The Silver Jews – Smith & Jones Forever Lyrics 2 years ago
@[couldBanyone:47708] thank you. for some reason I pictured them inside the hatchback, but it makes way more sense that they’re on the outside looking in.

Nevermind, I found out it has something to do with a camera. Only took me 9 and a half months to figure it out.

The Silver Jews – Time Will Break the World Lyrics 16 years ago
I think you're right that the best part of the song is the poetry, but I would suggest that it's not about drugs, it's about Berman's loathing of rich people, which I'm pretty sure he's mentioned in some interviews. Also, I think in the song maybe the singer kills the owner of the mansion. The first verse he's inside the home noting what he sees, the butler hesitates when he notices the intruder, and the action sequence is represented through the exploding tanning beds (could be literal or symbolic within the story). In the second verse the singer leaves the mansion and returns to his horse. With the kill fresh in his mind we get the metaphors of the house weeping and the horses legs looking like shotguns.

Panda Bear – Comfy in Nautica Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with therealmcdeezy somewhat, but I think the song itself is more of a satire. Like it's supposed to be a guide on how to be cool. And I think Nautica is a part of it, because all the popular preps and jocks wore Nautica around the time panda bear was probably in high school. Hipster indie rockers won't understand, but if you went to highschool in the suburbs pre-emo/hipster generation, anyone who was cool wore Nautica.

Pavement – Grave Architecture Lyrics 18 years ago
The breakdowns are downright scary. Sounds like the band is falling apart as they play, until everything comes together at the end for one of my favorite moments in music.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Here Comes Alice Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Alice is consumerism here. Or more specifically, the "Pepsi Coke" that satisfies for no other real reason than that's what it's advertised to do.

Oasis – Cigarettes & Alcohol Lyrics 18 years ago
Oasis definitely made this song their own, even if the main riff borrows from T-Rex. I mean, does "Get it On" have that beautiful transition from F# major to A? NO. "Get it on" is a straight E-to-A-and-back blues re-hash, where-as Oasis make it pop-rock bliss even only with that one chord movement. Great lyrics too!

The Silver Jews – New Orleans Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is eerie as hell. It's that sound of a band struggling to communicate a beautiful song. I get the same feeling during parts of Wowee Zowee. I think what I'm talking about is best exemplified right when "trapped inside the song" hits and that thin lead guitar just jumps in, kind of ruining it, but kind of making it totally frighteningly beautiful.

Pavement – Ann Don't Cry Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Malkmus is referring to the fact that some might see him as cold hearted, or a pig when it comes to women. Anne is a girl who is sad ("don't you cry") because of this, but Malkmus retorts "Don't believe in what they say about me." The first verse would be sung from Anne's perspective. The second is where he explains himself, "My art is not a wide open thing" meaning it's not for everyone and people are going to get him confused.

Pavement – Speak, See, Remember Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is definitely about capitalism and corporate/consumer culture, but I don't think it's anti-anything. Just a commentary on what the US is founded on. Very non-preachy though, like David Byrne.
