The Flaming Lips – All We Have Is Now Lyrics 16 years ago
I sometimes interpret this as a song about a relationship... and its meaning is beautiful there. Still, I think it's much more likely that this is NOT about a relationship.

From the way the lyrics are arranged it seems as if the future self is talking to him for most of this.
"We're not gonna make it."
He explained how the end will come.
"You and me were never meant to be part of the future.
All we have is now..."

So the "we" is him and his future self, "you" is him, and "me" is the future self talking. It's just himself and his future self.

Sometimes I like to look at this differently. Instead I picture that the main character is turning to a third person, his lover, and says "You and me were never meant to be part of the future. All we have is now..." - paraphrasing what the man from the future has told him.

Like rossmcd said though, either way: make the most of what you have at this moment in time.

The Flaming Lips – One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21 Lyrics 16 years ago
Of course this is a concept album and there is a literal interpretation of the song that is about this robot beginning to have emotions...

To me, It feels like you could take the robot to be representing a person. I think a robot beginning to show emotion is a beautiful analogy for a person coming out of their shell and loving for the first time, unsure of their emotions and what they mean.

John Mayer – Split Screen Sadness Lyrics 16 years ago
Someone said something about John Mayer getting them through their breakup... amen. He did that for me a while back and I'm sure he'll do it again.

Of course I love the line "all you need is love is a lie..." - it's so true, so well said.

I also really love "maybe I'll sleep inside my coat, wait on your porch till you come back home". It's such a beautiful image, who hasn't felt that way about an ex? If I could see my love come home I'd definitely wait on her porch all night.

Injected – Faithless Lyrics 16 years ago
ah finally reading the lyrics this song has so much more meaning. (it's kinda hard to understand him... as sexy as you girls say he is)

anyone who's been on the receiving end of a bad relationship gets this. the type of person who'll never be cruel and always plays the fool. the type of person who won't really stand up for themselves. and you can't even say all the things you're thinking "and i couldn't breathe, i couldn't speak, 'less i drown"

even after all that you'd do it again. "but i'm so blind, i'll do it again..." even if the person is completely faithless.

Weezer – Longtime Sunshine Lyrics 16 years ago
the last part is so sad.
"sometimes i wanna get in a car, close my eyes and drive real fast
keep on going till i get some place where i can truly rest"

implying the only place he can truly rest is in death =(

Everclear – Wonderful Lyrics 16 years ago
i love the part
"no, i don't want to meet your friends
i don't want to start over again
i just want my life to be the same
just like it used to be"

it's so honest. we all know life can't be like it used to be, things change and times goes on. who doesn't want to go back to one of those great times in our lives?

Third Eye Blind – Deep Inside of You Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is brilliant. i love the mix of sexual and emotional meaning in the song. it can really hurt to listen to this song sometimes, i guess that's the mark of how powerful the feelings he describes are...

Zebrahead – Go Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is deep for a zebrahead song, haha. i love it.

it's obviously about how time is short, everything changes, and you have to act before everything is gone.
it most likely has to do with a relationship/breakup.

Lagwagon – Gun In Your Hand Lyrics 17 years ago
So he has this friend whose family has pushed him into this life that he doesn't really want. He has failed initially ("answer to those you have failed..."), but with a lot of effort he turns his life around ("time to clean your room and show you are able to stop beating yourself down"). Now he has this life that everyone has wanted for him ("you've arrived, a wealth of respect, a world of regard, you've always belonged...").

But the message of the song is that it doesn't have to be this way. the next part is "you have to go on, i just want you to feel the gun in your hand". The next verse talks about the struggle this person went through to get all of his success etc.
I think the most telling line is "... i'm not gonna watch you kill yourself to live". This guy is pleasing others by finding success ("living"), but killing himself in the process.

The end of the quote fits the song the most. "Before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, what do you really want?" The point is do what you want. Take control of your life. Although when I listen to this song I kinda feel like he's advocating suicide, giving his friend a gun to kill himself with.

Jets to Brazil – I Typed For Miles Lyrics 17 years ago
i love this song. everyone has hit on the meaning, i just want to say that it is so amazing when he builds up with "i can't think with all this noise" at the end of the song, and the guitar and drums come in strong. this song is brilliant.

The Faint – Paranoiattack Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah I saw this live. It was excellent, an obvious slam on the bush administration, and a great dance song! I hope everyone who loves the song gets it though. Haha, "buying tape to seal us off" - now that was ridiculous. Remember all that duck tape safety stuff? (ready.gov) Mmmmm propaganda.

I completely agree with damn the man. I think everyone knows someone like that. Just as the lyrics go they think it would be better if it was them against the world.

Pavement – Starlings of the Slipstream Lyrics 17 years ago
I've got no idea but I'll take a stab. Like DevastatorJr. said a slipstream is a path behind a plane (or a car or whatever) that makes those behind it go faster because of lowered air pressure. So for the first part of the song if the leader is dead maybe all the followers are crying out because suddenly it's hard because they have no slipstream. Now they are taking control (robbing the skies).

Second part? I dunno. Revenge of the Nerds was funny.

For the "there's no women..." part (coolest lines ever), it probably goes along with following a leader (my mother).
"There's no women in Alaska" is obviously false.
"There's no Creoles in Vermont" is false but there's probably not many creoles in vermont =).
"There's no coast of Nebraska" is true.
Don't believe everything someone says?

Meh.... Pavement is too disjointed...

Pavement – In the Mouth a Desert Lyrics 17 years ago
I think he's talking about trust being broken between two people. The other person is trying to get his trust back, but he's still deciding. He has total control over where the relationship goes (they are begging). However, he isn't inclined to fix anything ("It's what I want").

Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. 2 and 3 Lyrics 18 years ago
In response to yellowpaperose, I believe you can recognize that someone's statements and beliefs are valid even if you think they are a liar, etc. In response to bluegrimlin2, I also had that kind of reaction since I'm atheist/agnostic (that it was sarcastic). The idea that the sarcasm relates to Anne Frank is pretty interesting...

Anyway, going along with the birth imagery, does "in a garbage bin" give anyone else the image of an abortion? Just my first impression.

Chicago – Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? Lyrics 18 years ago
As far as the "we can't all be rock and roll stars" goes, at the time this was written they weren't stars (this was on their first album - which of course was a big success). So it seems much more sincere to me, as if a more average person were singing and feeling it.

Saves the Day – Jukebox Breakdown Lyrics 18 years ago
The lines that don't really work with the girl thing are "I've got a mouth full of blood, and I'll carry this casket if it's what I have to do. Bring on the dark sky, let it cover me entirely." To me that means that Chris is trying to say that he'll sing the songs he sings for us (depressing and everything: "casket" "dark sky") if thats his job, "what I have to do". How does the carrying of the casket work for the girl? It doesn't.
