Lou Reed – Video Violence Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is fascinating. On one hand Lou criticizes violence in media, while using incredibly vivid violent imagery to do so.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Do You Love Me? Pt. 2 Lyrics 9 years ago
Cave said that the smell of vanilla reminds him of the smell of semen. So that explains why the stranger's breath smells of vanilla.

Even 15 years later, every time I hear this song it leaves me speechless.

David Bowie – Strangers When We Meet Lyrics 9 years ago
To me, it's about somebody unlucky in love finding new love, but fears his past. He's happy she doesn't know what a fuckup he's been, but he still knows it, and it'll probably end up wrecking this relationship as well. That's probably why the music on the surface feels happy, but has a menacing undercurrent as well. The good times will only last so long, then comes the break up.

Willie Nelson – Pancho And Lefty Lyrics 9 years ago
I thought "they only let him slip away, out of kindness I suppose" was menat to be sarcastic. The federales knew the only thing they could do worse than punishing Lefty for killing Pancho was to let him live with himself. The line "they only let him hang around, out of kindness I suppose" is a darkly humorous pun, so I'd imagine this one would be as well.

Eleanor Friedberger – My Mistakes Lyrics 9 years ago
I love the line "why keep time traveling if it doesn't get better on the second time around?" Everybody keeps making the same stupid mistakes over and over again. And we keep seeing our friends make the same stupid mistakes, but we keep doing them anyway.

King Crimson – Ladies Of The Road Lyrics 9 years ago
Levi'd means she was wearing Levi blue jeans.

Ween – Flies On My Dick Lyrics 9 years ago
Hmmm, he's afraid he'll have to beat off because she won't give up the snizz? Actually, that kind of makes sense in a cracked Ween way...

Hüsker Dü – You're A Soldier Lyrics 10 years ago
Is it about Bob?

submissions
Lou Reed – Halloween Parade Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about how AIDS killed off a lot of Lou's friends

submissions
Entombed – Full Of Hell Lyrics 10 years ago
I didn't take it that literally. I always assumed it was about a mental breakdown, or, perhaps, crippling paranoia in general.

submissions
Grant Lee Buffalo – Rock of Ages Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about having a crisis, reaching out for God, but feeling God is not there.

submissions
Oasis – I Hope, I Think, I Know Lyrics 10 years ago
Heh, I have always heard "in the end the press means nothing" even though they printed "past" on the lyric sheet.

submissions
Blur – Trailerpark Lyrics 10 years ago
Supposedly Rick Rubin rejected it from being on Chef Aid.

And I like jordanmoore's take on the Rolling Stones line. I hadn't really thought about it, but it makes sense. Originally I pictured a small town boy who took his GF to a Stones concert and she ended up running away with the band. But I like the britpop rivalry angle as well.

submissions
Leonard Cohen – Sisters of Mercy Lyrics 10 years ago
StoneGiant was thinking what I was. Some women have a special gift for making you feel better about life, just by their presence. It's debatable whether or not Leonard bedded these girls. He is quite the ladies man, yet is (usually) coy about it in his lyrics. But that's what makes the song so special. Whether you find your solace through sex or a more spiritual plane, this song is for you. Basically it's about the joys of female companionship, no matter what form that might take.

submissions
Hüsker Dü – Pride Lyrics 10 years ago
Pride as in both a pride (family) of lions and gay pride?

submissions
Pavement – No Life Signed Her Lyrics 10 years ago
I always liked the "This guy's a fuckin' dick!" part

But I too hear "No life for gingers now." Always have. SM predicted the holy word of Eric Cartman.

submissions
Portastatic – San Andreas Lyrics 10 years ago
I always thought it was about long distance relationship with a girl in California. San Andreas is hit with an earthquake and he can't reach her.

Also, everybody needs to see the video. A shot-for-shot homage to Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime"

Guided by Voices – The Official Ironmen Rally Song Lyrics 11 years ago
Am I the only one who hears it as "to die alone"?

Japandroids – Wet Hair Lyrics 11 years ago
Ha, I thought it was "These girls are all that we can eat/We need a ride to bikini island"

submissions
Sunny Day Real Estate – Seven Lyrics 11 years ago
Heh, I hear that every time, too. That's how I usually sing when I sing along.

Also, I have always heard it as "the secret voice of God" even in '94 before Jeremy converted.

submissions
Bettie Serveert – Tom Boy Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it's about gender roles. Mousy women never make it to the top, yet a "tomboy" is able to rise above because she acts more "manly" (or how society thinks men should act).

submissions
Ween – Stroker Ace Lyrics 11 years ago
I love the reference to Dick Trickle.

submissions
The Stooges – Cock In My Pocket Lyrics 11 years ago
"taste your bloody today" So Ig wants to bone her when she's on the rag? Hey man, whatever floats your boat...

submissions
Katy Perry – Simple Lyrics 11 years ago
I have no idea why, but her vocal style reminds me a bit of Stephen Malkmus here. At least the first verse. And the lyrics are kind of random, like Pavement.

Man, I wish Columbia would have released that fist Katy album. If the rest was as good as this song it would have been a real gem.

submissions
Wild Swans – Bible Dreams Lyrics 11 years ago
Sounds like he's speaking from the POV of a soldier suffering from shell shock.

submissions
Big Star – Try Again Lyrics 11 years ago
From what I understand, Bell was raised Christian, which probably provided a lot of tensions with his drug problems and sexual orientation. I'd imagine the song is a literal plea to God.

Guided by Voices – Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox Lyrics 11 years ago
Holy shit, that segue between the two songs kicks my ass EVERY time. Even 14 years after hearing it the first time.

submissions
Pavement – Box Elder Lyrics 11 years ago
I've always heard "on a tray"

Also, as far as I can tell, there is no town called Box Elder in Missouri. I'm pretty sure SM meant to say MT since there is a town by that name in Montana. Of course, MO sounds better, but I must be pedantic.

Vampire Weekend – Diplomat's Son Lyrics 11 years ago
After the "He was gone line" Ezra sings "He was my son. It was '81" then repeats the "He was a diplomat's son" line. This part is missing from above and isn't printed on the lyric sheet. Or at least that's how I hear it.

Leonard Cohen – Don't Go Home with Your Hard-On Lyrics 11 years ago
I've given it a lot of thought and still can't come up with anything deep. I guess Leonard is allowed one shallow song after over a hundred deep ones.

Anyway, I assume it's written from the POV of Glenn Quagmire kind of guy. He doesn't have a loving wife at home to satisfy him sexual, emotionally and spiritually, so he has to go to the bars and find strangers to meet those needs. It fits in with the themes of infidelity and promiscuity present on Death of a Ladies Man.

I'm still not sure about the verses though. Why mention his father's trade, etc?

Catherine Wheel – Black Metallic Lyrics 11 years ago
Perhaps it's about a gyndroid?

The Posies – Ontario Lyrics 11 years ago
In part a mockery of Neil Young's Helpless, which talks about a town in Ontario, with "big birds flying across the sky"

Anybody know if they had a beef with Neil at this time or not?

The Dismemberment Plan – Soon To Be Ex-Quaker Lyrics 12 years ago
Many house cats are declawed (because those damn things are sharp and hurt). Yet it's also against nature, much like a quaker who fights. The Quaker religion forbids fighting and violence, so a quaker who uses violence (even when he is justified) is unnatural, like a cat without claws.

It's also kind of ironic, since a cat without his claws is rather pussified (for lack of better term). So is that to say a man who fights with violence is less of a man? That certainly goes against the expectations of manhood (at least in Western culture).

submissions
St. Vincent – Marry Me Lyrics 12 years ago
Hmmm, I never thought of the Mary and Joseph line that way. I assumed she was tweaking the orthodox Biblical account, but that would add a new dimension to the song. And "we'll do what married people do." Supposedly couples have sex a lot less once they're married. Supposedly.

submissions
Bob Seger – Night Moves Lyrics 12 years ago
I'd assume it's about his wang. And the fact it was "hardly renowned" probably means the song's character was either a virgin or very unexperienced when he first started hooking up with this girl.

submissions
St. Vincent – Marry Me Lyrics 12 years ago
I always thought this was about unrequited love. "You won't realize I'm gone" means John know she exists, ie - she could die and he'd never know it. Her voice sounds full of longing, but also sadness and loneliness.

submissions
The Rolling Stones – Star Star Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm pretty sure the line is "get their tongues beneath your hood" not "hook."

Sugar – Your favorite thing Lyrics 12 years ago
This song kind of borrows Blown A Wish by MBV.

Sonic Youth – Providence Lyrics 12 years ago
Does he really say "Claudius"? It sounds like "Watt here" to my ears.

submissions
The Submarines – You, Me & The Bourgeoisie Lyrics 12 years ago
I like her voice, but cripes, these lyrics are the worst load of shit since John Lennon's "Imagine."

submissions
Hüsker Dü – She's A Woman (And Now He Is A Man) Lyrics 12 years ago
This song always kind of confused me. Why is he now only a man? Is the "something her heart cannot forgive" homosexuality? Or is Grant's personal life clouding my judgment? Or is the line "Oh brother! Oh brother! I'm telling your sister. No way can I resist her" suggest he slept with her sister? That would also go well with the previous quoted line.

Velocity Girl – Crazy Town Lyrics 12 years ago
Well, the first line is still a mystery to me, but I'm pretty sure the rest of this is right. Is there a way I can replace these lyrics with this new version? The song IS very addictive and these lyrics are a bit more repetitive than I thought. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I go over all night(?) over here
Man if you weren't my sister
I could not fight it

I went walking around this crazy town
But all I found is the same old thing
I got my clue but it's not enough
If you think that's good just wait and see
I've got a few more words in my vocabulary
I went walking around
Through this crazy town

Words just strong enough to get my point through
Man if you weren't my sister, I'd be all over you

I went walking around this crazy town
But all I found is the same old thing
I got my clue but it's not enough
If you think that's good just wait and see
I've got a few more words in my vocabulary
I went walking around
Through this crazy town

I went walking around this crazy town
But all I found is the same old thing
I got my clue but it's not enough
If you think that's good just wait and see
I've got a few more words in my vocabulary
I went walking around
Through this crazy town

Pavement – Feed Them to the 5 Lions (Linden) Lyrics 12 years ago
I love the references to gambling. Gambling on high school football... decadence American style at its best.
