Third Eye Blind – Losing a Whole Year Lyrics 17 years ago
Haha, i just finished reading the Great Gatsby in English class the other day, and as I was just sitting here listening to Third Eye Blind, not really trying to put any meaning behind it, I was like "woah is this song about the great gatsby?!"
So i came to songmeanings!
& was going to enlighten you all on this revelation, when i read your comments and realized that i was not in fact, the first, or most interesting person to realize this. haha, anyhow it's neat.
& the part about her voice sounding like money is especially what makes me think there is allusions to the book, however, i do believe that the song is about the writers personal experience too, probably relating it to moments in the great gatsby

Rilo Kiley – Does He Love You? Lyrics 18 years ago
Having been through a similiar situation, I've gotten sort of a different interpretation of the song than most of you guys.

I see it less as a story of a love affair, but more as a message that you should never settle because you feel like you're running out of time to fall in love.

"Get a real job
Keep the wind to your back and the sun on your face
All the immediate unknowns are better than knowing this tired and lonely fate. "
I interpret this as find yourself, freedom, and your place in the world before you settle down with someone. Because, knowing you'll always have someone is just second best to maybe possibly meeting the love of your life.

It's kind of like that old cliche quote "Don't find someone you can live with, find someone you can't live without."

Anyways, we all know what happens when you settle down with the wrong person.
They find someone new, and fall in love.
Ultimately causing a love affair.

But, we see the person who does the opposite of the wife, through the narrarator. She's not settling, and she's ready to face the unknown to find true love. Which, also leads to unhappiness, because she knows that this husband will never leave his wife for her.

But she sees experiencing love along with hoping, and wondering if he's going to leave his wife, better than wondering whether her husband actually loves her, as the wife does.

So, it comes down to two different philosophies of love.
Is it better to have truly loved and then lost, or to just have a steady mediocre relationship that's constant and will never go away.

Personally, I'm for the first.
Because, love is able to grow between any two people if you put in enough effort.
But, when you realllllllly fall in love. It's something special between the two people involved, and cannot be replicated.
Unfortunately the second one is much more heartbreaking.

Rise Against – Like The Angel Lyrics 19 years ago
This song has numerous weirdly coincidental and relative things to do with my situation right now.

I'll just say that i think it's about falling in love with someone who you can't really have a relationship with because of time, and distance. It's obviously extremely hard to keep a relationship going when you never get to see the person, and they're gone for a long time.

Bloc Party – Blue Light Lyrics 19 years ago
This is simply a song about love hurting.
Bluest light= an oxymoron.
Light is supposed to be warm and welcoming (like love) and the blue represents sadness and depression.
So, he falls in love in the beginning but then she leaves him and he's stuck loving her, but also feeling sad. Therfore, she is the bluest light.

Just my interpretation anyways.

Bloc Party – This Is Not a Competition Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the song is about someone in a relationship promising to help the other person no matter what, because they care about them. But then towards the end they run out of time and it's too late, because they've got to either get on with they're own life, or the person is so far beyond any help they coud offer.

Badly Drawn Boy – Year of The Rat Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know if this could possibly add any meaning to the song whatsoever, but i just thought it was an interesting thing that the year of the rat was 1984.
Of course it was also 1996...

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – First To Finish, Last To Start Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about young death.
The title "first to finish; last to start" basically is about being born young and dying young.
The lines "Rain falls you know it's got to rain. The sky lifts it up and lets it down again" Is, I think relating the cycle of water to life.
You know you're bound to die, as you know it's bound to rain.
But, the cycle keeps going, because there's always new life, as there's always a new death.
The line "when you meet me on the ledge, we'll all be singing out again" is i think relating to what comes after death, and how we're all united again. Also the line "i'm not afraid we'll meet another day" is about how we're all united in death.

The flame at the end is i think a symbol of life, and how if you live intensely, and very emotionally you're bound to die young, because you "expend your heart"

This is an amazing song, and i can't help but get goosebumps whenever i hear it, becuase of ted's singing.

Tsunami Bomb – I Bought You Lyrics 20 years ago
I really love this song, and like Fear said I can relate to this alot.

I agree with fear on what it's about too.
It's about seeing someone that you might be attracted to, or you just for some reason you think they're special, but you're kind of scared to go up and talk to them. So, you end up creating a perfect personality to match with the person who really could end up being nothing like what you imagine them to be.

Bloc Party – Pioneers Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's meaning is more general than a specific war or person.

I think it's about all the idealists in the world.

The title sums up the song very well, because pioneers are idealists. They're settlers who are hoping for a better future in a new place.

"If it can be broke then it can be fixed, if it can be fused then it can be split
It's all under control
If it can be lost then it can be won, if it can be touched then it can be turned
All you need is time"
Is basically the idealist's theroy that everything can be fixed; all you need is time, motivation, and will.

"We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?"
Is I think a reflection on a time when the song writer was an idealist, and how he made all these promises to change the world for the better, but he realizes now that he was hoping for too much.

"You said you were going to conquer new frontiers,
Go stick your bloody head in the jaws of the beast"
Is about how idealists are trying to accomplish all these huge tasks that are far too big for one single person to accomplish.

"I'm shaking hands with a hurricane"
I think is about how being an idealist is like trying to shake hands with a hurricane. Because a hurricane is so big and you're just one single person. You can't destroy every problem.

"Ambition, tearing out the heart of you
Carving lines into you
Dripping down the sides of you
We will not be the last."
Is about how much ambition idealists have to change the world, but in the end their dreams just get squashed by the world, and their hearts get torn out.
But still, it will keep going, and there will always be idealists in the world who want to change things.

Bloc Party – Little Thoughts Lyrics 20 years ago
I think it's about how age influences love.

The part where it goes "This world ain't just made of facts
Every half hour is a countdown" I think is about how the world is so obsessed with facts, and logical things that make sense, and how love (no matter what age you are) is not one of those things. Also that there's something more to life than facts, and that of course is love. So, it shouldn't matter what your age is; If its love, it's love. Numbers are just a way to count things and keep track of things.

The "I'll go back" part i think is about how he would go back in time if he could. I can't decide if he means go back in time so that they never met, or go back in time so that there is no age difference between them.

"If it's because of my age then you're a coward"
Is basically saying that age is a lame exscuse to break up with someone, and that if you do, it's because you're just scared of falling in love.
