since the song is divided into 5 different parts (oh comely, the part with the father, anne frank's death, goldaline, and oh sister) and we know that goldaline and oh sister is two seperate songs of which Mangum chose to include a part of one of them in Oh Comely - there is no obvious main theme of the song, the parts are supposed to be interpreted separately. and btw, the "holy shit" that the guy screams in the end is my favorite part of the song ^^ appearantly Jeff was just supposed to feel out the equipment and/or sound devices in the record "studio" but instead of playing one or two verses, he played the whole thing and everyone around was shocked that he did, and the way he did it. hence the "holy shit" (: they just added some horn parts and then the recording of this song was done. |

IndieRunner --> okay, first of all - the album isn't based on Anne Frank. Her life (her diary) was an inspiration for Mangum when he wrote some of the songs, but to say that aeroplane... is based on her is just ridiculous. Anne's presence is hinted on a couple of tracks, probably most obvious on "Holland 1945", but not mentioned or hinted on i.e. King of Carrot Flowers pts 1, 2&3 and Communist Daughter. And although the title, first and last verse in Holland 1945 is about her, the second verse is about something/someone completely different. The way I see it this song is not about Anne (although she has an important role), it's rather about life and death, about reincarnation (of Anne) and a boy who didn't want to be reincarnated and committed suicide (2nd verse) - all very close to the theme of life&death. and the "chorus" is from the listener's point of view. and btw, google is a search engine where you might find links to other sites discussing the song, but it's not a better or worse source than the opinions from the people posting comments here, since Mangum has never told anyone what he meant when he wrote the lyrics. I also saw that somebody wrote that wikipedia confirms that the spanish boy is Arriola.....? If you checked the wiki page of Arriola you clearly see that that statement is followed by a link to the source - and guess what? -> http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=36470 next time, get your facts right. Also, Neutral Milk Hotel doesn't sound like The Decemberists. It's the other way around. Same thing with Arcade Fire. |

enligt mig kents bästa låt (gillar mest deras tidiga verk). texten är nog djupare än man tror, och någon får gärna fortsätta spinna vidare på mina tankar här men så här ser jag det (rätt uppenbart i och för sig): det första som bör sägas här är väl att det _aldrig_ blåser på månen, pga av att det inte finns ngn atmosfär. så fick ni en fysiklektion också (: texten beskriver en hycklare (personernas inre matchar ej det yttre), eller enkelt sagt en "wannabe". både killen i vers 1 och tjejen i vers 2 utger sig för att vara några de inte är. hans kostym och hennes slampiga klänning blir som skal mot omvärlden, för de vore ju fan om någon såg deras rätta jag. hans kostym som skaver är väl på sätt och vis hans samvete som ger sig till känna, vilket han också erkänner i och med "kostymen är inte jag". men även det där om kvarsittningen pga av fusk på prov har inte med skola att göra, utan även där handlar det om att han synar sitt inre och upptäcker att han "fuskat med sina svar". "är jag en astronaut, är jag så ensam?" betyder att han känner sig lika ensam som en astronaut ute i rymden. tjejen i andra stycket ser jag som hans bevis på att han inte är ensam, utan han har hittat en kärlek han inte trodde fanns. eftersom det omöjliga nu har hänt så känns det ungefär som att det blåser på månen, för att lite elegant sådär länka in i rymdstoryn. men sen kommer det som jag inte fattar mkt av. "nu när vi fyllt alla hålen [...] är jag en astronaut" där får någon gärna hjälpa mig att fylla i hålen (hähä). men kom fan inte och säg att fylla i hål är en matafor för att knulla (trots att jag ser kopplingen med att kostymen ska av, samt att "idag är igår" för både killen och tjejen för att anspela på ett fylleligg) nej, den här låten förtjänar en bättre betydelse än så. och förresten, jävlar vilket långt inlägg. den här låten förtjänar det dock (: |

great song. regarding the meaning of the lyrics I'm confused whether the family members are dead or not. "I had a sister..." "I had a mother..." "I had a father..." these lines are impying that they're deceased. in that case the song meaning ought to be that you should appreciate your family and take better care of your family members before it's too late. however, some lines gives me the impression that they're still alive but that they don't wanna see him because of something he's done wrong in the past, which he now regrets. "There's no love" "and she won't even look in my face" "I'm still waiting for the day to come when you will arrive" these lines are all implying that the relationship is all screwed up because of him. he want to be a part of the family again, but he's afraid to take the first step. any ideas? |

the line "you´re just a animal developed into" says that you're not as different from the monkeys as you might want to think. i think the song means that everyone has to have fun from time to time and not just be the shy, prudish person always doing one's duties and so on... i also think that the "we" and "you" parts is about the same person/persons. the we-part is a confession, while the you-part is a request to start living before it's too late. btw, awesome song. johnossi's best. |

"Well you don´t build a city in a day but in twenty years you should have something" means that he feels that if she just gave him a chance their relationship might grow with the time. on tuesday he says that he will search for her on friday, perhaps implying that they met at a night club. he wants a "needle and thread for broken hearts" - he needs an apology since she broke his heart, and he wants to "fix" her heart by trying to change her loose life style. and the "glory days" is his idea of them being together sometime in the future. |

"Mannen i den vita hatten, 16 år senare" is translated to "The man in the white hat, 16 years later" which refers to the white hat the swedish graduates wear. The song is probably about this guy who bumps into a girl he remembers from his high school days. They talk about what happened (a bit fuzzy, but probably some romance) and how they were unsecure and afraid at the time, and that they (he) can't recognize himself in his past self. The first half of the song is about the past adn the other half is about looking forward. In the lyrics he tells us about all these big problems, both now and when growing up, but he doesn't deal with any of them. That's up to you, the listener. |

hehe, njaaaa.... Den handlar väl mer om kvinnomisshandel, sjunget ur mannens perspektiv. "jag ska aldrig göra dig illa igen" - misshandeln har pågått under en lång tid. han vill inte göra henne illa men det sker ändå. han säger att han inte tänker skada henne igen, men det ligger liksom i hans natur. "du ryggar tillbaks då min hand just ska röra vid din" - hon är så rädd för honom att bara han försöker röra henne så skyddar hon sig som en reflex. refrängen är en slags hyllning till mannen och hur han står över kvinnan ("det är så det ska vara...som en perfekt och underbar lag"). i andra versen ger hon äntligen igen för allt, och stryper mannen (mannen är alltså "jag") "ryggen mot väggen till sist, äntligen slut" - han känner att det är en befrielse att det här händer. för han _vill_ ju inte göra henne illa egentligen. därför känner han att det är rätt åt honom och att hans död förhoppningsvis gör att hon kan få ett bättre liv. för trots allt så vill han hennes bästa. The reason why Kent did two (one?) english album is because they'd become so big in sweden that they had to try to release something for the listeners outside the nordic countries. But I agree that this (and all the others) song get lost somewhere in the translation. And actually, when you understand the lyrics and hear Jocke Berg singing them, they get some much better. Try listening to the swedish version too! Goes for all the english songs. Back to this song... The lyrics don't tell us much, but I believe it's about politicians in general "black and white inside" means that they give all this empty promises, and "reward me now" (sung very powerfully) is their cry for acceptance and to be acknowledged. ps. sorry for the bad english... ds. |

vet inte om nån kollar på kents låtar här, men det kanske komemr en våg framåt nästa skiva, så jag skriver väl av mig lite tankar om 747. låten handlar om en flygkrasch (rätt uppenbart kanske). i första stycket åker de till flygplatsen i en taxi ("när taxametern slagits på..." i andra stycket är de i planet som håller på att starta. "En rökfri viskning" betyder helt enkelt att de sitter i planet, som ju är rökfritt. "Det luftkonditionerade ljudet av fart" är ljudet från startmotorerna. "när paniken bryter ut..." - planet störtar. "men mot gummi glas och metall betyder ett mirakel inget alls" är en starkt laddad mening. Gummi glas och metall är förstås beståndsdelar i ett flygplan, vilket gör att meningen i princip säger att de är medvetna om att planet är på väg att krasha och att de sannolikt kommer att dö (tänk er in i situationen!) "viskar till mig: du är värd att dö för" - den här meningen (+ lite till) ger låten extra djup. Det är nu även en kärlekshistoria och inte bara en flygkrasch. Hon/han säger ungefär att "hellre dö och ha känt dig än leva utan att ha känt dig". Blir lite 'carpe diem'budskap över det hela också, så ta vara på tiden på jorden och var lite snällare mot varandra, det är vad jag tror jocke berg försöker säga med den här låten. och till VinterAvtryck: Titeln "747" är en hänvisning till boeing 747 (och inget jävla a1 b2 c3 tjafs!!!) Att låten är 07:47 lång är heller ingen jävla slump, utan det är en kul grej, så dom drog ut på det hela med några gitarrsolon m.m. så att den skulle bli 7:47. Radioversionen är tex bara 4,nånting. |

why would the spanish boy be Arriola? All that theory does is ruining the meaning of this song. There's no connection whatsoever. Just think about the word _now_ ...... I partly agree with the people who've been talking about reincarnation. But not literally speaking. The lyrics are saying that there are kids like Anne Frank everywhere in the world today. This little boy in Spain who's "playing pianos filled with flames" is in my opinion just a metaphor for being calm in a stressful and terrifying situation. The flames could either be some sort of chaos, or in fact a war (not in spain, think metaphorical again :) The "empty rings around the sun" part is about time passing (one ring = one year, u know) and the dream he speaks of has come true because Anne Frank has sort of "resurrected" or reincarnated in many of us, there's hope for mankind blahablaah...... dunno how many who's still discussing this song, but what do u think? (I skipped the rest of the song since I think this part is the most interesting) |
