Songmeanings should have a place where you can comment on albums as a whole, for bands like Brand New who I believe make albums to be listened to as albums. It might be true that, for instance, This song's about a boy and his brother playing hopskotch, this is about a guy and girl making up after a fight. But ultimately (and I'm only going off TDAG and Daisy, getting their other material soon) they are incredibly gifted musicians who learned how to knit inanimnate objects. Daisy is full of a references to a bride, trains and tracks, forests, fires and gasoline, drowning and bodies of water, seeds/earth, and beds, and if anyone thinks this is an accident you're selling this band short. If anyone wants to suggest this idea or knows what to do with it, I'd love to be able to read what everyone thinks on albums as a whole. |

OoO the irony.. Fair enough about saying there's no arguing (+lol, I think we need more of these here.) with me. I figure we are even since you began your post by asserting I don't know what I'm talking about. But I don't Want to elaborate on every little detail that makes up what I get from this album. If you want to hear me go into that detail, hit me up on aim man. |

| The dog thing just goes to show that like I said, I hadn't given it a thorough listen nor seen the cover in large detail to remember that it IS a freaking fox that look like it has rabies. A Sly Fox. I exit now. | |

Well as someone said to me today, the coolest thing about poetry and writing is the way it can be interpreted. Like I said, I didn't want to go into detail because I didn't want to either freak someoone out or piss someone off? I will say I don't hear that many syllables for the last line of the bridge in ATB (of a lake. connects with BOB, but, I'll zip it). But look please don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about; it's silly. It's asinine. As if I didn't spend two hours tonight on someone's stoop in the cold going over the past 11 months of my life and the spiritual awakening that actually oddly enough Was My Entire Day today. If I didn't know what I was talking about I wouldn't have already figured out Bed and why it's both "laid her on the bed/later on the bed/I don't ever wanna go to bed." I feel what I feel with conviction, and it's out of a sincere concern, that wouldn't have been here if it weren't for a whole buttload of "coincidences." But now that I think about it it really wasn't my place to post that shit here, am kinda torn about it. So Arter enjoy Brand New's Brand New album and Sound and connect the fireflies for yourself. :) |

Ziggy, wonderful stuff man. Took me back even. Like I was saying on Bought A Bride, I really don't WANT to go into intricate detail about how amazingly stitched together this album is-- it's practically a concept album--only because I hate the concept and I don't think others want to hear it or believe it. I've told two of my friends my thoughts in more detail, one is in recovery with me and gave me my new mantra (Everything Zen) these past 37 days clean (the other is not an addict but I relapsed on like 7 gulps of his 40. might as well plug the other kid, I'm breaking anonymity here but I don't think he would really care.. www.myspace.com/todayIfeelband we have an indie hip-hop side project with two songs down. Lucid Dream is with me, first time rapping but it's still cool. check 17, Horas and An Average Experience if you know what's good for you. This is also my aim s/n if anyone wants his albums tracklisting I just came up with last night minus our other song Tandem Stars since it's not up there, IM me. Gotta get back on topic. It's just cool when your boy makes some of your favorite music.) and they both keep saying I am stretching. Which reminds me my rap name/our side project is Gumby Jump Off. Anyway. I told my one friend... I love you and all but you're retarded for playing devil's advocate so much, like a fundamentalist Christian denying evolution. Daisy is the bride, "laid her on the bed, later on the bed (he will "nod out," which is why he never wants to go to bed) "lie to all your friends." I'm not even going to look up the lyrics to Vices, but I am going to buy the album when I mow my neighbor's lawn. At The Bottom there's a lake, Bought A Bride he is drowning in a kelp bed because he shot his boat with holes in a dream, sleeping on the stairwell. I mean it's just self-explanatory to me, ya know? And what it really shows is how the program of recovery, my sponsor and this friend of mine have changed me. And even if I wasn't a horrible addict, my bottom wasn't traditionally degrading, I still would never think this impulse to help people would happen. So, since I just came to on the concept of a higher power (homeostasis equilibrium karma and quantum physics, if I look out for "it" they'll look out for me) I am going to pray for them. I dunno, Ziggy went through all the feelings and events that could lead to a song like this (or Lucid Dream:), I have nothing new to add about the song. :) |

Daisy is a stand-in name for another kind of plant. I really don't want to convince anyone of this which is why I'm being sparse. I'm just scared man. I can't help but want to help people now that I've put all that shit down. But there is no arguing with me lol, the bride he bought and "laid on the bed" is named Daisy and the train Tracks they laid her down on is the Hammer he talks about later on in the song which is when she will become his bride, because before jails institutions and death you're just engaged. Fuck, man. |

I haven't even Daisy an honest listen yet because Vices kicked my ass so I just zoned out on the internet, but it's safe to say I understand it much too well. The album cover is a dog guarding the the trees that will make a forest, and make a bow (and arrow.) I don't want to go into detail about this song and other songs, but as someone who overdosed at the stroke of midnight going onto Christmas Eve last year, we should all be praying for Jesse. Vin wrote gasoline, right? What kinda Gasoline? Diesel. Is what something is known as where I'm from (New Jersey, twenty minutes away from Newark) http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/09/nj_has_distinction_of_having_s.html I commented on At The Bottom.. the words during the bridge are "I stole bricks from the dam almost every day, now I'm drowning in a flood I made// Well explain myself to me on the other side // I'll watch this. when I die" he's saying he will watch himself stealing "bricks" from the dam that are "drowning him in a kelp bed." I want to show Jesse there is A Better Way out there for anyone who's ever done what I know he is doing. |
|
| Brand New – At the Bottom Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
And for an unprecedented triple post, the words during that awesome bridge/breakdown/what have you were mostly gotten right by brandnewBricks. I think it's: I stole bricks from the dam almost every day Now I'm drowning in a flood I made Well, explain myself to me on the other side I'll watch this when I die Which is doing naughty things to my pleasure centers right now. Like... he wants to know what "himself" is going to be or will even mean after he's died. And the whole life flashing before your eyes thing, what he feels like he's going to see is just his own slow resignation from life. And a "brick" is about 500 dollars worth of heroin round my way. But I'd hope that's just me being a recovering addict (9 months clean, now I chair NA meetings... wild.) and not a clever and sly confession/plea for help hidden behind a play on words... |

What I said about the lake makes sense in tandem with the chorus, which is basically just saying if I asked you to assist my slow suicide I hope you would? Maybe I just listen to a lot of music that deals with death (like Why? - check 'em out!) but songs and lyrics like this don't depress me, they make me happy actually. A lot of this song seems to be saying life is just slow and dull and painful, life is walking to that lake and then swimming and drowning once the heavier, non-living object takes over and brings to you to its level. |
|
| Brand New – At the Bottom Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Jesus pudding I can't stop listening to this song. "and if I wanted to die before I got old I should've started some years ago digging that hole" This guy's a beast. He feels he's already gotten old. And the deer and dog part, I get a lotta different vibes from that. Death is fated? Death is the ultimate release? "And there's a lake, and at the bottom you'll find all our friends" I think is meant to invoke an image of walking into a lake with a slab of concrete or something. Song's been on repeat for a while, and it makes me think Daisy might be better than The Devil and God. |

| Why? – Pick Fights Lyrics | 16 years ago |

| Wolf Parade – I'll Believe in Anything Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I read through the first two pages before giving up to see if someone had posted this. But to me, "if i could take the fire out from the wire" evokes the image of a bomb, with the fire burning through the wire before an explosion. Someone way early on said (though they heard "water") it sounded like if he could get rid of his shyness, which was basically right on line with what I take from this. Maybe more to do with anxiety than just shyness, but yeah, thought I'd share that. | |
| cLOUDDEAD – Pop Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I would have never guessed what this song was about if I hadn't just thought of the title. It's about the sad state of commercialized pop music. "The wooden woman and her hollowing out" is the hollow, materialistic, sexualized image of women. "The wood man and his splintering self" is probably the self-aggrandizing, violent rapper full of braggadocio, if you take "splintering self" to mean that he gives others splinters, not that he is splintering himself. Both fake and contrived to pander to young people and pop culture's warped ideals for what they should look up to or aspire to be. "Elvis, what happened?" is pretty obvious. Then the cotton candy spun anyway you like is the way labels will pander to whatever is trendy at the time. Think of how quickly 98 degrees went all latin after Ricky Martin performed at the Grammy's and got popular. Don't ask me why I remember that. The use of the spatula image is interesting because of what it's used for, to scoop up mundane things out of a pile and flip them. "The label stapled a speaker to the back of a sheep's throat" I think is saying it doesn't matter which sheep (crappy pop artist) gets to hold the microphone because they're all the same. I'm really not sure about the second verse, but I love the fuck part. You can't curse on radio or mtv. I'm just starting to listen to cLOUDDEAD closely for the first time, and other than Dead Dogs Two I had thought a lot of their stuff might have been somewhat meaningless and they were having a laugh about it. So it's good to know that probably isn't the case, since all of Why's stuff at least is definitely deep. |

| Why? – These Few Presidents Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
i took "these few presidents, frowning in my pocket can persuade no god, to let me let you talk" to mean something with drugs. like they're in this house, rotting away with the smell of oven gas (fumes, smoke?) and the narrator is done with it, and doesn't want to hear anything from the other person because it's only going to be about trying to get him back to his old ways and spending money. this, however plausible, is me totally invoking my own situation and plugging them into these lyrics. |

Best Thing I Did This Year "That's easy, that's very easy for me. This is a little weird for me to say; I don't think I've ever said this to the press. I've been figure skating since I was a little kid. My parents put me in lessons when I was six years old, and I've been doing it every since. It's not like I'm that good at this point, but when I was 16, I actually tried out for the Olympics. I placed 332nd. | ok so i bought the kisses or stitches shirt at the show i went to, and i kinda like what i see it as meaning. taking into account the line from sanddollars - "half clotted blood vein sections, fossil dried up" you could say that yoni sees the therapeutic effects of drugs as "stitches." kisses would be, for once, kisses. which should he choose? | |

| Why? – Song of the Sad Assassin Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
i think i'm probably pretty biased with my interpretation of this song, because i always imagine that people in bands get laid a whole lot more than us common folk. i always have an ear out for references to or lyrics that could be inspired by groupies. that being said, to me this song is about yoni dealing with some sort of guilt for sleeping with fans. the first verse is just an elaborate metaphor for doing the dirty deed. just for other examples of this sort of conclusion, fall of mr. fifths - "maybe with one less lady -- is that a threat? oh i've stayed scarce this last year, yes. but be assured in unrest, i'm unavoidable like death" when the opportunity's there, he's going to occasionally indulge. fatalist palmistry "there's a moth flock in my gut growing (same prinicple, in unrest) a tug at my groin like tides trying to pull moon towards them, i can't ignore them" i can't put a finger on that billy the kid line. is he saying billy the kid is only remembered for a few things, like we're all gonna end up footnotes in history books? orr does he mean he did what he did with no regret or remorse or guilt, just did it and moved on? |

| Why? – Sanddollars Lyrics | 17 years ago |

i'm pretty sure this song is about coke/drugs and the greed that comes with that. there's a lot of references. "(half) clotted blood vein sections, (fast) fossil dried up" the coke is boosting his confidence. "the hound in night's brain learning dreams is untamed." god i love that line. my dog sandy is a really submissive, sweet yellow lab. but when she goes to sleep she twitches and snarls, i suppose working out her aggression in her dreams. the energy and power trip from a nice line is allowing him to do this while awake. "did you stay up all night" derf. "I wrote this one on chipped dead elephant ivory" unique description of cocaine. "I wanted to serve with hunger, but my gut split And the hunger man poured into war" coke makes you hungry, is quite mentally addictive, etc. etc. pretty sweet jam. |

| Why? – The Vowels, Pt. 2 Lyrics | 17 years ago |

menoseloso - i think that line is referring to his fans, those who listen to his music and maybe get a lot of therapeutic benefit from it and are really grateful for it, who think to themselves "wow yoni wolf helped save my life. thank the lord!" it's already known that yoni can get hella depressed and suicidal, but now with people expecting things from him and fawning over his work he's wondering if that's a credible idea. and he answers his own question - "i'm not." i also believe it's God, not raw |
|
| Why? – Bad Entropy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
the more i listen to and analyze yoni's lyrics the more i can't help but think nothing awesome about them are by accident... so with this song about entropy, the line "seagulls still ate shallow water fish"... i thought of how on digital clocks all numbers are just different parts of an '8' lit up. still 8. i'm just obsessing over my new favorite band. but all the ways in which entropy is actually displayed in the song is incredible |
