Stevie Nicks said in an interview she wrote this song about Lindsay Buckingham towards the end of their relationship when it was at its most turbulent. She said the 'meaning' of the song was an invitation for him to leave their relationship if he chose to because she wanted out likewise. He wrote a song in reply which was the now famous Fleetwood Mac song "Go your own way," which is basically about the same thing as Dreams, but in Stevie's words, more blunt and insensitive. So much so, 'Go your own way' just offended and upset Nicks even more because she believed her song "Dream's" was a polite way of breaking up, quite unlike Lindsay's more forceful and offensive break-up retort. |

I also get the impression he is singing about someone he knows that had a mental disorder. Hence the phrases about dreams, I.e. the sufferer has disturbing dreams that are a symptom of the disorder and also the line about plugging ears when screaming. Patients in institutions are always heard screaming at all hours of the night. Another line in the song "Can't go on, thinking nothings wrong," may be a reference to the fact that the sufferer is in denial of their condition. |

I interpret it as being about a guy who has a huge crush on some other woman, which develops because she plays around with him a bit. He eventually realises that he'll never actually get her because he's not good enough and he is writing about his frustration at not being good enough and being jilted. |

Apparently the backdrop/setting for this song is Bundaberg in south east Queensland. Its funny though, the setting appears to be more applicable to a cane town further north of Townsville, eg Innisfail where the climate is more characteristic of the climate described in this song. |

Its a great song and it has a lot of 'girls shouldn't take crap from men' attitude, however I also interpret it as having strong feminist undertones and that she is in a way singing about hating men (Misandry), which is disappointing really because some men have more on their mind than a one-nighter. |

I recently karaoke'd this song on a cruise ship holiday. It went off like a bomb: its a real crowd pleaser. In my opinion this is one of the most uplifting songs ever written. If at any time you feel your unattractive, just start singing this to yourself and you'll feel a lot better. I thought until I read Sangsue comment that this song was poking fun of anorexic fashion models, but is poking fun of gym nuts instead. Maybe both perhaps? |

| Billy Joel – The River Of Dreams Lyrics

In an interview Billy Joel said he stumbled across this song by accident. He said he woke up one morning and out of the blue had this phrase in his mind, "In the middle of the night." He tried to dismiss it thinking it was nothing, but couldn't shake it and even started trying to sing the phrase in the shower. It got to the point where he just had to sit down and try and make a song out of it. While writing it, the song took on a gospel sort of style and he thought to himself, theres no way I'm going to do gospel music. Alas it did become a gospel song. But perhaps it doesn't really mean anything, its just a song he made up around a phrase that got stuck in his head. |

My impression is its about WW1. The lines 'So just open fire As you hit the shore' sort of describes what happened during the war between Australian and Turkish soldiers at Galipoli (for example) one army would be deployed on the shore line and open fire on the enemy that would be waiting for them. Also 'hoist that rag' may be a reference to waving or hoisting a white flag, which means surrender in military terms. |

I think its songs like this that demonstrate Waits is the 'Nightmare on Elm st' of musicians. This song is pure 110% creepy. |

There appear to be several references to the KKK. The song conjures up images of the old film "Mississippi Burning" when ever I hear it. In that film the local sheriff department are all active Klan members, hence the connection to "badges and chosen whites" in the song. |

The chorus line "Those men will break your bones,
Don't know how to build stable homes." appears to be a reference to domestic violence. Specifically beating ones spouse or children does nothing to promote a stable family environment. |
