Counting Crows – Rain King Lyrics 15 years ago
Kind of makes me think of the first season finale of "How I Met Your Mother." If you've seen the episode, you know what I'm talking about.

Weezer – Thought I Knew Lyrics 16 years ago
The others members of Weezer are a talented bunch. I've enjoyed the side projects of The Rentals, The Special Goodness, and the Space Twins quite thoroughly.

As for meaning... this song seems to be about a guy who was dumped by a girl. I think she might want to get back with him, but he's saying he won't because of the way he treated her.
I'm not positive though. It's late...

The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh, and one final thing- about the tinsel on the crown. Tinsel... it just looks pretty, it sparkles, but it has no substance to it. I have the feeling her new boyfriend might buy he lots of pretty things, but at the same time they're the sort of gifts that show he doesn't really know her.
At least, in the singers eyes.

The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics 16 years ago
I would disagree with the people who implied the girl was trying to get the guy jealous, but he never really liked her in the first place.
From the lyrics alone, I would agree that interpretation could be valid. But the way he sings "You told us of you new boyfriend" and "You berate, remember" and " the second "grey remains..." those lines are very passionate, not apathetic. I think she might be trying to get him jealous... but it's clearly working.

As for if she cheated with him or not... I could definetly see that.

The Magnetic Fields – Come Back From San Francisco Lyrics 16 years ago
While I liked your idea of needing those things to be noticed, I'm not sure that's what it means, but I don't think it's meaningless.
I think what the singer might be trying to impart is that, whatever other purposes the moon and trees may serve, without inspiring poetry, or creating the gentle and beautiful sound of wind blowing through branches, they are useless.

Anyway. I love the vocals on this song. She's a very good singer. I think the vocals, as much as the lyrics, if not more so, really make this song.

And of course, I like how Merritt isn't afraid to to have some bisexual implications in there.

Math And Physics Club – April Showers Lyrics 16 years ago
Like most of their songs, it's very cute. Just a cute song about a couple. She likes to walk in rain, and he doesn't mind either, since she seems to enjoy it so much. i think that's one of the only things in this song that's not obvious that should be pointed out. He doesn't like going out in the rain, and even thinks they should have stayed at home. However, I think this was only a passing thought he kept to himself. He doesn't care, as long as he's with her.

I'm not sure about the "meet me here this time next year" means. maybe they aren't a couple, maybe this is just a girl he met on vacation. Someone he doesn't see often, but wants to see her again next year? I dunno. Either way, it's a good song.

Neil Young – Harvest Moon Lyrics 16 years ago
While I realize it's silly to chastise someone for something they said almost a year ago...
Sveden, why did you come onto this song's page and say all that? You didn't even say why you didn't like the song, you just said "it's a lame, wussy song." I'm sorry, but acting like having feelings is lame doesn't make you cool. Stop. And what's with the list? I could probably name 50 songs I like better than this one too. But guess what, I didn't come into this or any other topic and do it, because it's obnoxious.

Anyway.

I think most other people got it. It sort of has an immediate meaning, I think. That he does just want to dance. He's been with this person a long time, I think, perhaps has even married them and had kids. But he's still in love with them, and still loves to dance.
It may have a longer term meaning as well. Certainly a Harvest Moon is red, which could indicate blood and death. However, if we're using the day as a metaphor for their life, wouldn't it make more sense for it to end when the sun goes down? And why would he want to dance just as the moon comes up? I'm not sure I'm with this theory.

The only other thought I might have is that he's visiting a old lover, someone he's not with but managed to stay on good terms with. The "when we were strangers..." verse all seems to be in past tense, including the "when we were lovers." This could mean that all that is in the past, yeah?
I'm not sure i really believe that, but I think it's worth considering.

Dave Matthews Band – Two Step Lyrics 16 years ago
Hey, my love, you came to me like
Wine comes to this mouth
Grown tired of water all the time
You quench my heart and you
Quench my mind

I'd like to draw attention to these lines again.
The metaphor is so well done here. I think it's one of the best stanzas/verses in the English language. It describes so well the way meeting a special person can feel. A shame it's been mostly overlooked.

Locksley – Up the Stairs Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, I think the meaning if this song is clear. The singer hooks up with a girl he doesn't know, and feels bad about it later. I suppose having the artificial closeness of casual sex just re-emphasized how lonely he was already feeling.

It seems to be implied she might have played him a little "Nobody winning, we're both being used," as such, whatever she wanted to talk about may have just be a ruse. Who knows?
Perhaps its a matter of perspective, and the singer is just being selfish. But I think he seems genuinely upset, imply that the song isn't just about trying to get into some hot girls pants.

Fountains of Wayne – Lost In Space Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm not sure confused is the right word. I think she's just different. Absent minded, perhaps. I suspect she daydreams a lot. But confused? No, I don't think she's confused. No more so than anyone else, anyway.
No, I think she's a pretty girl who just does things her own way, and tends to get lost in thought frequently. The singer does say she's a mess. This could be accurate, or it could be a matter of perception. Who knows?
In any case, I can very much relate to this song, because I tend to fall for that sort of girl.

The Coral – Dreaming Of You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think I would agree with the person who said it's about being in love for the first time, even though it's gone bad. The guy in the song, in the first verse, seems to feel weightless when he sees the girl. The heart skipping a beat is usually a sign of excitment. The excitement could be negative... perhaps he's actually about to break up with her? Who knows.

The second verse... I think this means that he's literally leaving. Going somewhere else. The first two lines imply that, when he comes to her, he's helpless. His hands are tied, and thus he can't set any limits for what he's willing to put up with. And so, to be free of her, he has to actually leave.

This is in contrast with the chorus, where he still cares for her greatly. This does make sense. Even if someone does something horrible to you, it does not erase any good things they may have done.

Marvelous 3 – You're So Yesterday Lyrics 16 years ago
I like how witty he is in this song. We don't see that was much in the other songs. Or, at least not the same sort we see in this song. The "What's she thinking/what's she drinking" bit, that cracked me up the first time I heard it. And of course, the "keep reading your book on how to give dirty looks" line is great as well.

Bodeans – Closer To Free Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think you can copyright song titles. Least, I read that somewhere. Look at how many songs there are called "Photograph." And there's at least two songs called "Love Me Do"

Anyway. Pretty simple, but very nice to hear. Just about being able to live your life how you want to.

Most poignant lines in the song for me.

Blake Babies – Out there Lyrics 16 years ago
I really like this song. I'm not sure what it's about, but I'll take a crack at it.

I would just guess that the girl in the song has grown tired of her hometown. She feels confined by it, and thinks that the people there are confined too. She seems to think that the person she's addressing- not sure if this is someone she has feelings for, or just a friend- could have a relationship if he (or she I guess) wanted to (You have a voice and you have a phone) but she doesn't. Likewise, the singer is in something of the same position, but every time she has the chance, she "turns her brain and body off," and screws it up.
The reason I think it might be about a crush is the "it's so hard to talk to you" line. The frusteration in the line- it's easily the most emotional one in the song- implies something more than friendship, I think.
So, both of them are stifled. I think she blame it on the town, because she always talks about leaving.
I'm not sure what the second line of the second verse means... however, it does make sense if she regrets trying to come back, and that was a mistake, because she was stifled again.
There are numerous references to leaving, and finding something more- whatever's "Out There," but by the end she seems to have grown more cynical, yet still wants to leave. However, she doesn't seem to think she's had any impact on the town, since she'll "leave it like she found it."

Semisonic – Across The Great Divide Lyrics 16 years ago
I am amused that the person before chose to insult someone for something they said five year ago.

Anyway, it's a pretty clear meaning, as many of their songs are. I like this one though, it's very pretty. I got the album this tracks is named for, total blind buy, and I think I love every song on it.

Ben Lee – Into The Dark Lyrics 16 years ago
Well I dunno, I think the breathing tornados lines might have been kind of a reference to the album, but actually has more to do with his state of mind at the time.
I admit I haven't heard it, but I did read the allmusic review. That was his most... not politcal album, but the one where he comes off as the most... aloof isn't quire the right word, but it gets the point across. he was telling people what to do.
Now he has calmed down. As someone else mentioned, the eye of the storm is the calmest part. I guess he still thinks the world is crazy around him, but he himself feel calm, since he met the girl.
I guess I was kind of restating what the guy said before me. oh well.

Elvis Costello – Alison Lyrics 17 years ago
To go on with the "she's not unhappy, he is," theory...

Several people have just recently brought up the "Sometimes I wish that i could stop you form talking when I hear the smiling thing that you say," line.
I prefer to look at this as him refusing to believe she's really happy. The silly things she's saying are that she loves her husband, and that she's happy. These things are in fact true, and the singer is just in denial.

Big Star – Thirteen Lyrics 17 years ago
I actually disagree with the older man/young girl thing. Everything about the song suggests more of an innocent, middle school crush sort of thing. The title, I think, means that's they're both thirteen. I don't think there's really anything perverse about the lyrics, save possibly one... and I actually think that line was only thrown in there cause it fit the rhyme scheme.
But getting tickets for the dance- the school dance I assumed, talking about music... I assumed the outlaw line was more wanting to be like Bonnie and Clyde, which also strikes me as a very middle school romantic fantasy.
Plus, as allmusic was so kind to point out, the way the tempo quickens in the third verse, to me, suggests a very thirteen year old kind of nervousness.
Plus, as the other guy said, Chilton says on the live CD it was written when he was 13. Though I don't have the CD to confirm this myself.

I like this song, actually. I don't know where I found this gem, a live recording of a Rivers Cuomo side project, but even though the quality leaves something to be desired... I like this song. Butch Walker – Alicia Amnesia Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, either she's acting like you doesn't remember him, or she actually. not because she has amensia, but because she's the kind of girl that doesn't remember guys like Butch, or at least the type of guy he's protraying himself as in this song.
Also, I know some lyrica similarities to Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus, where the opposite thing happens.

James – Just Like Fred Astaire Lyrics 17 years ago
It's a very sweet love song. A little unusual for James, but I think they get a kick out of being unpredictable.

Anyway, for those who don't know Fred Astaire was a dance, perhaps the best of the 20th century. Being with her makes him feel smooth, like Feed Astaire.

I also think most of the lines are sweet and somewhat amusing. Getting a temperature from being lovesick is, I think, very witty.

The Byrds – The World Turns All Around Her Lyrics 17 years ago
It almost sounds like this is a warning about this girl, from a current boyfriend to the next.

But it's an odd kind of warning. It's like she's so amazing that even if you break up with her, you'll still feel that, well, the world turns all around her. She's not the kind of girl that's easy to get over, no matter what the circumstances are.

The White Stripes – Black Math Lyrics 17 years ago
I think there's some truth to what a lot of people have said. Jack is, I think, recalling his high school days. And by doing so he is recalling the way school was taught, and how he didn't like it. The second verse especially seems to imply this, what with the "are you teaching the finger or the brain" and the "writing downs things I don't understand." Like others said, he was simply being taught to repeat information.
Problem is that doesn't always work in math. Often, you have to be able to really understand what you're doing.
So it really get good grades in the classes, he had to study to the point where he was teaching himself, maybe? Putting his love on ice might be an indication of the sacrifices me made to get by in school?
Just something I was thinking.

Paul Westerberg – Love You In The Fall Lyrics 17 years ago
Interesting that Westerberg's return to form should come from a children's album.

Well perhaps that's a bit harsh. I'm judging mainly off of Suicane Gratification and Eventually. Eventually had a few good songs, and I think SG is actually ok.

Anyway, this is a good song, sadder than what you'd think from a kids movie, but par for the course for Westerberg. Another song of a lost love, it seems. Or perhaps a love that never was?
Anyway, this song is a promise that he'll always love this person. He knows that he's not the first to love her, nor will he be the last.
Basic but good. I like it, even if it makes me sad. Reminds me of someone who's leaving in the fall.

Jack Johnson – We're Going to Be Friends (White Stripes cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
It's on the Curious George soundtrack, also a good album in and of itself.

It's hard to say which version of the song I like better. They aren't drastically different from each other.

Johnson definetly has a more peaceful voice though. White's has too much of an edge to it, even when he tries to soften it.
I guess it just doesn't seem right to say I like a cover better when the original is so good...

Blur – Resigned Lyrics 17 years ago
I can kind of relate to the first verse... you overanaylze something, or think about something too much, and it just gets you more and more angry about it.
And he seems to be upset about this person that can "fill his blank heart," but probably won't.

Big Star – Thirteen Lyrics 17 years ago
I really like this song. I didn't think I did, I think I thought it was cute, nice, and sweet, but somehow it's become my most listened to song.
The song is very self explanitory- middle school love. Junior High, for the folks that were around when this actually came out. It's sweet, simple, and very innocent.
I think that if you listen to "We're Gonne Be Friends" by the White Stripes, this song, and then "Stickshifts and Safetybelts" by CAKE, you have three very cute, sequential songs about a couple meet in elementary school and falling in love through middle and high school.

Ash – Let It Flow Lyrics 17 years ago
I accidentely hit enter... whoops.
Anyway, he was depressed, girl makes him feel better.
I think it's significant to point out that he doesn't even seem to care if he's ever with her. Or, he wants to be with her, but he's feeling better just for knowing her, and I like to think he would continue to do so, even if nothing happens between them.
Part of what confuses me is the "She'll never know how she blows my mind" line. I originally assumed this was meant to say that he was never going to tell her how he feels. But now I'm thinking it's more that he'll never be able to get across how exactly she makes him feel.
There are a few lines in there I really like, but they all go right along with that theme.

Butch Walker – Paid to Get Excited Lyrics 17 years ago
Being true to yourself is one of the main aspects of this song, but I'm going to point out some of the others. He touches on hypocracy.
"watch this hand give peace sign
while the other chokes a man"

More than just being about the gay marriage issue, it's pointing out the hyporacy in some of the more, shall I say rabid, practictioners of Christianity, whom are supposed to love everyone.

Moreover, I think he might be annoyed with the way some preachers seem to try to make God and Religion "cool"... though if he's annoyed at the youth for not paying attention if it's not cool, or at the preachers for using such tactics, I couldn't say.

I'd also like to point out that this song especially points out how much Butch has grown as a songwriter. Letters is a good album, yes, but most of the content isn't very deep. Granted this song isn't a 42 or anything, it still shows some more depth than most stuff on the last CD.
