Neil Young – Cortez The Killer Lyrics 18 years ago
i feel as if neil young is likening himself to this image of cortez, with montezuma and the aztecs as a lost love. in his image, the people are beautiful, peaceful, spirited and intense. cortez comes and takes that away forever. it seems like he's feeling guilt for devastating a woman's life and hopes (in love)...

"i know she's living there,
and she loves me to this day.
i can't remember when
or how i lost my way.
he came dancing across the water.
cortez, cortez.
what a killer."

young often refers to his "darker side". perhaps it reigned as cortez.

i like narsil's interpretation, too. it's quite the opposite but works just as well, i think. that's the beauty in vague lyrics like many of built to spill's; people can get what they want from them and make them personal.

reminds me of the lines in car: "take the world apart and figure out how it works. don't let me know what you find out."

i interpret this as him seeing some true practically behind science. figuring it out, in this case light, takes all this work and science and thought. but he already knows how it works and it's affect on him. if there's bad (no) light, he can't read.

it's, no doubt, inspired by doug's then unborn son.

i see some tongue-in-cheek reference to the bitter hearted "indie rock" snobs that thrive on contempt for one another.

Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
the second part ("he seemed so unashamed") is autobiographical, i think. he touches on the fact that many of us try to attain the unattainable and wind up disappointing ourselves...feeling "so so".

i think the "we're special in...ways our mothers appreciate" is hardly a diss to anyone at all. an interview (sorry, no reference to give) stated that his girlfriend/wife said this to him once over the phone as a reassurance, likely because he was frustrated or feeling down, himself. so i don't see it as negative at all, but rather quite positive and hopeful. when the world's (and, often times, our own) love is so conditional, it's quite reassuring to know that one person's isn't...

but, despite the hope, there's a tinge of uneasiness. it can't be so easy. "all those holes make me nervous".

my take. but who knows. as he has said in interviews, most of his lyrics are pieced together and often times not much thought is put into them. the music comes first. but those words certainly have to come from somewhere...

"there's a feeling from ada to irene"

ada and irene are streets in boise. all the area in between (and then some) is part of the north end of boise -- the "liberal" portion, if you will. it's as close to a classic american neighborhood as boise has. modest, classic homes, front yards with kids running through sprinklers, uneven sidewalks running not beside the street, but along it...protected from the street by large, shady oak trees and grass patches.

compared to the urbanized and "californicated" rest of boise, it is quite a place. it's anything but a contrived, modern "gated community". it's what they mimic.
