Can't believe I didn't comment on this song years ago.. One of my all-time favorite songs.. Such passion.. You can't deny feeling the power of this song being an NIN-fan or not.. Even when I was with who I thought was the most amazing woman ever.. thought I had found love for the rest of my life... I found this song powerful.. Now that relationship is over(lasted 2 children and 11.5 years) and it this song obviously means even more... But it doesn't at the same time.. It is a primal feeling.. the inevitability of something so perfect not going the distance.. |

Super great song.. Easy to think it is about a woman(or any sexual partner for that matter..) but I think it is a bit more general than that.. Anything that you are addicted to for whatever reason.. Drugs, alcohol, sex, music, TV, whatever.. name you number one vice and the rest pales in comparison.. |

I've heard that people think this is about a woman contemplating an abortion.. I can see where someone would think that, but I really don't agree.. I think it is about wanting to stand up to the government/authority.. Especially coming from someone who is in the military.. Being told to kill when you don't agree with the politics. |

I respect everyone's opinion on songs that aren't specifically said to have a meaning by the artist.. even then music is personal.. But I have to say that this song is about finally realizing there is life after a relationship that one thought would last forever(and it didn't). I smile as my original favorite M |

Trent Reznor is the Beethoven, Bach, etc of our generation. Kanye's pretty damn good, but a different skill set. |

There are a lot of good ideas about what this song means. It is also a song very easy to relate to. So I will stick with what I know and say that, for me anyway, it could be about trying to escape drug abuse. |

I see that as well. The video adds a lot with him fidgeting around in bed and such. Probably a broader meaning to the song(someone mentioned sin in general), but you can easily make the drug abuse connection(speaking from experience). |

I'm not sure if they meant it to be about drugs, but being someone who struggles with addiction there is a lot to the song(and video) that can relate to this. I came to look at what people were saying specifically to see if anyone else got the addiction angle out of this. |

I absolutely love this song. I no longer consider myself a Christian, but was heavy into 5Fe when I was. I still love their music and meanings in a broad sense.
One of the best things about this song is how nihilistic it is for being by a Christian band. It reminds me of one of the goofy things about Christianity. If eternal happiness awaits in Heaven, why would we waste time here with so much temptation and suffering? |

I love that most Nails songs can have so many meanings depending on who is listening and the place they are in life.
The obvious theme here is a woman/relationship, but I agree with a few others here that think it can be applied to anything that someone loves that hurts them. Drugs ring a bell here. A few lines in the song are very close to normal drug references and/or their effects on a person.
I put up a comment on Genesis - Tonight, Tonight, Tonight with the same sort of vague interpretation of being addicted to SOMETHING. The songs are closely related and were blatantly pointed out to me by the Kleptones mashup containing both songs :) |

I will have to agree with the addiction interpretations. It was what I immediately thought of listening to the song(actually Kleptones mix with NIN-With Teeth). Certainly easy to say drug addiction, but as with most songs about addiction, it covers any addiction in a broader sense. It could easily be applied to being addicted to women as well. You know, the kind you pay for. |

I think it is about the frustration of being molded into someone regardless of what you want. And your wants mean nothing because it is part of the process. (i just work here). So your angst is probably just a product of how you were raised. Either way, you are who you are, and the world probably sucks... but that is just how I see it =P |

I used to think it said "Can't stop" as well. Until reading the lyrics in the liner notes :)
They really need to fix that.
Apart from that, my new favorite NiN song. And it is hard to say I ever had a favorite, but this is just an incredible song. |

Uhh.. Gypsies have been persecuted for about... ever? So I don't really think that would be what used to not be a crime. Although before major civilizations formed nothing was a crime, so I suppose if you go that far back, then it could be about anything :)
Drugs are definitely a theme(Reggae singing for godssake :)), but I think it pretty much implies that societies are getting more and more cookie-cutter and restricting or at least frowning on many natural things. |

Great song. Great album..
To me, it is certainly someone(although I think the references to 'Sally' are everyone in general) selling out/buying in. Empires and trends fade... Why not just be true to yourself? |

Another great track from The Fragile. Always gets me riled up(however when it gets to the first comedown from the buildup is my favorite part). This song demonstrates how brilliant Trent is as a musician and lyricist. |

One of my alltime favorite NiN songs, and probably the best on Broken. I love that there is so much room for interpretation in all NiN songs. I tend to take a more vague/general meaning from most of his songs. This song applies to far more than traditional relationships. |

Easily one of my favorite songs of all time. I don't think a day went by during the 2004 election that I didn't listen to this multiple times. I also love the fact that the song came to fruition as a jam session. They didn't really have any set music they were going to use and kinda just winged it. |
