or because 5/4 is an actual time signature. the drums don't have to start on a downbeat (i.e. kick) at the start of each bar. it gives it a cool rhythm that throws one off at first, but after 2 bars of 5, the drums come back around, when they're playing on quarter notes. for example,

okay, i don't know if anyone else has ever noticed this, but the intro to this song is almost EXACTLY like the opening song in Battletanx for N64. both in 5/4, very similar notes, exact same rhythm. give it a listen. i think karl sanders played some battletanx back in the day. |

no doubt they're talented as hell, but i still don't think they've matured that much. it's a lot of the same harmonizing in thirds and constant sweep picking (goddamn paul waggoner), then lots of chromatics and switching up time signatures by an eighth note or two for the heavy parts. sweep picking is impressive but generally lacks soul or emotion -- necrophagist, anyone?
that being said, i'll take BTBAM over anything on MTV, any day, ever. they're just a little overrated, is all. |

It seems to be from the viewpoint of a guy who had his heart broken by some girl, and despite all the pain the thought of her hurting later on as much as he is now brings him comfort. At least that's how I see it, since I can relate heavily. |
