Lupe Fiasco – American Terrorist Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song and thought it was the catchiest song on the album with a decent, if slightly didactic and incomplete message. The vision of post 9-11 paranoia in the first verse is spot on, although who has really thought much about those anthrax letters since about 2002?

Yes, white Americans have mistreated blacks, Asians, Native-Americans, and Muslims...but Lupe leaves out Mexicans, Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, German-Americans, etc etc etc...

Sure, Italians, Germans, and the Irish have largely assimilated and been absorbed into the majority culture now so they don't provide such a poignant example as blacks or Native-Americans whose mistreatment continues most visibly, but has anyone seen an Asian-American panning gold or building a railroad in most of the last century? It is convenient for his thesis to be "White Americans have mistreated all nonwhites," but the truth of the matter is that white Americans have even mistreated other white Americans at times. I'm not a white supremicist or a Republican or anything that sinister, but a little more historical perspective would make his thesis less one-sided, that is, anti-white. I don't know why he didn't include Mexican-Americans as they are currently in the hot seat as far as newly immigrated unassimilated minorities go; maybe he just couldn't think of anything to rhyme with Mexican.

I enjoyed the theme of KKK members opening their eyes and realizing that they have more in common with financially oppressed minorities that they work so hard to hate. It would be nice if this country stratefied itself along economic lines instead of racial ones for a change!

Ludacris – The Potion Lyrics 19 years ago
"but still a bigshot plus i gotta big ("Cock")"

"I'm bout to feel aboard" should be "I'm bout to fill a void," as in what the music industry has been missing.

"like imma slip not," should be "like I'mma slipknot." I think he's talking about being hanged/lynched.

"kondike Bar"=Klondike Bar.

"Jump down turn around
Pick a bell of cotton
Jump down turn around
Pick a bell of hay
Oh Lordy pick a bell of cotton
Oh Lordy Pick a bell of hay"
In each case here, it should be bail of cotton/hay, not bell. He's talking about slavery, and cotten and hay have never been measured in "bells."

"bells like a bondsman" = "bails like a bondsman." (The bondsman is the person you pay your bail to in order to get out of prison. Somebody must have bells on the brain here!)

"life no different that ozar ("than ozar"? no, it's "THOSE ON") minimum wage
mo money but still locked in a similar cage either losers of tomorrow ("OR WE'RE WINNERS TODAY") Now just that and theres
really nothin missin to say but..."

"freaky-deaky yellow man ("AND I'M SAYIN' 'HELLO,' MAN") to all the lovely ladies that like to jiggle like Jell-O, man"
----------------------------
Now, all corrections aside, I think this is one of the most awesome Ludacris songs out there. It's also one of the few rap songs that I would consider introducing my parents to because it is talking about issues of race more than sex/drugs/violence.

Lesley Gore – It's My Party Lyrics 19 years ago
the prequel to "Judy's Turn to Cry." Heh. Lesley Gore knows how to weave a story beyond a single hit! Could both songs possibly be related to her other, "Maybe I know"?

Nelly Furtado – Maneater Lyrics 19 years ago
This song reminds me of '80s coke pop; I don't mean that in a bad way, actually. People are saying that Nelly Furtado has sold out with her new style and everything, but that might not be it.might just be that she is hearkening back to a shallower part of music history for her "new" sound. I think this song would be right at home as Elvira's theme in the movie Scarface.

And, yes, I agree that Nelly is being critical of this type of woman, and as someone said above, possibly taking a swipe at an ex who moved on to a "maneater."

DMX – Bloodline Anthem Lyrics 19 years ago
That's one of the oldest critiques of DMX, that he plays holy for like one song off an album, and then raps about immoral stuff the rest of the time...
Recognize that DMX is one of the most manic rappers around, and that by highlighting both sides, he is getting at the duality of human nature. The worst people in the world can usually justify what they do within their own moral frameworks, so you shouldn't be surprised that DMX genuinely believes that he is on god's side.

Most rappers talk about all the bad, hard stuff they've done without giving a moment's thought to the overriding moral implications meaning that they haven't really thought too hard about what they are saying, which means that they probably didn't even really do it at all. I'm not saying that DMX has killed as many people as he describes in some of his songs, or even necessarily anybody, but he's more "real" than most rappers from the past ten years. When Tupac and Biggie died, as far as I'm concerned, DMX picked up the torch and ran with it.

Bloodline Anthem annoyed me at first, I hadn't heard such a distortioned, 80s sounding hook from him yet, but I like it pretty well now.

Homophobia aside, "hard-headed, dick-ridin', grown-ass men" is hilarious, a great line.

Also, "I don't play with you cats like I used to cuz, well, I ain't your father," is an awesome line. All rappers insult other rappers, but few with as much finesse as DMX does here.

Good song. I didn't like the new DMX, post "...And Then There Was X," but it has started growing on me ever since about 04/05. I've got to get "Year of the Dog Again" ASAP.

Ludacris – Child of the Night Lyrics 19 years ago
Is he taking some swings at George "Dubya" Bush, do you all suppose, for using cocaine?

"...Curiosity killed the cat, why am I Curious George?
Gotta keep my nose up outta thangs that ain't none of my biz..."

"but a bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush."

I know Luda's had beef with Bill O'Reilly, I just don't know if it has extended to O'Reilly's hero, our "President-for-the-present" (as Eminem said on Mosh.)

If I'm reading these at all right, rap might be the newest political protest music, even if not every line is about politics.

DMX – Stop Being Greedy Lyrics 19 years ago
Wrong: "Grips is touchy, so don't make me wait "
I thought that the chorus line was
"Ribs is touching, so don't make me wait"
like he is starving...plus, that fits in better with the whole "stop being greedy or I'm going to steal your food to eat" motif.
Also, I don't think it is "If you curse, it gets worse."
I think it is "The curse gets worse as time goes by." (like, DMX is cursed with a bipolar personality exacerbated by drug use, not that his moral decline began when he started cussing.)
Excellent song about poverty, desperation, violence, and a personality that oscelates between night and day. DMX is one of the most psychologically profound rappers I've ever heard.

Sage Francis – Dance Monkey Lyrics 19 years ago
Shouldn't the beginning be "Right, I've got two left HOOVES?" like hes saying he's a goat or a devil or something? I don't think it is "hooks," listen closely and lemme know what you think...I could be wrong.

East Coast's response to Tupac's "Hit 'Em Up"
if I remember correctly. One of Biggie's tightest songs, imho, but it kind of had to be; can't fuck around when you're beefing with Tupac.

Martina Topley-Bird – Sandpaper Kisses Lyrics 19 years ago
Ditto, after that level in Indigo Prophecy, I got online, did some research, and discovered a musician that was well worth the time. It's too bad more video games don't use music to the same effect; I swear, that level played out just like a scene in a movie.

As far as this song goes, the lyrics are not perfect, although they are pretty good...but the delivery, the music, the ambience of the song are all great and make it addictive to listen to. I had to ween myself off of this song before I could move on to her other great songs.

LL Cool J – Luv U Better Lyrics 19 years ago
I think that there might be a mistake in the hook, but I'm not sure. They have it as:
"Baby smile today
Cuz I been on that journey always"
I thought that it was:
"Baby smile today
Cuz I've been imagining more ways
that I'm gon' love you better."

Baby Bash – Suga Suga Lyrics 20 years ago
Coke? No. Marijuana? Yes.
Evidence? "Fat sack," "lifted, "high-drows" (did they mean Hydro? As in Hydroponic?), "natural mood," "stickey-ickey," etc. This is all pot-speak, and has nothing to do with Coke.

Of course, the singer juxtaposes his love for pot with his love for a woman, so there is some ambiguity, but the gist of the song is that he loves his woman and that they both enjoy sharing pot!

Tricky – Makes Me Wanna Die Lyrics 20 years ago
When you guys talk about this song, are you discussing the Tricky original, or the Stereo MCs Weekend mix, which is loads better, imho? I first heard it during the credits of The Replacement Killers, and have loved it for the past five or so years, but that was the remix.

Great song. If its about marijuana, well, that makes it even more pertinent to my life probably! I hadn't thought of that meaning before, but then I hadn't googled the lyrics yet, either. I did think that I heard Hydroponic in there, though, but I wasn't yet sure...

Kanye West – School Spirit Lyrics 20 years ago
Does this song remind anybody else of Wyclef Jean's "Peace God"?
I like the beat and the overall sound of this song, and I'll admit that I couldn't get it out of my head today on campus, but the lyrics are just dumb.
From how he talks, you can't tell if Kanye is for or against the Greek system. The closest he gets to making a stand on the whole Greek issue is when he says, "And I ain't even pledge"...but before he extrapolates on why he didn't pledge, he goes off topic again with, "Crack my head on the steering wheel and I ain't even dead." Alright, Kanye, you were in a major car accident, we got that...but what does it have to do with the topic of this song? I suspect absolutely nothing.

This song doesn't really seem to express any school spirit, or really even any ironic co-opting of the concept of school spirit for subversive effect (as the two School Spirit skits would suggest there would be.)

As with much of Kanye's music, the sound is solid, but the rapping is poor. I hope he can fix that for his next album, but I'm not holding my breath.
