I have always thought Bono is referring to himself and the confusion of living in the spotlight and playing rock star. At that point in the evolution of U2, they were mocking themselves frequently. They had always denied that Rock Star monicker and the glam stage shows and all of that. Up until about the time of Achtung Baby and the character MacPhisto (sp?) their concerts had been about the music only, then they became elaborate. The Fly, the other character Bono played in the Zoo TV tour was exactly type of image that this song is describing. I think he was spoofing himself. Saw the PopMart tour (another example of tongue in cheek - rock 'n' roll is overinflated glamour) at Soldier Field in Chicago and when they played this song, it really cooked. |

I agree with Hatz. The song is about Reagan, who his wife Nancy called "Daddy." The song refers to Daddy a couple of times. I love Bruce Hornsby, who wrote this with Henley and I love the way the song was executed, but I wonder en light of the way Reagan won the cold war by turning plowshares into swords and bankrupting the USSR, if Henley and Hornsby recognize that chastising the man for it, makes them look stupid. |

Nice thoughts Donutbandit. I've heard a number of interpretations for this song and that one makes sense. Certainly Steely Dan was not cut from the usual rock'n'roll cloth. They were alternative before the term was used in music. Their chord progressions and the intricacy of their music is unmatched in the rock world.
One theory I've heard for this song is that he is taking a fictional man and referring to the man's daughter. The chorus fits this very well and the lines about the college work with this theory. Just throwing it out there. The one thing you can be certain of with SD is that there are always going to be some deeper meanings when the lyrics seem shallow. They never did anything shallow. |

I didn't wade through all of the posts on this, but I recall that when the song came out and STP hit it big, it was said that the song was written shortly after they saw the movie Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me. The references to dead girls, dogs smelling them and the masks all make too much sense if you've seen the movie. I think it's just a bunch of images they threw together, after being inspired by the movie. If you haven't seen it, it's good, bizarre, but good. |

I'm probably wrong, but on first blush, it seems to me that he is talking about a movie starlet who has Alzheimers, at least in the first verse and the chorus. The second verse throws me for a loop, but it seems that a starlet who is ill and reclusive works for the majority of the song. Rita Hayworth retired from acting because of early onset Alzheimers and I have a feeling that he is referring to her. |
