The Clientele – Losing Haringey Lyrics | 4 years ago |
@[reverberation:33474] i know it's been forever and you probably don't look at this account anymore but that was a damn beautiful interpretation. i think it makes a lot of sense, and turns what i thought was a depressing song into a cooly hopeful one. thank u |

Velocity Girl – Crazy Town Lyrics | 5 years ago |
such a bummer they mixed her vocals so low |
Bill Callahan – Rococo Zephyr Lyrics | 5 years ago |
i've listened to this song for years, and tonight is the first i sat down and just listened to the lyrics. this song is fucking heartbreaking and beautiful. i'm literally tearing up at even the phrase of 'rococo zephyr'. shit! |
Zammuto – Groan Man, Don't Cry Lyrics | 5 years ago |
@[Phantasman:27832] i like that! it fits well with everything else he's saying |
Beulah – Emma Blowgun's Last Stand Lyrics | 5 years ago |
i can't shake the thought the opening section (the part that sounds like some kind of bongos) is a sample of the song "Witchi-Tai-To" covered by Brewer & Shipley. it might be a coincidence since they don't line up perfectly but they sound reeeaallly close. kind of the way at the beginning of "Score from Augusta" they used the same sample Van Dyke Parks used in his song "Donovan's Colours". maybe i'm reaching, but that'd be pretty interesting if they sprinkled weird samples in songs. |
Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) Lyrics | 5 years ago |
@[Tomtomp:27317] beautifully put! |
Unrest – I Do Believe That You Are Blushing Lyrics | 7 years ago |

i just copy pasted. i'm a fraud |
Van Morrison – Fair Play Lyrics | 9 years ago |
i really hope this song isn't about a couple having inventive sex. it's definitely about walking. van morrison kinda loves singing about walking. other than that it just sounds like he's remembering walks he's had w/ someone, and singing lil phrases these two traded between each other 'geronimo' 'hi-ho silver' 'fair play to you'. i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that 'fair play to you' is something he and a friend of his would say to each other, can't remember why. and i'm assuming 'tit for tat and i love you for that' is him describing their relationship? like saying we give n take equally between each other, and i love you/us for being able to do that. iono. this is all sounding dumb now i just wanted to say this song punches me in the face in a good way and i hope its not just about kinky sex |
Grouper – Stuck Lyrics | 11 years ago |
these lyrics suck bring back the old ones! |
Zammuto – Groan Man, Don't Cry Lyrics | 11 years ago |
skipping the "wtf, this song's great why am i the 1st...", but still feeling it! this sunovagun and his puns/double-/quadruple-meanings. it makes me wary of trying to talk about what he means in any of his songs. so: grown men don't cry groan, man, don't cry groan-man/grown man, don't cry the narrator calls him "groan man" as a joke/insult, using it to say this person complains a lot. but i'm sure everyone here already knows that. this is a story about an adult male who is sad or tired about something (can i use "first world problem" here and not sound like a douche?) that the narrator doesn't think is that important, which i think is kind of a theme in some of these songs (i haven't given the album a thorough listen don't kill me). this person has it easier than others (who, though?) and still worries about inane (in the narrator's opinion) problems. he lets the past get to him, he worries about unnecessary things, maybe he's a little lazy. he's been living a pretty good life and he still complains. and the narrator judges him (maybe lovingly). "world's smallest violin" (humorous) A notional violin that plays tragic music for the afflicted; used in dismissive responses to oversensitive complaining. (wiki) i like how he uses the phrase in a new way, pretty much making a pataphor (look it up) of it. ", but it's revolting To watch you complaining at the lake," - i think the narrator took this person out to nature to try to get them to calm down, but still this person nags/complains. "The smallest little violin stuck in your eye, It makes you cry, Rivers made of fake." - and here's where it gets hairy. the narrator thinks this person is lying, is putting on a show. crying and not meaning it. personally that's kind of insulting cause pain is in the eye of the beholder, no? this guy's judging someone for feeling sad. though we've all been there on either end at some point, right? the chorus is the only thing that brings it back to feeling (em/sympathetic?) for "groan man". the narrator wants "groan man" to move on, to live life in the present. it feels almost like the narrator is breaking up with "groan man"... this isn't the first time i've been inclined to trace connections between the lyrics on this album and the fact that it's the first post-Books album of mr. zammuto's. fun wordplay, though, rite? |
Grouper – Stuck Lyrics | 11 years ago |
i think you hit the nail on the head. (seriously) |
Akron/Family – Italy Lyrics | 11 years ago |
. . .so maybe i was a little quick to jump to the whole death thing. he's probably leaving to/from italy and is waiting for evening, like TheSundanceKid said but yeah, then it gets all metaphysical and shit and maybe in his endless waiting "standing still's the sun", and he starts thinking about other major changes, like death. and the last part is his mind wandering around, thinking about dying and time and shit. i like that idea a lot better than the whole thing being about death. 2009-me needs to calm down. |
Yo La Tengo – Last Days of Disco Lyrics | 12 years ago |
anyone else think the title is a reference to the whit stillman movie? am i totes off and wrong? |
Soltero – bottomfeeder Lyrics | 13 years ago |
sort of don't understand the end, the part about the current. like what the heck, rite? whatevz though, this song is so nice |

Dirty Projectors – naked we made it Lyrics | 14 years ago |
we layed on the roof looked at stars 'til two and we talked about the news wasn't too much news so went down soon to the darkness of my room ahhh, and naked, we made it, us two and i loved it, i loved it, i loved it, i loved it (uh uh uh uh) (i'm pretty sure this is supposed to sound like a certain kind of grunting IF YOU GET MY MEANING) (uh uh uh uh) ahhh, and naked, we made it, us two and i loved it, i loved it, i loved it, i loved it now the moon's waning and the summers fade and you've e-mailed me oblique, oblique, milky transparency let it be the time that we were naked, we made it, us two and i loved it, i loved it, i loved it, i loved it i loved it, i loved it, i loved it, i loved it she loved it, i think she loved it i don't know, man, dude's just a jokester |
Dirty Projectors – Temecula Sunrise Lyrics | 14 years ago |
if this is true i'll be disappointed and just stick with my mis-heard "getting way wasted" |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Jennifer Lyrics | 14 years ago |
just sayin', but, i'm pretty sure it's "i bring jennifer yard rakes" instead of "yer brains" at the end of the first verse. cause, y'know, it fits better, with the rest of the song. and also, i think it's "and we dance in the leaves that go up to our knees", once again fitting in with the aforementioned "yard rake". |
Grizzly Bear – Merge Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"back, at the front of the lane/passing all those boys again" eh? |
Akron/Family – Italy Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's death, man! DEATH! srrsly.when he says he's leaving this evenin', he means he's gonna die! and when he says he's waiting for his time to come, and that he's "RRREEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDYYYYYY", that means he's ready TO DIE. why do you think he says he's ready with such vigor at the end? HUH |
Say Hi – Unless the Laker Game Was On Lyrics | 15 years ago |
naw, dood, it's just about how he and gurl watch tv a lot and he's jokingly saying he'd do anyting with her (watch anything she wanted to [and apparently she's a big 80's movie fan]), unless, of course, the laker game was on. (reference, anyone? EH?) |
Beat Happening – Tiger Trap Lyrics | 15 years ago |
well i mean the title, not the lyrics, those are pretty nice too, though. |
Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i pretty much skimmed through all this so i don't know if this has already been said, but i'm thinking it's just a cesspool pretty much. every time someone's down on highway 61 they're taking part in something shady or perverted or both, it just kind of seems like he's making a little joke of it. i know it's a golden highway of opportunity and all, and it has history and stuff, but maybe this is just one aspect of it, it's a road where anything goes, and apparently a lot of dirty shit happens along the way. |
Black Flag – Gimme Gimme Gimme Lyrics | 15 years ago |
goddamn the dirty projectors version of this is fucking amazing. FUCKING AMAZING. |
Animal Collective – Brother Sport Lyrics | 15 years ago |
he does, and i'm pretty sure bros is about matt too |
The Mountain Goats – Alphabetizing Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i really enjoy how some of john darnielle's songs are so specific (possibly personal?) that there's not much to debate about, meaning-wise. and since this is another one of the alpha couple songs, there's so much more brought into thinking about it, it has history and it's a completely different song from no children, but they go together! genius! that man is a gawd-dang genius! |
Beat Happening – Tiger Trap Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's supposed to be a calvin and hobbes reference. tiger trap, get it? |
Dr. Dog – Wake Up Lyrics | 15 years ago |
oh! artslut, is that a pun!? would-BE-atles! agghhhh! punnn! you clever thing you. by the way, the ending = best part, right? i mean, geez, it's so creepy. |
Mirah – Lone Star Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Xiu Xiu – F.T.W. Lyrics | 16 years ago |
FOR THE WIN! ;_; |
Unrest – I Do Believe That You Are Blushing Lyrics | 16 years ago |
that was some good bashin' you got in there. but are you seriously defending that butthole surfer up there? he called cherry cream on boring, ???? and honestly, abstract meanings are most of the time bullshit. you're basically making it mean whatever you want, as you just did in your comment. if you really want i can try to bash some meaning out of a mark robinson song, but i'm almost sure that whatever he says is exactly what he's trying to say. the sort of thought you promote though is a damn slippery slope, look at visual art, paintings and whatnot. i was wandering around a museum and i saw two completely black canvases in two different areas in the museum, and people took more than thirty seconds to stare at each one. i'm not saying unrest is the musical version of that, but i'm guessing you'd be one of "intellectuals" staring and analyzing the dartboard i saw hanging on a white wall yesterday. too deep for words. |
Islands – Volcanoes Lyrics | 16 years ago |
if the world doesn't end in the next week i'm going to be horribly disappointed and never listen to islands again. srrsly. |
The Velvet Underground – Countess from Hong Kong Lyrics | 16 years ago |
someone needs to cover this song, shit. |
Unrest – I Do Believe That You Are Blushing Lyrics | 16 years ago |
mark robinson doesn't cry. his lyrics have no meaning to them. "waking up to your eyes, endless over" doesn't make sense grammatically. it's good to see someone can still find meaning in meaningless things though, that's beautiful. |
The Walkmen – Christmas Party Lyrics | 16 years ago |
fag |
Peter And The Wolf – The Fall Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i read in a couple of interviews and i've come to stand strictly by the idea that it's about the end of modern civilization, and how once all of it's gone (technology, i mean)(although if technology were gone then we'd just start to build it right back up so this sort of thing is unrealistic, but whatever, it sounds cool) we'd go back to being hunter-gatherer's and all that ("now i hunt the buffalo"), and being pretty primitive, and how it would be beautiful. andrew bird has a very very similar song called "tables and chairs". i think i like them about equally. but yeah, going back to nature, man. that's like poetry. |
Page France – Jesus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
jesus christ, they're both conjunctions, rtb3, get over it, man. |
Animal Collective – Derek Lyrics | 16 years ago |
is it just me or should this song have just gone on person pitch? |
José González – Stay in the Shade Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i'm pretty sure he was just trying to find something that rhymes with "fade", and also to use the words "love" and "life " one sentence apart, in this song. |
The Walkmen – Christmas Party Lyrics | 16 years ago |
that part "and you're singing to me" gives me the nice kind of chills, so sweet. |
Fire Tongue Radio – Save Me Tom Cruise Lyrics | 16 years ago |
whoa, kurt vonnegut reference, like, so pretentious. jesus. you clearly missed the meaning of his last great work. gawd. |
Peter And The Wolf – Safe Travels Lyrics | 16 years ago |
hahaha, uganda. |
Ramona Cordova – Take Flight Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Yo La Tengo – Hanky Panky Nohow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
