Craig Finn – Apollo Bay Lyrics 12 years ago
Thanks for this - I suspected it might be set in Australia when the only google search for 'VB' was Victoria Bitter.

Craig Finn – When No One's Watching Lyrics 12 years ago
You guys, this is the best Tom Petty song in forever.

Menomena – Sleeping Beauty Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the line is "Keep the smoke in with a towel" as in, plugging up the space between a door and the floor in order to hotbox a room.

The Hold Steady – Soft in the Center Lyrics 14 years ago
The first line "Well, the hospital's gonna let you go
But the scene is gonna stick around" should be "But the city's gonna stick around," which leads me to believe that whoever the narrator is talking to has had some medical/mental issues relating to whatever it is he's "going through," and while the character is no longer hospitalized, the "City" is going to stay involved with him, as in DMH or a social worker or something. My first guess is that the guy in the song is/was seriously depressed, maybe even suicidal - which goes along with the whole thin ice metaphor later on.

Cake – Ruby Sees All Lyrics 14 years ago
This is an interesting idea, especially considering how Cake covered "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" a few years ago.

The Hold Steady – For Boston Lyrics 14 years ago
It just kills me that he refers to Boston Common as the Commons, it's not like he hasn't got an eye for detail, you know?

The Mountain Goats – Are You Cleaning Off the Stone? Lyrics 14 years ago
I've always interpreted as being sung from the perspective of someone who has passed away, and who is addressing someone they knew in life who is cleaning off their headstone.

The Mountain Goats – Proverbs 6:27 Lyrics 14 years ago
i believe the screen begins to "Glow," not "go," and it's the Delta Force ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090927/ ), not the delta four.

The Mountain Goats – Romans 10:9 Lyrics 14 years ago
Thanks, that line was killing me - I knew what I had wasn't right, but I couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be.

The Mountain Goats – 1 John 4:16 Lyrics 14 years ago
A couple of suggested edits, since the first half of the lyrics here has a number of discrepancies with the album version.

"In the holding tank I built for myself it's feeding time
And I start to feel afraid 'cause I'm the last one left in line
The endless string of summer storms that led me to today
Began one afternoon with you long ago and far away"

And, later on:

"in the cell that holds my body back the door swings wide
and i feel like someone's lost child as the guards lead me outside
and if the clouds are gathering it's just to point the way
to an afternoon I spent with you when it rained all day"

I know right? Heretic Pride as an album really kicks down some doors and makes its presence known.

The Mountain Goats – Sept. 15, 1983 Lyrics 16 years ago
This seems like a pretty straightforward song about Michael James Williams a.k.a. Prince Far I, a reggae artist who was murdered in Sept 15, 1983. The song definitely has a reggae feel to it regardless of its subject matter.

The Mountain Goats – Lovecraft in Brooklyn Lyrics 16 years ago
also (i hate to be so nitpicky but it's the mountain goats so you know) there is an additional line after"Head outside most everyday to try to keep the wolves away," it's "Imagine nice things I might say." "mason jars" is plural in the song, and "and then the girl behind the counter, she asks me how i feel today, i feel like lovecraft in brooklyn."

The Mountain Goats – Lovecraft in Brooklyn Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the line is
"hubcaps on the cars like funhouse mirrors
stick to the shadows when i can
Lovecraft in Brooklyn"

John Vanderslice – You Were My Fiji Lyrics 17 years ago
Being on tour is likened to being on a whaling ship, and one tours in a van. I love how his voice sounds in this song, especially the second stanza. and the expanding hours line just kills me.

John Vanderslice – White Plains Lyrics 17 years ago
There's an Abilene in Kansas too, but in terms of the song it's not important. Is this the best JV song ever? Probably.

John Vanderslice – Me And My 424 Lyrics 17 years ago
Marcel Duchamp painted "Nude Decending a Staircase" which totally freaked people out/made them mad when they saw it because it was extremely modern and looked nothing like what people were used to. In terms of references, it's really not that exciting unless you love modernism or enjoy coming off as kind of pretentious in duplicate on songmeanings.com comment sections. But what do I know?

The Long Winters – Hindsight Lyrics 18 years ago
This is my favorite song on "Putting the Days to Bed," even though something about it makes me so sad. I honestly nearly fell down the first time I heard the stanza about bailing water. It's just so beautiful.
