Can't help it. First heard this in college, loved it then, nostalgic for it now, still think "I'm just a notch in your bedpost, but you're just a line in a song" may be the greatest dis since Shakespeare invented the "yo mamma" joke (Seriously, look it up. Titus Andronicus, Act 4, Scene II. It is glorious).

Twenty One Pilots – Stressed Out Lyrics 9 years ago
That bit about catching a whiff of a certain smell sending you back to when you were young . . . Gods, I always thought for some reason that I was the only one who did that. It's always there and then gone again, so quickly that I can never even identify what it is, or where it's coming from, and I don't think it's even really a smell so much as a memory of a smell, because I've found that sometimes I can catch a whiff of it when I play certain music ( Genesis, for some reason, brings it up frequently, as does Rush on occasion, and certain Springsteen songs, and sometimes Paul Simon ), but I tell ya, if someone could find that smell and turn it into a scented candle? I'd probably go broke.

Y'know, it's funny, I'm not a big fan of this band, but this one song? Just that one little line took it from being just an OK little ditty that I wouldn't seek out, but wouldn't necessarily change the stereo if it came on, and turned it into one of my favourite newer songs on the radio.

Insane Clown Posse – The Tower Lyrics 11 years ago
It's a horrible incident, but the worst part is that the sniper, Charles Whitman, who's sniper attack was the subject of this song, cried out for help for years, because he knew something was wrong in his brain, but doctors just assured him that there was no problem.

Turns out, though, he had a tumor in his brain that may have affected his ability to control his emotions, affected his sleep, and even may have triggered some of his darker thoughts and impulses, that no doctor was even willing to begin to look for, instead writing him off as a hypochondriac.

This tumor was first found during his autopsy ( which he, himself, requested in his suicide note ), but the fact that it was pressing into his amygdalae and thus may have been responsible for his actions, was initially suppressed in an effort to save the reputation of the doctor that had told him for years that he was just imagining his problems, and only turned up when investigated by a private commission on orders from the Governor of Texas, who was basically just wanting to be thorough.

It's scary to think that a physical abnormality so completely outside of any man's ability to control might control any man so completely.

Gerry Rafferty – Baker Street Lyrics 14 years ago
"mournful," is the word I've always used. more longing, really. that feeling, at the end of a long journey, the homesickness that hits the hardest on the long drive home, when home is in sight, but you're still a solid half-minute from walking up to the door.

that moment where the longing is there, because even though you can see the end of your journey plain as day, it's still just far enough away to not be real for you yet. that's the best way I have to describe the feeling that saxophone stirs in my heart: when everything you've longed for is within your grasp, and you know it, but you just can't believe it quite yet.

Rob Zombie – What? Lyrics 15 years ago
I've . . . kinda given up on finding the meaning in anything out of Rob Zombie. not that I don't think it's there, mind, more that I think he is a true artist, and the meanings are multi-layered and deeply buried. the good thing about that is that many people can hear it, and come away with different meanings, and get part of the picture, or you can just rock out to it and not worry about the meanings.

the bad part is when asked to comment on the meaning, as a Libra, I'm inclined to give a long-winded explanation that's basically a paragraph and a half of me saying "I really don't know enough to comment accurately."

Die Antwoord – Enter the Ninja Lyrics 15 years ago
this band is satire. it's plain in the vids, there's an over-arcing theme going on, telling a story.

the tattoos should give a subtle clue to the fact that they ain't serious. they play like fools, but how many people are gonna know enough to place the tattoo on Ninja with the knife being held over his heart? the character being portrayed isn't likely to be able to draw that kinda parallel?

specifically, in the character for Ninja, the first part (Nin) is a kanji composed of the upper part meaning "edge of the sword" and the lower part meaning "heart." add to that the lyric in this song "Been cut so deep, feel no pain," seems to be drawing a parallel to this very concept that, while not originally part of the mythos, has worked it's way into it since it's translation into English.

that's only part of my reasoning, mind.

Nickelback – Leader of Men Lyrics 17 years ago
I saw them in concert headlining X-Fest back in aught-one. chad came out stoned, drunk, and/or otherwise totally blitzed, then did about a dozen bad country music covers while falling down repeatedly , then this song, then ended on a David Allen Coe cover, then passed out on stage.

he prefaced this song w/ a lil speach, too. it went something like:

"This next song . . . this next song is about SHROOOMS!!!!! ::: appears to gag ::: Yeah, SHROOOOMS!!! Ya like that, don't ya? SHROOOOOOOMMMMMSSSSSS!!!! ::: falldown+vomit ::: Where am I, again?"

kinda ruined Nickelback for me. I was hoping to hear some of their newer stuff. instead I got Chad Sings Karaoke While Gargling Battery Acid (which actually might have been an improvement). it was like going to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show, only to discover that the Time Warp number has been cut and replaced with William Shatner's spoken word version performed while Ron Jeremy churns butter.

or like casting Nicolas Cage as the lead in Jesus Christ, Superstar.

or learning that the Scientologists were right.

X-Fest sucked that year. nothing like the year before with SR-71, the Union Underground, and a dozen other good bands, all capped off with Disturbed headlining. that was sick. this was just sickening.

Candlebox – Far Behind Lyrics 19 years ago
don't know what its about. don't honestly care. all i know is that recently it's haunted me. playing everywhere. random myspace and gaia profiles. radio in my car. alarm clock. and even a pop-up ad. and every time i hear it, it reminds me of the girl i want to be with more than anything. the girl who i care about more'n anyone. and, whats worse, the girl i let slip through my fingers. thats a lie. she didn't slip away, i pushed her. i was in a bad situation. i felt i had to keep her from getting involved. i actually broke up with her. she took it hard. i caused her more pain than i prevented. she wasn't there when the badness peaked, but even had she been, it wouldn't have affected her. now here i am, venting to a computer what no one else would give a fuzzy-purple-rats-nethers about. lost in the memories, and the what ifs, and the impossible fantasies of another shot. and this song playing constantly, peeling open a wound from 3 months ago. never allowed to forget. to me, this song is that. its hard to hear past "maybe," the rest just becomes white noise. "i did not mean to treat you oh so bad." i wouldn't even answer the phone to let her yell at me. never gave an explination. still haven't, fully. she even tried to get me to reconsider. was convinced she'd done something wrong. didn't want me to leave.

"but i did it anyway"

Oasis – Wonderwall Lyrics 19 years ago
In my life, this song strikes a chord. what does it mean? im not sure what was intended. only what it means to me. here goes:

about me, there are two oddities that come together to form a major problem (this story is important to my translation). the first is that people tend to either view me as creepifying and weird and avoid me all together. the second, most prominant amongst females, is they feel that i'm trustworthy and thus they come to me with their problems.

the second point is that in a partner, i kinda idolise the kind of woman who may not nessisarily need the "hero," but wants a guy who can be the knight-in-shining, anyway. thus, i kinda find meself wanting to be that guy to one gal, even though i don't say anything to her. I end up being the friend who she trusts, who advises her on how to deal w/ issues (including relationship ones [which i DO do my level-best to help {im not an opportunist}]) and who secretly has many things that they would like to say to her, but doesn't know how. whats the worst is when i see her with guys that make them miserable.

i feel (in my opinion) that the fellow in the song is all too familiar with said situation. He's helped this woman through so much shit in her life. he's sacrificed for her, always been there for her, never let her down, yet never revealed how he really felt. he's hoped in vain that maybe, just maybe, she'll realise all he's done for her. maybe she'll look back, and remember how he helped her. remember when he talked her down from ODing, or when he dropped everything he was doing because she was lonely, sad and needed a shoulder to cry on. maybe she'll reall that night she called him at work crying, and he had to have someone cover for him as he comforted her on the phone for 2 hours in the walk-in refrigerator. or when he cancelled a date, his first in 6 months, because she had an emergency. but, in the end, she wound up engaged to a guy whose short-tempered, abusive, possessive, controlling and paranoid. she still confides in him pretty much all of her problems, and he still helps. she even begins AND ends every conversation with "don't tell him I said anything" even though she knows they never spoke to one another but once. but in short order, she'll be moving in w/ him. and odds are good he'll never see her again.

well, maybe I got a little specific at the end, but I think my point stands. just get rid of the overly specifics, and replace the fiancee bit with "she shows no interest in him."

Faith No More – Epic Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is great! the problem most people have with it isn't so much about lack of meaning, its a misunderstanding of the meaning. "what is 'it'" "it" is nothing, yet at the same time, "it" is everything. "it" is the impossible. "it" truely is all things to all people. "it" is that promotion you just can't seem to land. its the new car. its the powerball jackpot, dream vacation, perfect wedding. its the perfect mate, the source of ultimate enlightenment, and World Peace. everybody has that one thing above all others that they want but can't have. it pervades their dreams, is right in their face all night, but when they reach out, they just can't seem to grab hold of anything but the aether. its the one thing that makes life worth living. for some, its the one that got away. the realisation that even friendship is impossible in the long run. in a sense, this song is dedicated as a vicarious, carthitic release to everyone longing for something that lies just out of reach. the one mistake that cost them their one true hearts desire. being a day late and a dollar short, to where "it" was forever snatched from you. the one in the passenger seat that fateful night and is now lost. the one who OD'd the very night you resolved to tell them how you felt. the ill chosen confidant that caused everything to be taken from you. the things you've lost, or are prevented from ever having. that is why the song "Epic" truely is epic. it doesn't speak to just a few about their failings or troubles or barriers in their lives. it strikes a chord somewhere in all of us, for none of us truely has ever obtained "it" whatever their own personal "it" may be.

"It" is the final piece to the puzzle. "It" is what would make life perfet. "It" is Paradise.

Thank you.

Disturbed – Fear Lyrics 19 years ago
dudes, you have no idea how much it freaks people out to just get riiight in their face (especially if they dont know you and had been giving you wierd looks) an just start at " I dont understand why you dont like me, why dont you like me? am i so different from you? now does it scare you that im able to discern what to love and what to burn..." from there, i just generally turn on my heels and call back over a shoulder "dont judge what you dont understand." people are so shocked that they just stand there. and every so often, someone becomes enlightened to the fact that "different" doesnt nessisarily mean "evil"

Tim McGraw – When the Stars Go Blue Lyrics 19 years ago
well, to each his own, but it seems (at least to me) that this song is lyrically weak in its construction. plus the singer really doesnt seem suited to the song. all told, its pretty bad. . . yet i never turn the radio when i hear it. the translation sounds about right to me, tho i might argue that its just as likely (if not more so) that she only acknowledges him as a friend, that she has no romantic feelings toward her. it feels to me (no proof, lyrically or otherwise. just my own gut) that he has feelings for her, yet was always too afraid to say anything, and relegated himself to the best-friend role. now she's out-of-reach (married, in a relationship, joined a convent, etc.), and he's broken up about it, but still willing to do anything for her, despite the fact that they can never be. willing to do anything to make her happy, showing his love (i hate that word. never sounds right to me) for her w/o her knowing how he feels. but then, as i said, that interpetation is not based off of anything stated in the song, just a feeling that i get. and probably more than a little influenced by a situation i find myself in thats not entirely dissimmilar, so dont take me too seriously. its a horrible song that becomes phenominal thru deeper meaning.

Billy Idol – White Wedding Lyrics 19 years ago
from what i understand, pcbhunter, you are right about the sister-getting-married-thing. but he wasn't protesting the guy, he was protesting the wedding, and the concept of marriage. he's basically saying "i went off fer awhile ta make me music, and you do something stupid like getting married. this won't last long"

Billy Idol – Rebel Yell Lyrics 19 years ago
nitrovo, the Rebel Yell was a vocalization made primarily in the throat reigion. it falls somewhere between a scream and a howl, and was a sound made by Confederate soldiers in battle (primarily when attacking from ambush) to shock the Yankees during the American Civil War. the sound lended to the nickname "Grey devils." has nothin to do with how young this "little dancer" was. on another point: this sound would be impossible to make with ANYTHING in the mouth, be it food, beverage, certain elective dental prosthetics, and, of course, phalli. thus, it is unlikely the song references oral gratification. unless of course the room was pitch-black and the punchline involves a glass eye on the table. :)
