This is such a fucking beautiful song. I'm in love with it - the strings that sweep in as Thom sings the line, "Panic is coming on strong" kills me every time.. I think the lyrics describe a scenario that literally occurred, with Thom dealing with social anxiety and sensations of alienation whilst he was in a public space; upsetting his inner balance in the moment, and recalling other similar times when he felt the same type of vibe - he then encapsulated this sentiment in a song. And it's a haunting sentiment, one that I can intensely relate to... that feeling of just wanting to escape.. to walk away from it all.. that seductive voice telling you to go.. I often think I should listen to it more than I do (especially these days) ... |

Am I the only one who thinks Byrne sounds like Bowie in the "How many people do you think I am?" part of the song?! lol (LMAO - I just read the above previous above comment - FoRevEr_SPooNer's - in relation to what I just said) |

Oh, just thought I'd add - the lyrics at the end seem to be: "You don't owe them anything You don't owe me anything You don't owe them anything ELSE" listen to the last word Billy sings at the end of the song - clearly ends with an "s" (plus it makes sense within the context of the rest of the song) |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Here's to the Atom Bomb (Machina II) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Perhaps the "hole in the wall" description of the woman in question, is meant as a belittling sexual metaphor (basically, she's a slut). Y'know, basically like saying she's vacant & superficial to the point of being like wallpaper (in terms of depth of character), and therefore is as good as dead inside. Also, maybe by the end, all of her 'victims', have become just as hollow as her (due to her treatment of them), and thus, he refers to them also as, "holes in the wall". Maybe this sentiment is also reflected in the music, being as lethargic and nonchalant as it is. Dunno, just a thought/interpretation. And I have to say, I do like it ... |

| Eels – Friendly Ghost Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I forget to mention how the lines, "If you're scared to die you better not be scared to live" are similar in meaning/sentiment to these found in 'P.S You Rock My World' : - "a careful man tries To dodge the bullets While a happy man takes a walk" The protagonist in 'Friendly Ghost' is scared of the unknown (the ghost) at the start of the song, as he fears for his physical safety (reflecting his fear of death), whilst also seeking to protect his emotional self from becoming vulnerable (reflecting his fear of life). However, by the end of the song, he chooses to embrace the consequences, whatever they may be, and thus, gives up both his elemnts of his fear simultaneously. |

| Eels – Friendly Ghost Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"A friendly ghost, is all I need" seems to me to be a double-entendre, which can be interpreted in two completely different/opposing ways... It can either be seen as an unhappy person's negative reaction to an event they see as just another incident in their bad-luck streak. You know the old cliche "oh - that's all I need!"; resultingly, in this scenario, they are dismissing any personal desire to interact with the ghost (and would supposedly be happy if it tunred out that the ghost was in fact, not real). On the other hand, they seem to be openly longing - and potentially grateful for - any opportunity that life can offer them, including the strange situation they seem to have found themselves in (in this manner, they are hopeful the ghost is real). I like this, as he repeats this refrain throughout the song, and although the prospect of a ghost inhabiting his house is a scary and an unwanted proposition at first (and seemingly a nuisance), he grows steadily more curious and open to the idea (as is evident throughout the various verses of the song, as it progresses). I think this cleverly demonstrates the potentially contradictory nature of our instincts and desires - here the narrator's character is hesitant and defensive at the prospect of embracing the unknown (and potentially leaving himself vulnerable - especially emotionally), however, underneath he truly wants to be able to open himself up, and cure his loneliness by striking up a relationship with this 'ghost'. I won't patronise by quoting all the relevant lyrics and moments in the song to which I've referred to, I'm sure it's all obvious to you. Anyway, love this song - musically very fun too. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Innosense Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's interesting how Corgan spelt the word with an "s" - surely a pun for the word "sense" ... Maybe he's trying to get across that innocence is way of sensing, or feeling the world around you; a form of perception, an outlook (possibly on life), which while maybe considered idealistic, can open up many new possibilities, purely through the wide-eyed optimism that lies at its heart. |

| Yoko Kanno – Butterfly Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Great song - loving the jazz. To me, this sounds like an ode to a man (from a woman's perspective). The muse in question, might be their partner, or an unrequited love. Either way though, they undoubtedly play an important role in the woman's life. However, just as much of a certainty, is the notion that the love story itself (at the heart of this song), has not been fully realised. It seems the man cannot be tied-down, and is a elusive and enigmatic figure. Quite fitting for the character of Spike Spiegal, as I'm sure it was intended. |

| Ashes Divide – Defamed Lyrics | 17 years ago |

No comments? Okay, I'll be the first - this seems like, to me, to either be referencing a celebrity/the celebrity lifestyle, or perhaps even a religious/moral leader (no doubt in a position of respective responsibility). Billy's perspective seems to be coming from the sidelines, removed from the whole process, "My face pressed against the glass wanting to know" - He is attempting to objectively advise the person in question, on how they should "come clean" to those whom they are deceiving/stringing along. Billy is fully aware of what goes on behind the curtains. He's even witnessed said person, miss a valuable opportunity to reveal the lies, and break down all the pretence once and for all, "I watched you wash away any chance of coming clean to anyone" However, Billy doesn't come across as aggressive in his stance, but rather, somewhat sympathetic for the position the person in question, finds themselves in, "You're trying hard to change, but they won't let you" - This is because the context of their position requires that they play out a certain type of role, for the 'benefit' of the masses - this traps them (ironically so) into a place where they are responsible for maintaining the illusionary/fantastical construct they are an integral part of - which in turn, restricts their options, and opportunites for escape. Ultimately, he desires everyone to leave the situation unscathed, and to go their seperate ways, and be their own people, "You don't owe them anything You don't owe me anything" Anyway, a great song - has hints of new-wave (and by that, I mean the original, post-punk era definition of 'new-wave') all over it. Very catchy, and uplifting. In fact, I think it would make a great single for the UK - with the right kind of backing/promotion behind it, it could definitely be successful. I'd love to see an accompanying music video for it, too. |

| Tool – Intolerance Lyrics | 17 years ago |
My personal favourite Tool song. Alot of the suggestions other people have cited for the song's original intentional meaning, seem very likely, as well as the various inspirations behind its origin. In regards to myself - I think it's message, is applicable to all kinds of walks of life. I think that that is a central point - it's relevent, as long as humans interact with one another - it's our nature - "No one is innocent". |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| ...further more (I'm not too sure if I made this clear in my previous post), I also don't see it as about any particular relationship, but more as an ironic deconstruction of the conceptual ideal of love - indirectly referencing the actual reality of it. | |
| Radiohead – Where Bluebirds Fly Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Actually, the song was originally written as a semi-classical/experimental piece, and Jonny even had numerous musicians perform the score for a BBC performance, once (there are recordings of it on the internet, aswell as the original realisation of the idea behind the song, 'Arpeggi' - both are easy enough to get a hold of at some radiohead fansite, in the forums section). The version that appears as a HTTT b-side (the officially released studio recording) is, in a sense, a remix (this version's life began as RH's intro music during their small, brief 2002 tour). |

| Radiohead – Last Flowers Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's about depression. It's a very personal song to Thom, as he wrote it during the OKC sessions, and was prompted by the depression he was suffering through, at the time. Notice how emotive his performances are, every time he plays the song? I have no doubt that depression was the original 'muse' behind the song. I too (also years ago), went through a period of clinical depression, and he articulates the internal panic one feels, at the possibility of being left alone to wallow in one's own negative thoughts/emotions (in an endless, cyclical nature) in a beautifully heavy-hearted manner, "I can't face the evening straight" But, he is speaking to someone close to him (probably his partner), asking them to spare him from this moment of pain/weakness, by keeping him company, "You can offer me escape" All of his surroundings only compound his negative thoughts, "Appliances have gone berserk I can not keep up Treading on people's toes Snot-nosed little punk / Houses move and houses speak" (notice how the latter line is similar to a line in Street Spirit, "rows of houses, are beraing down on me, I can feel their blue jands touching me" - recalling the types of associations he has with the things that get him down). He pleads with his lover to embrace him, so they can share the burden (which he also imagines she can relate to herself), "If you take me then you'll get relief" He doesn't care what they talk about, as long as he can keep his mind busy and distracted (the subject is unimportant, he just wants her company, and to show she's there for him), "And if I'm gonna talk I just wanna talk Please don't interrupt Just sit back and listen" It gets to the point where one becomes unable to ignore the overwhelming sensation, if left to one's own devises, "It's too much Too bright Too powerful". - That was all a little rushed, but I hope you get the gist. |

Hey yeah, you're not far off the original intention: I recently read - in the Fuzzy Warbles' Volume 5 booklet - something about Partridge saying this song is about 'lost childhood innocence', and I think it is also about the boundless scope of a child's imagination, with the imagery of the sea acting as the muse that connects the old (child's) mind with the new. I love this song even more, now :¬) - A sorely underrated XTC song (and song in general) - one of my all time favs. |

| Can – Mary, Mary So Contrary Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Fair enough - on the whole I could agree with you, but on a couple of occasions their earlier material was just as good (if not better in some cases - hence this being my favourite song and all). I would never simply state "this era is better than the other". It depends on the song. Anyway, I think that's enough of an off topic tangent for now. - You made me tarnish the section of my favourite Can song *sniff* |

| Radiohead – Where Bluebirds Fly Lyrics | 18 years ago |
To me, it sounds like parts of the lyrics to "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" from Wizard of Oz (or at least a bastardized version of them, where he gets 'sidetracked' after a few verses...) Here are the lyrics to that song, anyway: Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high There's a place that I heard of Once in a lullabye Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue And the dream that you dare to dream Really does come true One day I wish upon a star Wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemondrops Way upon the chimney tops That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Blue birds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why, oh why can't I? Where troubles melt like lemondrops Way upon the chimney tops That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Blue birds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why, oh why can't I? |

| This song was apparently inspired by the novel "Riddley Walker" by Russell Hoban (according to the record's liner notes). | |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Pug Lyrics | 18 years ago |
About the speaker wanting to be emotionally and sexually used by their lover. I think the "long-distance realtionship" stuff is a metaphor - there is no real communication or understanding between the two, it's just fulfilment of lust, in a self-deprecating manner. It makes the speaker feel wanted and seemingly boosts their low self-esteem (although it will actually accentuate it, and this is why they keep coming back), and the 'other' seems to receive an ego boost from the speaker's constant, undivided attention on them, and the speaker's lust for reciprocation of such attention, back. Anyway, I think the speaker is male, and submissive, whilst the 'other' is female, and a dominatrix-type figure. |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song has to be sarcastic - just listen to the sneering tone that Corgan delivers pretty much throughout the song (the chorus in particular - "Love: it's who you know"). Plus, the music is distorted: it's not natural - like the lyrical sentiment, it's warped and been perverted. Alot of Mellon Collie seems to be about expressing the contradictions of human thought (and emotions); although being able to acknowledge them, one is still subject to their whims. PS The final lyric is missing: "Love solves everything!!!!! - LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEE" |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – In the Arms of Sleep Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Considering what Wurby Tictoc said, could this song also be Corgan pleading to his 'children' (songs) to come to him, before he can rest? maybe it's part of a multi-conceptualized pun? |
| Shriekback – Nemesis Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I just read that this is indirectly inspired by the film, "Apocalypse Now": - a b-side version of this song has a sample of Marlon Brando speaking over a part of it. "Apocalypse Now" was, in turn, inspired by Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". Only now do I truly see how much of this song's imagery is about cannibalism... |

Goddamn! it pisses me off to no end how no-one has commentated on this song. Fucking AMAZING lyrics. Fucking A-MA-ZING. The power behind them in the actual instrumentation in the song is so fucking fitting. It's dirty as fuck, and straight-out in-your-face telling how it is all around us, with a strikingly derisive sneer. |
