Funkadelic – Sexy Ways Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm surprised no one has commented yet on this song. I think the lyrics are pretty straightforward. What is unique about this song is that it is simultaneously "sexy" while also being "romantic" at the same time.

Sex:
"I want to help you use
What you got"

Love:
"I need you in so many ways"

Usually these items are mutually exclusive as they appear in songs, often glorifying sex for un-romantic reasons. Thus, this song is about sex as it occurs in romantic relationships.

Wolfmother – Woman Lyrics 19 years ago
Why do people insist on comparing Wolfmother to a select few bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple? First of all, I don't particularly see the resemblance (yes, they have a very 70's sound to them, but saying they ripped of the only 70's bands that people regularly listen to I cannot comprehend). Thankfully, lectrofiedalligator also noticed "the resemblance of cris ross and ken hensley of uriah heep organs skills" and vieires noticed that Jimmy Page "flogged a few (or more) of his riffs after all" (and by a few, try tons and tons of Howlin' Wolf tunes). Also, minihats has been wise enough to draw the comparison to "Thin Lizzy's Chinatown."

What do I mean by all of this? Well, I'm simply trying to defend Wolfmother from the oft heard criticism that they sound like 70's band rip-offs. Yes, they have wide influences ranging mostly from 70's music. However, they didn't rip-off a single band, but crafted their own brand of 70's rock from diverse influences. And anyways, they're surely not the only ones. Bands like Monster Magnet (especially their earlier material) has a very 60's/70's psychedelic jam sound, even covering songs from bands like Grand Funk Railroad and Hawkwind, yet people don't make these same plaigarism accusations against them.

Suicide – Ghost Rider Lyrics 19 years ago
This song epitomizes American teen angst with a retro-vibe to it. I remember reading a review of this album with the reviewer slamming Suicide for making un-warranted political assertions. Lyrics like "America's killin' its youth" isn't political, nor was it meant to be. I doubt it was meant to be a critique of America so much as it was empathy for the trapped feeling of growing up in a culture where the only way out appears to be rebellion as epitomized by being a biker or part of a biker gang. Compare with The Jesus & Mary Chain's "The Living End," another great song.

David Bowie – What in the World Lyrics 19 years ago
What I love about this song (actually, this whole "berlin trilogy" of albums) is the magic of Bowie combined with some of the best featured artists ever. Not only does this song feature Eno on what is credited as "report arp. rimmer e.m.i" (I have no idea what this means, but the Eno influence is obvious), but my favorite male vocalist of all time, Iggy Pop is featured too.

Pavement – Zurich Is Stained Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is incredibly ambiguous and I'm not sure exactly of the relevance of Zurich to this song, but I do know that not only is Zurich in Switzerland (it is the economic & banking capital in the northeast), but it is in the heart of the "German part" of Switzerland. German is spoken there and the local culture is very German.

I think this song is about abdicating responsibility even when one is responsible and slowly coming to grip with personal responsibility. The chorus suggests "it's not my fault," however the last stanza refers to "mistakes" with reference to a "we" (this would incriminate the speaker of this song).
