| I don't know about that above answer... that's a little out there... but I've always liked how Amanda's music can be interpreted differently for every single listener... I think the general idea of the explosion of technology and the loss of real communication is the theme of the song... I mean, I say that I am still really close to some people, and by "really close" I mean we are myspace friends who occasionally leave each other comments... relationships aren't quite what they used to be... and now it's like we are always available... we have cells, pagers (that's kinda dead now but still), email, etc, so by "can you find yourself without me" I see that as "we never spend time alone, we are always connected to everyone through the advances in communications... but with those advances we no longer have the physical relationship anymore. | |

I am so glad there are other people that agree with me... Rihanna's voice is just awful. You can't hear it as much on songs like Pon De Replay where she is covered (thank god) by a strong beat, but I saw her on like, Tyra I think, and she sounded terrible. This song seems to announce her lack of vocal talent. My sister and I both found the song annoying, but when it's on the radio once an hour, you learn the words anyway. We tend to plug our noses and belt it so that we sound like her. As far as the subject matter and the meaning of the words, I think it's a mediocre culmination of what could have been really powerful. Women in this situation DO exist everywhere. I myself went through it about two months ago, but I didn't cheat on my boyfriend. I broke up with him because I knew that I couldn't just ignore the feelings I had towards the other guy. It DOES feel like you are murdering the person who loves you, but hey, break ups are hard. It doesn't give you an excuse to cheat, but many women find themselves in that situation regardless of whether or not they know it's wrong and unfair. The problem I have with this song is that the lyrics are very dull. The rhymes are simple- "air" and "hair", and the "and we know it very well" line... boring. I think with a better artist doing the vocals, it could have been a classic, but Rihanna just doesn't do it for me. |
