Oops, I just read my last post, and it should read "guitar picks" not "guitar". The phrase was on his picks. |

This song is inspired by the book "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. Tripp Eisen was a huge fan of Rand's work and her philosophy.
In the book, the hero, John Galt, argues that "A is A" meaning that reality is real and there is no use in ignoring it. But in a "dead world" of corruption, A is non-A because people ignore reality.
The character also argues that the "looters," who steal the products of the minds of others, like to have their cake and eat it too. All of this behavior leads to the dead world that Wayne sings about.
The song is about not ignoring the truth, and not ignoring the bounds of reality.
Tripp Eisen paid tribute to this novel by having the phrase "who is john galt" painted on his guitar. |

In case anyone doesn't know, the lyrics are a reference to the phrase coined by Timothy Leary, "turn on, tune in, drop out". |

My favorite Mould song! I don't really know what it means, but it seems rather self-explanatory. I think it's just about making wishes, and how pointless it is, because they don't usually come true. There's a price for everything you gain, and you have to be careful what you wish for. |

It's about a person who was too caught up in the present to notice the bad thing that was coming ("pays no mind to the distant thunder..."). He only cared about the "quick reward," and was too busy living in the moment, and he ended up being let down. |

This is an amazing song! One of my favorite REM songs now. I recently discovered it, after owning the album for many years. I used to just skip past it, because it was right after Losing My Religion. It's really powerful in the third verse.
I think the song is talking about how he always discounted love, and thought, "what's the use?" It sounds like the song is pretty cynical. Then at the end, he has a revalation of sorts, where he says "I like your hands, all full of glory" |

This is my favorite song from Shadow Zone (which is an awesome album in my opinion). Does anyone know what he screams in the chorus right after the line "screaming, scratching, pounding"? He says it multiple times throughout the chorus. This has been bothering me ever since I've heard this song. |
