Colin Hay – Waiting For My Real Life To Begin Lyrics 7 years ago
This song could be interpreted so many ways. I see it as a man that is going through a hard time in his life, waiting for something better to happen. Or he is simply living a life he does not enjoy. However is he not actively doing anything to change his circumstances, all he is doing is waiting for a different life to start for him.

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
I'll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down, down, down, on me
--- I think this speaks to his desperation for his life to change. He thinks it is possible that it could happen soon and keeps waiting for it. He is not actively doing anything to change his cercumstances, he is just waiting "for his ship to come in"( as the saying goes). When it happens he's convinced he'll stand at the forefront and be able to handle all the hardships that will come his way. Makes it seem as if perhaps this current life is filled with hardships that he has trouble handling. Much like people that think their troubles will change so long as certain life situations change, such as having more money, changing jobs, moving, etc., but for the most part money doesn't solve deep rooted problems, a new job doesn't always change a dissatisfaction with a career path, etc

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in
But don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
--- I believe this is a wife, could be any person that cares about him though. They are telling him to look at what is good, that is what will help him. He is resistant and basically shrugs the advice off by saying he is not meant to live his current life and he just needs to wait for his real life to start.

When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
--- He is not actively attempting to change his life, he is just waiting for something to miraculously change for him. When he wakes up, everything is still the same as it was, yet he seems a bit surprised that nothing happened. In his dreams he is amazing and can do anything and is the hero slaying dragons.

And down this beaten path, and up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again
And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
--- I think he could be walking in the footsteps of his younger days, when he was young and a different life seemed possible. Perhaps he is thinking through all the things he could have done. His wife tells him to stop living in the past and exist in the present. He could also be walking in the not so distant past where everything was less difficult. Maybe he had a great job and lost it and is now waiting for a great new job to come along. He is wearing a "mask", pretending everything is fine and will turn out great when this new life starts. His wife recognizes that the mask is wearing thin and he is not as able to hide his real feelings.

Let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
---- his response to his wife is reminiscent of a desperate gambler. He wants just one more chance before he quits. He cannot imagine that the odds are against him, he is certain that he can win. However, like a compulsive gambler, one more roll is not going to be enough.

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, soon
It's just that times are lean
----- he is still waiting, but even more desperate now. He is making excuses as to why it's not occurring and depreately attempting to convince himself that it will happen soon. If he is waiting for that new job, he is sure that there will be a call on the answering machine. If there is not a message on the machine he can just tell himself that times are tough and that's why it didn't happen yet.

This song is very depressing. One can picture a man desperately attempting to change his life cercumstances almost in vain. His wife recognizes that he is sinking into depression waiting for this "real life" to start. She wants him to come back to the present and see what is good about life, but he just stares into the future, waiting for some miracle to happen and change his current circumstances.

Ruth B – Lost Boy Lyrics 7 years ago
Peter Pan is a story about not growing up, and about childhood. Childhood is for many a time of joy, innocence and being carefree. Neverland is a place that exists in the moment, like a child's mind. The character of Peter is someone who is never past that moment he lives in. I think this song is about getting back to those feelings of childhood, back to that carefree nature during times of struggle to even nessesarily during deep depressive episodes, but just general sad or disappointing times. It's about living in the moment and not thinking to the future.

There was a time when I was alone
Nowhere to go and no place to call home
My only friend was the man in the moon
And even sometimes he would go away, too
-- I think this sets the tone. The speaker feels lost and alone in the world. He feels unconnected to his home (and family) and finds himself without friends. At this moment in his life he is not at a good place.

Then one night, as I closed my eyes
I saw a shadow flying high
He came to me with the sweetest smile
Told me he wanted to talk for awhile
He said, "Peter Pan, that's what they call me
I promise that you'll never be lonely," and ever since that day
-- I think he finds a brighter note in his life. Someway and through something ( let's say music or art, or writing) he gets to a better place in his mind. A place where he isn't lost and alone. As long as he has that he can't be alone. Peter Pan is a representation of whatever he is using to feel less lost.

He sprinkled me in pixie dust and told me to believe
Believe in him and believe in me
Together we will fly away in a cloud of green
To your beautiful destiny
As we soared above the town that never loved me
I realized I finally had a family
Soon enough we reached Neverland
Peacefully my feet hit the sand
And ever since that day

-- the joy of what he found has made him more confident in himself, wants him to believe he can make it. This thing sprinkles him with pixie dust because it allows him to escape. He can get away from his unhappiness. His Peter Pan (music, art, writing), takes him to Neverland. It's takes him to the moment. He is not looking to the past of the future, he is just existing in the now (i.e.-Neverland)

I am a lost boy from Neverland
Usually hanging out with Peter Pan
And when we're bored we play in the woods
Always on the run from Captain Hook
"Run, run, lost boy," they say to me
Away from all of reality
-- love these lyrics. Ever since he found his "Peter Pan" he is with him/it. He isn't lost depresses anymore, because he is (playing music, painting, writing, etc). He is on the run from his Captain Hook ( his enemy, the things that bring him down). The times he is with his "Peter Pan" he is in "Neverland", i.e. Not worrying about anything but the present.

Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Wendy Darling
Even Captain Hook, you are my perfect story book
Neverland, I love you so
You are now my home sweet home
Forever a lost boy at last
-- I think here he realizes that the things that make him happy, and even troubling times and things makes his life meaningful. Without bad there is no good and he knows this. Even if there are bad times he always has his Neverland to retreat to. It's a place he will always be able to get to through his "Peter Pan"

Hozier – Arsonist's Lullaby Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is about battling but also embracing personal demons. It's about taking those terrible things that may have happened and creating strength.

When I was a child I heard voices,
Some would sing and some would scream,
You soon find you have few choices,
I learned the voices died with me.
-- I think this part indicated that something tragic may have happened when this person was a child. This event was impactful. He indicated that some things were good "singing" , and some were not "screaming", inthis event or series of events. We could be hearing the description of an abused child. He has no escape, no choices, as he is just a child. The abuse goes on long enough to "kill" his soul and the voices "die" because good or bad no longer make a difference.

When I was a child I'd sit for hours,
Staring into open flame,
Something in it had a power,
Could barely tear my eyes away.
-- I believe the flame represents what was tragic. He is trapped experience the impactful event. It is apart of his life. Something he has to deal with all the time. Again if we look at the flame as abuse, it is something that he sees all the time, something powerful in it. However, it could be anything negatively eventful.

When I was sixteen my senses fooled me,
Thought gasoline was on my clothes,
I knew that something would always rule me,
I knew the scent was mine alone.
-- Teenage years are often a time when people have an emerging sense of who they are and who they may be. I think that he is saying that at 16 he felt as if he may be allowing his fire to spread out of control due to his own actions (gasoline). However, he realizes that it is something that will always be apart of him, something that would dictate certain decisions and courses of actions. It wasn't that he was actually creating "fire", he was just recognizing what was inside of him.

All you have is your fire,
And the place you need to reach,
Don't you ever tame your demons,
But always keep them on a leash.
-- I think the use of fire here is very meaningful. As I stated above, I think the flame was the impactful event. Since it was impactful, it is not hard to believe that it left residual damage to him. He has a bit of that flame in him, as flames and fire can spread. However, he is using what happened to him, his fire to push him forward. It is referring to the fact that things happen to everyone and those things change us, inspire us, etc. and we should use it to move forward and be where we need to be. We should never get rid of what can drive us, even if it stems from something bad, Just contain it don't allow it to control us (ie-keep it on a leash)

When I was a man I thought it ended
When I knew love's perfect ache,
But my peace has always depended
On all the ashes in my wake.
-- I think as he becomes an adult it is easier for him to come to terms with what happened to him. He is in control of this demons, or he thinks he is. However, since he is using that "fire" as a drive forward it is inevitable that there are going to be times when he is not in compete control of it. His peace is depends on how he controls that fire. If this is a story of an abused child, love(a wife) could be wonderful and fulfilling for him. However, he knows that the fire is still inside if him, and his peach is dictated by his control of that..

Iron & Wine – Passing Afternoon Lyrics 9 years ago
This is a very beautiful song, obviously about the passage of time. It uses the seasons to represent time. While it seems as if this time refers to a year, it is actually go through an entire life time. I believe this song is about a son speaking of his mother.

There are times that walk from you like some passing afternoon
-- Beginning refers to just how simple and quick it is to go through life. The idea that one day you look back and wonder, "where did all that time go?"

Summer warmed the open window of her honeymoon
And she chose a yard to burn but the ground remembers her
Wooden spoons, her children stir her Bougainvillea blooms
--- This is referring to the beginning of her adult life. It begins with the summer season. It begins with her honeymoon. It goes to the house she chooses to raise her children in. A place well loved, and a yard played in a tended to (as the ground remember the woman still). Her young children "stir" (disrupt) her planted and tended flowers. The flowers represent her life, her experiences, the changes she goes through .

There are things that drift away like our endless, numbered days
--- Life goes on routine, and things drift and leave her life. This could refer to her early married life, babies rocked in arms, carefully tended flowers, etc.

Autumn blew the quilt right off the perfect bed she made
--- We are in autumn, further into her life. Life is different than she thought it was going to be. She planned a life a certain way, but its different. Most people look to the future and have a set image of how their life, their children, their home, etc is going to be, and often life changes things, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Either way, it is typically never the same as imagined.

And she's chosen to believe in the hymns her mother sings
Sunday pulls its children from the piles of fallen leaves
--- The mother is raising the children in religion, most likely Christian. Hymns refer to a religious song/poem. Sunday is a day of worship for Christians, thus Sunday service pulls her children to Church. They are a Christian family.

There are sailing ships that pass all our bodies in the grass
--- I believe this references the saying "that ship has sailed". She is now later in life. Probably around 40's or 50's. She has allowed other opportunities to pass. "all our bodies" refers to her family. Those opportunities passes her by as she was raising her family.

Springtime calls her children until she let's them go at last
--- We are later in her life. "Spring" calls her children b/c they have grown up, it calls to them until she finally must let them go (college, adulthood, etc).

And she's chosen where to be, though she's lost her wedding ring
Somewhere near her misplaced jar of Bougainvillea seeds
--- I believe that she is not really feeling the love in her marriage anymore, but she choose to stay anyway (she's chosen where to be), it is a conscience choice. She knows it is not a real marriage anymore. She didn't lose the actual ring, just the symbol it represents. Its lost somewhere back when she lost the seeds to the flowers she used to tend. It gives the idea that she no longer tends to those flowers first mentioned in Summer.

These flowers are an important metaphor for her life. They are something she tended to as a young, married woman, it is something that "drifted away", like her marriage. The seeds/love are misplaced, lost somewhere along life's journey. Perhaps she doesn't even remember when.

There are things we can't recall, Blind as night that finds us all
--- We do not remember everything about our lives. The forgetfulness of everyday life is a dark and inevitable as the night that always finds us.

Winter tucks her children in, her fragile china dolls
--- Winter represents the elderly part of her life. She is old a frail (like a china doll).

But my hands remember hers, rolling around the shaded ferns
Naked arms, her secrets still like songs I'd never learned
--- This is the son remembering his mother. His hands remember the feeling of his mothers perhaps in a game of holding hands and the walk around one of the ferns in the yard (again going back to a young mother in a well loves home and yard with her children). He is remember the time in her life represented by Summer (naked arms) This memories reminds him off all the secrets and things he doesn't know, or never bothered to learn.

There are names across the sea, only now I do believe
Sometimes, with the window closed, she'll sit and think of me
--- The window is closed now (Winter), a direct contrast to her young life in Summer when the window was open. Her son believes that with her time she sits by her window to think of him.

But she'll mend his tattered clothes and they'll kiss as if they know
A baby sleeps in all our bones, so scared to be alone
--- His parents are still together. There is no love, just routine care of each other. She mends his clothes, perhaps he still fixes the faucet for her, etc. They kiss almost as if they are aware that being apart is more terrifying that having each other, even if the love is long gone

Family of the Year – Hero Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about someone who just wants to be normal and average. Its a song about coming into adulthood and the pressure to be somebody. There is often a pressure for youth to come out of school, get a great job, make big money, do great things, etc. This song is about wanted to just be average for while.

When I listen to this song I picture a high school senior talking with a guidance counselor or parents about the future. Parent and child talking about the career track the child should head down, the responsibilities ahead. I see the parents reminding the child that a good job is a must for success, having the American dream, etc. A imagine a child that is not ready for that yet, it is not something they want. They want the parent to understand what they want and deserve at this point in their life.

Let me go
I don't wanna be your hero
I don't wanna be a big man
Just wanna fight like everyone else
--- He is saying that he wants to be who he wants. He is asking the person that is pressuring him to be more (maybe a parents, teacher, etc) to let him go be his own man. He doesn't want to a responsible adult right now in a high powered life of job. He just wants to be carefree for a bit. He doesn't want to be a hero or a big man (ie - responsible, settled down, etc).

Your masquerade
I don't wanna be a part of your parade
Everyone deserves a chance to
Walk with everyone else
--- He doesn't want to conform to what others think he should. He is talking about a masquerade, or hiding who he really is, he does not want that. The listener is given the image of a parade, which is usually a group of people walking in a line, from point A to B (can be compared to how adult life can sometimes be - wake up, kids to school, work, pick kids up, grocery store, home again, make dinner, etc). He wants that laid back life for now. He doesn't want to put on a suit and tie(masquerader), and "parade" off to work and through life. He is saying that everyone should have the right to "walk with everyone else" for be like everyone else is they choose.

While holding down
A job to keep my girl around
And maybe buy me some new strings
And her and I out on the weekend
--- He wants a job that pays enough to get him and his girlfriend out on the weekends, and afford him some new guitar strings if he needs them. He wants the average lazy job, enough to get by.

And we can whisper things
Secrets from my American dreams
Baby needs some protection
But I'm a kid like everyone else
--- He has his own "American dream". At the moment it is not about a high paying powerful job, its something simpler. He is not ready to be an adult yet, he is still holding onto the carefree nature of childhood.

Mumford & Sons – I Will Wait Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a very interesting song, as it can be interpreted so many different ways. It can religious, a song about someone coming back to their home and loved one, etc.

I am an atheist that does not believe in God or religion. However, I do see this song as a man who is talking to God. It is likely that he has died and is directly talking to God, or going through a difficult time in life and praying as if he is talking to God. I see it as possibly both scenarios, but will interpret the latter of the two.

"Well I came home like a stone
And I fell heavy into your arms
These days of dust, which we've known
Will blow away with this new sun"
--- I see this as a man that has been through a lot. He is looking to God for comfort. He is tired and simply want to fall into his arms and for God to help him or comfort him. He is looking to live life better and believes that his past day are over and a new chapter is coming with the new day (rising sun).

"And I'll kneel down; wait for now
And I'll kneel down; know my ground"
--- Reference to prayer. Being a believer and waiting for God/heaven.

"And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you"
--- Obviously he will wait for God/heaven

"So break my step, and relent
Well you forgave, and I won't forget
Know what we've seen and him with less
Now in some way shake the excess"
--- He is asking God relent and to allow him to rest and for things to change for him. He has done things that he is not proud of, possibly really bad things, but God has forgiven him. He is grateful and won't forget that. He wants to live a modest life, he has seen people with a lot and others with less. He want to shake the excess from his life.

"Now I'll be bold as well as strong
And use my head alongside my heart
So tame my flesh and fix my eyes
A tethered mind freed from the lies"
--- He is promising to be strong going forward. He will not give into what once brought him down. He is saying he will think about his actions and consequences. He will also act kindly and with his heart. He is asking God to make him a better person by taming him and fixing what he sees (so he knows the right choices to make). He is free from all the lies he thought were correct. His mind is no longer tethered to them.

"Raise my hands; paint my spirit gold
Bow my head; keep my heart slow"
--- Another reference to prayer, and worship.

Avicii – Wake Me Up Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about going through life as a young inexperienced individual.

"Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start"
-- The inexperienced person is going though life and knows that what is ahead is unknown. He is guided by his spirit. He doesn't know where he will end up, but he knows where he can start now.

They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well that's fine by me
-- I think by "they" he means the older generation, those who have been through some of life's experiences and are well into their journey. They see the care free nature of someone so young and naive about life and basically are telling him that he is living life like it's a dream (he has yet to really experience or understand it). They warn that if he does not open his eyes and take it all seriously and stop living guided by his spirit, it is all just going to pass him by, and he will look back and wonder where the time went. However, he is loving the way he is living and if that is what happens, he is fine with it.

"So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself, and I
Didn't know I was lost"
-- He is living life and enjoying it. "They" are telling him he is living in a dream. It is a dream/life he loves, therefore he is asking to be woken up from it when everything is over, when he is older, or when he is now the "they" generation he is referring to. He knows that "they" probably associate his life style with a person that is just finding themselves, but according to him, he never even knew he was lost.

"I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands."
-- I love this line. He tried worrying about all of life's troubles just like everyone else does. However, he stopped b/c there was no point in it, so he stopped worrying.

"Hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don't have any plans"
-- He does have wishes to do some things, but at the moment he is care free and has no plans to do so.

"Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life's a game made for everyone
And love is a prize"
-- He is wishing to live young and free forever. He enjoys how he lives his life. He is not afraid to close his eyes and as mentioned above get "caught up in a dream". He sees life as a game, something fun and something that can be played, enjoyed and won. Love, be it love for someone else, love for one self, love of life, etc is one of the prizes.

Imagine Dragons – Demons Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about a person that has been through a lot in their life. The demons refer to the things from said past that trouble and effect that persons daily life and interactions. I think he is talking to someone he loves, trying to explain what he is about and why they should stay far from him.

"When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale

I want to hide the truth
I want to shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide"
--- He is talking about when everything seems to be going terrible and failing. He knows it effects him and how he sees the world, behaves, etc perhaps he becomes depressed or angry. He wants to protect the person he cares about, he doesn't want him/her to know what happens to him when these demons surface. However, he knows that he can't hide it from the person he cares about. He knows he cannot control it.

"When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide"
--- He is asking the person he cares about to try and understand him when his demons surface. He wants them to look into his eyes and see he has changed, and to know the demons dwell just under the surface, so close it can be seen in his eyes. He is warning the person to stay away and not get close to him. He is telling said person that its dark inside, what he feels is dark.

"Don’t want to let you down
But I am hell bound"
--- He doesn't want to disappoint the person he cares about b/c of his demons, but the things he has done are something he deems so terrible that he would be sent to hell (either literally if he is religious, metaphorically if his life is hell, etc).

"Though this is all for you
Don’t want to hide the truth"
--- He doesn't want to hide the truth from the person he cares about, but he will still put up a facade. He is letting that person know that the facade of nothing being wrong is all for the sake of the person he cares about.

"They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go"
--- He is absolving himself of any blame in the situation. How he acts is in him, and he cannot change it. Its all destiny/fate, not his doing or choosing. Because of that he needs to let the person he cares about go.

"Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save their light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how"
--- I think this can be interpreted two ways. Unlike him there are not demons in the other persons eyes. The other person is his exact opposite.(1) He does not want to influence the person he cares about and take the light out of their eyes b/c of how he acts or feels. OR (2) He wants to save the light in the other persons eyes for him. He wants to know how that person obtains in and keeps it. Either way he knows that there is no way to escape his demons without that persons help.

Selah – I Will Carry You (Audrey's Song) [*] Lyrics 12 years ago
Such a beautiful song. It is about the death of a child.

There were photographs I wanted to take
Things I wanted to show you
Sing sweet lullabies, wipe your teary eyes
Who could love you like this?
--- A mother/father is thinking about all the things they expected to do with their child.

People say that I am brave but I'm not
Truth is I'm barely hanging on
But there's a greater story
Written long before me
Because He loves you like this
--- People look at this parent and talk about how brave he/she is going though this tragic time. She knows better, she is distraught and is just about making it. However, she knows that there is a purpose to the death. There is destiny(a greater story) playing out. The child is apart of Gods plan.

So I will carry you
While your heart beats here
Long beyond the empty cradle
Through the coming years
I will carry you
All my life
And I will praise the One Who's chosen me
To carry you
--- The parent will carry the memory of her/his child with them beyond having the empty cradle in the house, though their entire life. The parent will praise God for allowing him/her to have the short opportunity with their child and the memory they get to keep.

Such a short time
Such a long road
All this madness
But I know
That the silence
Has brought me to His voice
And He says
--- The child's time on earth was short, but the road ahead(to mourn the death) is long. It is going to be a hard time but the parent knows that is has brought him/her to God. God's words are comforting.

I've shown her photographs of time beginning
Walked her through the parted seas
Angel lullabies, no more teary eyes
Who could love her like this?
--- While the parent is not able to do everything they dreamed they would do(taking photos, showing the child things, singing lullabies, etc.), God is able. The things that God is able to do with this child are beyond anything that anyone living can imagine. The child can experience photograph's from the beginning of time, have angels sing him/her lullabies, and never experience sadness.

I will carry you
While your heart beats here
Long beyond the empty cradle
Through the coming years
I will carry you
All your life
And I will praise the One Who's chosen Me
To carry you
--- God tells the parents of the child that He will be there for them. He is their father and will do the same for them as they would do for their own child. He will carry them through the tough times, but long beyond the initial tragedy, all though their life. God will praise the person that has chosen Him to carry them.

Pearl Jam – The End Lyrics 12 years ago
I believe that this song is about a man who is dying.

What were all those dreams we shared
Those many years ago?
What were all those plans we made
Now left beside the road?
Behind us in the road
-- This is a couple that has been together for awhile. He is looking back on their early years and reminiscent of all the dreams and plans they had for the future. He wants to know what happened to all the dreams that they had and believed in as a couple. He is thinking about all the plans that somehow got left behind as they "traveled" through life together.

More than friends I always pledged
Cause friends they come and go
-- He thinks as his wife and his relationship and more than friendship. He knows most friendships are fleeting, and recognizes that he has more than that with his wife.

People change as does everything
I wanted to grow old
Just want to grow old
-- Another reference to the fact that this is a mature couple. He is different than the man he was when they first married. He wants to grow old with his wife and seems desperate, pleading to do so, the first indications that this man is ill.

Slide on next to me
I’m just a human being
I will take the blame
But just the same
This is not me
You see
Believe
I’m better than this
-- He is asking his wife to be with him. He is reminding her that he is human and susceptible to the faults of humanity. I personally think this may be an indication that the illness is changing who he is. Perhaps he is not handling it the way he or his wife think he should be. Maybe he is angrier or loses his temper and argues b/c of the stress, etc. He is saying that its not him, wants her to see that. He is better than what the illness has made him.

Don’t leave me so cold
Or buried beneath the stones
I just want to hold on
And know I’m worth your love
Enough
I don’t think
There’s such a thing
-- He is asking her not to distance herself from him(another reason I think what I wrote above). He wants her love and to be worthy of it. However, he doubts that anyone is worthy of such love(since she is such an amazing woman).

It’s my fault, Now I been caught
A sickness in my bones
How it pains to leave you here
With the kids on your own
Just don’t let me go
-- It never says what illness he may have, but perhaps he blames himself for it. I don't think that it was self inflicted. I think the blame is simply his thinking that someone has to be blamed(ie- I should have been stronger, etc). He knows that he is going to die, and the it hurts him to know that his wife with be left alone to raise their children. He pleads for her not to let him go.

Help me see myself
Cause I can no longer tell
Looking out from the inside of
The bottom of a well
It’s hell
I yell
But no one hears
-- He is so lost in the illness, and it has changed him. He wants his wife to help him remember who he was before, he cannot even recognize himself anymore. He sees this illness differently from everyone else looking at him. He is trapped in a hell that no one can understand. He is screaming on the inside, but no hears him.

Before I disappear
Whisper in my ear
Give me something to echo
In my unknown futures ear
-- He wants his wife to say something comforting to him before he dies.

My dear
The End
Comes near
I’m here
But not much longer
-- He is talking to his wife, telling her that death is coming. He is with her, but it will not be for much longer.

Hey Rosetta – We Made A Pact Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this song. I've read through the lyrics of this song and hope I am interpreting this correctly.

"You, you and i made a pact
a deal that as we lay dying
we'd think about each other then
and smile as we're taken in"
--I think this part is pretty straight forward. Two people made a pact with one another. A deal between good friends, or two lovers(I would lean more toward lovers considering the second verse, and how I interpret that), that when they got to their final moment in life, they would think on the other person and smile(and presumable be joyful at the thought) as they died.

"I, i listened like a little child
to the story of your earthbound pilot
he plummeted so violent
a parachute not opening
and rushing to oblivion
he broke into that knowing grin"
-- This part required a bit more thinking. I would assume the "Earthbound pilot" would be the other persons father(since it is mentioned that it is a "he"). The man singing is listening to a story of his lovers father. This person(the woman's father), has also made the same pact with someone(since he breaks into "that knowing grin"). We can assume that he committed suicide, or caused his death through his own means(drugs, drinking, etc). He plummets fast and violently, with no one to help or save him. His "parachute"(this imagery is important and used again at the end of the song) does not open, therefore no one was there to save him. However, despite the fact that is was quickly rushing to his own demise(ie- oblivion), he thought about the person he made a pact with and was able to smile at his death.

I, i think about that a lot
cause a lot is what i've not got
and a smile is what i least expect
in the clutches of this darkness
-- The singer of the song is focused on her fathers story. He does not have a lot of time left(according to his own admission), and we can assume he is on the same path as the woman's father. He is surrounded by darkness. The reason he is thinking about the father, is b/c he wonder's if he will be able to smile(its what he least expects), as he dies.

You, you i was surprised to hear
your birdsong velvet in my ear
the phone broke its silent stint
i pulled the cord and i needed it
you billowed like a bowl of silk
and slowed me from my ruining
--The phone rings( and we can assume it has not rung in quite some time) He is surprised to hear the voice of his lover(or friend, depending on the interpretation). He describes her voice as something pleasurable to hear, and he wants desperately to hear her. We come back to the parachute imagery. He pulls the chord of his "parachute"(his lover), and she saves him from dieing. This is in direct contrast to her father, whose parachute did not open(his lover was not there). The singer does not need to think of her as he is dieing, b/c she was there for him, to save him.

Garth Brooks – In Lonesome Dove Lyrics 14 years ago
His mother was the one that shot the men. The song is about the woman and her strength. It would make little sense to switch the "main character" of the song from the woman/mother to a ghost of the father. Just like all the other things she did(staying behind in the west, raising her son alone, etc), she shows her strength and kills the men that killed her husband, and had the potential to kill her son.

Rascal Flatts – It's Not Supposed to Go Like That Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a great song, very moving.

I think the meaning is obvious for this song. It is about tragedy, and when it happens no one is prepared for it. Most people reaction to something unexpected and tragic is, "it was not suppose to happen this way".

Most people expect their lives to go a certain way, and it can feel as if we are cheated if it does not. This song seems to deal specifically with the young dieing, and most people feel when someone young dies it is not suppose happen. Children have an unending horizon ahead of them, and when someone dies young it is surprising and unfair.

The chorus of the song sounds exactly what a grieving parent(or loved one) would say when faced with the death of their child. This song is very moving, I can certainly picture someone reacting this way to the loss of their child.

I also agree with Bigmo that the son did not kill the father. He states "If I was a Hill, I’d have put him away", saying that if he had been one of the Hill's he would have killed him. The reason he has no one to fall on is b/c(as Bigmo stated, his other sons were killed, and also b/c the father seemed so bent on revenge that he probably pushed everyone else away except for the son he had left.

Ben Harper – I Shall Not Walk Alone Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a beautiful song, I think you can really hear Harpers emotions while he sings. The slow and calm lyrics, really add to the song.

I think it is obviously that this song is about the persons relationship with God. He has been through a lot. He is tired, broken and worn, but he is knows that he does not walk in this world alone.

"Battered and torn
still I can see the light
tattered and worn
but I must kneel to fight"
-Even though this person is down and been through a lot, he still holds onto faith and God.

"Friend of mine
what can't you spare
I know some times
it gets cold in there"
-He is referring to God when he says friend. He is looking for anything God can spare to help his through tough times.

"When my legs no longer carry
and the warm wind chills my bones
I reach for Mother Mary
and I shall not walk alone"
-He could be referring to death and his last moments, or simply a tough time in his life. If he is talking about death, than he is saying that when the end finally comes, he will go to "Mother Mary"(ie-virgin Mary) and to heaven, thus no longer walking alone in the world like he's been doing

If he is simply talking about hard times, than he is putting his faith in God/virgin mother, to help his through those times and walk with him and give him strength.

"Hope is alive
while we're apart
only tears
speak from my heart"
-Even though he is going through troubles times, there is still hope for him. He still has faith, even though he is separated from God(ie-not in heaven).

"break the chains
that hold us down
and we shall be
forever bound"
-He is talking about death and the earthy chain that keep us here. When that chain is broken(through death), he will be able to join God for eternity and be bound to him forever.

"Beauty that
we left behind
how shall we
tomorrow find"
-It not too late to find the beauty in things. Even if you pass it one day, there is still hope that you will find it in the future.

"Set aside
our weight in sin
so that we
can live again"
-He is talking about seeking to put aside all the sins of his life, and being able to move on and live again. If he has hit troubled times because of these "sins", than letting them go will allow him to live his life again.

Garth Brooks – In Lonesome Dove Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is great, I love the story.

I think the meaning is very straight forward. It is about a woman who was traveling on a wagon train and met a ranger who helped them, everyone else went on but she stayed behind with him. She marries him and they have a son.

One day the husband is killed and the woman is left to raise their son in the harsh land. The son eventually grows up to be a ranger lie his father.

The son catches word that the men that killed his father and going to pass through Lonesome dove to enter Mexico. He stand against them and kills them.

However, there is a legend that gun shots came from an alley way, helping to kill the men. There is no doubt who shot the gun if you asked the people that lived in Lonesome Dove. It is obvious that his mother did not want to lose another family member to these men, so she shot them from the alley.

Drive-By Truckers – Decoration Day Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a great song. I think its meaning is pretty straight forward, but powerful.

This song is about a son who is caught in a feud belonging to his father. He doesn't even know why he is fighting with the other family(Hill), its just something that has been going on since before he was even born.

The father basically influences his children to take part in this feud, to the point of beating the boys in the other family(Hill boys).

In the end the feud between these families brings nothing but the death of the Lawson father by the hands of the Hill boys), and his other sons(dead brother in Lauderdale south). In the end the son has nothing but resentment for his father, when he thinks about him, instead of celebrating his life, he would rather spit on his grave

Lifehouse – From Where You Are Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a really great songs. It meaning is pretty obvious. It is about someone who has died and the person they left behind misses them.

I think the line "I miss all the little things, I never thought that they'd mean everything to me" is the most powerful and true line I have ever heard in a song. For the most part, what we miss about someone we have lost is not the big things, but rather all the little things that are no longer there and leave us feeling empty.

What makes this song great is how simple the meaning is, and how most everyone can relate one way or another to this song.

Savage Garden – Two Beds And A Coffee Machine Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is pretty self explanitory. The lyrics are so powerful.

Its about a woman in an abusive relationship looking back at the abuse she went through. The aftermath of a fight, making sure the husband is asleep before sneaking out with the kids to another hotel room.

Eventually she realizes she has to go back.
"But there are groceries to buy
And she knows she'll have to go home"
She cannot support herself and the children.

I think she gets out of the relationship and after all the years pass she is thinking about how she made it.

"Another bruise to try and hide
Another alibi to write
Another lonely highway in the black of night
But there's hope in the darkness
You know you're going to make it"
I believe this is letting the listener know she got out of the relationship this time, and she made it.

Five for Fighting – Superman (It's Not Easy) Lyrics 17 years ago
This song uses superman as a symbol for someone who is seen as strong/flawless on the outside. Everyone sees him as this great hero, and knows him only in this persona. However on the inside he is radically different.

"I can't stand to fly
I'm not that nieve
I'm just out to find
The better part of me"
-He doesn't see himself as a hero, like others do, he's saying he isn't nieve enough to see himself that way, all he is looking for is a way to find the better part of himself. He isn't doing it for everyone, but for himself.

He is more than just the persona that others percieve him to be "More than a bird...a plane..." He sees himself as only a man. one who pretends to be strong as steel, with no flaws.

"I wish that I could cry
fall upon my knees
find a way to lie
about a home I'll never see"
-He may put on a tough exterior, but inside he wishes he could just let go, cry for the things that he misses and hurts for in life, but knows he cannot.

Basically what he is saying is that even heroes should be able to be weak at times.

Garth Brooks – When You Come Back To Me Again Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song, i have always said the beinning reminds me of my nana.

Basically it is about a person(I'll say man, for convinience) who is lost in life and basically being trown around, broken by circumstances. However there is a person who is there for him(a lighthouse) that guides him through the tough times.

Whether passed on or just absent from his life, the man is still connected to the individual who guides them. He is still reaching for them, and that keeps him hanging on to life. And he is waiting for that individual to come back to him, literally, or through his own death.

Actually Garth wrote this song for his mother, before she died. She was a big inspiration to him. The video is great, and I love how he seems to almost let his emotions get the better of him toward the end of the song, I think it shows that this song was more to him than just lyrics.

Garth Brooks – Pushing Up Daisies Lyrics 17 years ago
Surprised no one commented on this song, I think it has such a great meaning. Simply it's about living each day to the fullest because those days are the most important

"I felt the arrow from
Death's fatal quiver
Come so close
It actually grazed me
I bled the blood and
I felt teh cold shiver
God only knows
How He saved me"
Obviously about someone who came close very close to death, so close God is the only one who knows how he was saved.

"Sometimes my heart is
True as a dove
Sometimes my heart
It betrays me
So I draw my sword for
To fight for my love
But without a wisper
She slays me"
This part is about a person who is in lov with someone, and he is willing to do anything for her/him, and in the end he/she betrays him.

I love this song, so deep for a mupet. It's basically about dreaming If you have a dream than believe in it and don't listen to what others say.

Even when your wishes/dreams don't come true right away(or ever), keep believing, keep looking up at those stars.

In the end when you hear destiny calling to you,go for it. Fullfill your dreams.

I don't think this song has anything to do with cheating. The meaning of this song is a very simple one. He had no idea he was dying, and it's not about terrorism b/c it was written a few years before 9/11.

Simply the guy is getting on plane, probably for a business trip. What I got from the song was that the man bought a postcard that he planned on sending to her when he reached his destination, saying how much he missed her and wished she was with him.

The plane crashes, but somehow the woman manages to get the postcard. I love this song because the postcard and the words the man writes song like he is talking about a vacation spot,

"The weather's nice, it's paradise
It's summertime all year and there's some folks we know
They say, "Hello, I miss you so, wish you were here",
but are also a description of heaven, where he is now. She can feel secure knowing that he is in paradise with people they knew(who remember her and say hello).
