| Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Johnny Cash was a guy who thought he knew what the right thing to do was, through his commitment to Biblical teachings, and yet, like so many Christians, continually chose to do the oppposite. This song just encapsulates the life of anyone with addictions, be they drugs, as was Reznor's (and Cash's) case, after he wrote the song, or drinking or anything else. Their friends go away in the end, and even those who get close are told "I will make you hurt". |

Johnny Cash didn't write this song. He may have perfected it, but Trent Reznor wrote it, as quoted above, BEFORE he became a drug addict. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurt_(Nine_Inch_Nails_song) |

I got an interesting answer from the website toriphoria, which is Tori Amos who did an amazing cover of this song. Her thoughts were that this is a song about how death sneaks up on us, and regardless of what was happening in life, that it is time to stop with the unimportant and love. |

| Sigue Sigue Sputnik – Love Missile F1-11 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| To me this was always about ignoring the world's woes, whether that was a comment on other people ignoring them or the writer ignoring them, I am still not sure. Either way there is a comparison of the missles that fire into the sky with his (or their) 'red love missile' that shoots. | |

Thank you Lanta. Reading the comments from the beginning was doing my head in. AIDS wasn't even thought of when this song was written. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSehtaY6k1U |

This song is lyrical genius. It's comical, yet still true to the biblical story. |

| The Killers – Human Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
My two cents worth. I see it as him engaging in the age old debate over Fate and Destiny versus Chance and Choices. Like a lot of Killers songs it has a lot of religious overtones. The platform of surrender is the place where one gives their life to God, like an altar, or stage in some churches. However, in this it also doubles for the stage one sees a puppet play out on. My sign is vital (it could be I'm human, my heart is beating) my hands are cold (I might just be the lifeless puppet on a string) On my knees (in prayer) asking God, do I have choices, or am I just being led around? My favorite verse is this one: Pay my respects to grace and virtue Send my condolences to good Hear my regards to soul and romance They always did the best they could To me this is saying all these honorable, good things, that invariably are characteristics of God, are fading away in society today. As society walks away from God, we see it as freedom, when what we are losing with all this freedom we have is all those good qualities that are regarded as Godly. |

| Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Harsh the Herald Angels Sing Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I thought it was about an unexpected pregnancy, but not from the perspective of a couple, but rather a single female who 1) suffers morning sickness, 2) has to give up smoking and drinking 'for the baby', 3) doesn't quite know who the father is, Alan, William or James, 4) worries about what the neighbours will think shen they see her obviously pregnant and not wearing a wedding ring, and 5) hasn't thought of a name if the baby is a boy, but will call it Clare if it's a girl. As far as casiotone writing songs from the perspective of a woman, there's plenty of others of his songs as well. |

It wouldn't make a great ad for condoms, but contraception and the reluctance to fall pregnant is obviously what it's about. Actually, I would like to see someone try and make a condom ad out of it. |

| Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – It Wasn't the Same Somehow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
At work we have an expression "mentally resigned" for someone who is looking for another job, and has mentally left us, but they just don't have another job yet. This is the same, only in a relationship. The relationship is dying, nearly dead, but they're still doing the same things they've always done. Been there, done that myself. This is my favorite Casiotone song. It captures those feelings perfectly. |

| Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – I Love Creedence Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
My take is also that Creedence is a girl. Ashworth has written a few songs from the perspective of a female, New Years Kiss, Scattered Pearls to name two. I'd be interested to hear Jenny Herbinson sing this one, I would think it's only that Owen's voice is, as described above, somewhat gruff, that makes the subject more likely to be a guy. For me, proposals summed it up, it's about two female friends growing up, and growing apart. As for the love they shared, it's obvious to me the love is platonic. I've lost friends to outside relationships and there is a gap in your life when those mates are not around. Just Owen Ashworth sums it up better that I ever though of it: It feels like a divorce. It was never a real marriage, but the feeling of missing a friend being around is somewhat similar. |

| Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – New Year's Kiss Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I get the impression it's about a girl who's slept with a boy. 1. Girls call them boys, I think gay guys call them guys. 2. Sis' don't care what brothers do on NYE, but they might ask about their own sis, especially if they're younger. 3. Young guys don't drink champagne. Girls drink. 4. The intention is a kiss, which obviously ended up going considerably further, Guys don't want a kiss, they want a Home Run. Girls want a kiss, for the romance. So that's why I think the story is about a girl. |

| Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Scattered Pearls Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I'm with wahwah, from the lyrics, (they looked for two entire songs - what's that 6-7 minutes?) to the way she says "they are only pearls" and the obvious over indulgence on drink; it just sounds like she's not all that interested in the lost pearls. Which smacks of the story of older men hitting on Becky perhaps being an embellishment too. Which to me makes it a brilliant song about the difference in values between generations. Mother obviously greatly values the pearls, the kids, not so much |

I love this song as much today as when it came out. It's about silent movie star Louise Brooks. And her biggest movie was Pandora's Box. |

| Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Interesting how all the people who heard someone else tell them say it's about self gratification, and the ones who actually heard the writer of the song describe it say it was about a curious Japanese culture. Maybe he meant the girls were all dancing with themselves, so the boys had to go home alone... |

| Newsboys – Breakfast Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Probably the one song I could do Karaoke without the words. We all agree what it's meaning is. Probably one of the cleverest song ever, the way it ties in the breakfast themes, into the all together serious tone of someone dying, and not wanting other to spend an eternity in hell. Eternity being the wrong thing to be wrong about, it's such a serious subject treated so humorously. |

| The The – This Is the Day Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This is my favorite song of all time. In fact, I registered on the site so I could comment on it. I too picture this is about a seemingly successful man, pining for the days of his youth, and the things money can't buy. Which I always interpreted as love. And not neccessarily as in sexual love, but simply the love of family and friends. And yet, he begins the day with the positive affirmation that This is the Day. He's going to do something about making the change in his life to get those relationships back. And if anyone can name another song featuring the piano accordian, I will be very impressed. |

| R.E.M. – The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
A friend of mine had me convinced the chorus was "Commie Italian Baker, huh." What was I thinking? However, I digress, Since finding the lyrics, I have come to understand it as meaning what a lot of people have written above. That he's waiting for her to call him. But the phone (sidewinder) sleeps tonight = she hasn't. |

| The Psychedelic Furs – Love My Way Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
On a similar track to Miss Darkk I had heard the song was about a gay relationship, although it was the male writer's attempt to show his female partner that he understood her interest in other females. So bascially, his wife had an affair with another woman, and he wrote the song to say "I get it, I know why you did it". |

| The Psychedelic Furs – Pretty in Pink Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
How can this be about a transvestite? It just seems to be obviously about a girl who is "easy". And those who sleep with her make fun of her, by talking about how easy she was. And perhaps even dressing up in her clothes to make fun of her. Caroline is just a tragic figure. But it's a great song. |
