Bush – Everything Zen Lyrics 13 years ago
Ah, Gavin Rosdale. He's like Kurt Cobain, only hot!

And while Kurt may have thought he was smart referencing Buddhism in his band's name, he didn't realize Gavin could easily copy him with the title of his first single.

This song is in every way an overly self-conscious mimmic of the Cobain approach:

- disjointed, non-linear, veiled meaning

- expression of boredom, anger, angst, and antiestablishment views

- excessive repetition

- Quirky phrases

You really have to either turn it off or throw up by the time this asshole starts repeating, "I don't believe that Elvis is dead."

"Another quirky, cliched phrase," indeed. Fuck Gavin. No doubt, he killed Kurt Cobain with this bush league garbage.

Marilyn Manson – The Beautiful People Lyrics 15 years ago
"It's as anatomic as the size of your steeple" is pretty obviously a phallic reference. The bigger your steeple, the bigger your dick sort of thing. You know, Christianity preaches love and equality, but they raise money to build these huge, elaborate churches in a display of machimo comparable to a guy bragging about his anotomical endowment.

Nirvana – School Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the "Won't you believe it. It's just my luck" and the "You're in high school again" lines are supposed to make the listener think he's talking about being in a social scene, and everything being shallow like high school, where you start as a freshman and get no respect and have to make friends with the right people to move up and all that.

But then he throws "No recess" in, and it kind of just destroys all that meaning. It's like he's complaining about highschool because you don't get recess like you do in grade school. It strings the listener along into thinking there's some deeper meaning and then intentionally kills it. That's how a lot of Nirvana songs seem to be written.

I think the guy who says it's about 9/11 is closer to the mark than anyone else.

Foo Fighters – I'll Stick Around Lyrics 15 years ago
You have to admit, if you just listen to the two refrain lines "I don't owe you anything" and "I'll stick around," it definitely sounds like he's talking about Kurt, and how he knew everybody would say that the Foo Fighters were a Nirvana spin-off band, but he didn't care because he, unlike Kurt, wasn't going to do the dumb rock star thing and die at the height of his fame.

I'm not saying that's what the song is about, but it was the first Foo Fighters single, and he was obviously trying to make a cynical, pissed off (ahem... Nirvana-esque) song, and he knew what people would think when they heard him scream, "I don't owe you anything" and "I'll stick around."

Nirvana – Sound of Dentage Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is funny as hell. I especially like when he says, "Why is this happening to me? WHY IS THIS REAL?!?!?"

I quote that all the time now. Like, if somebody's complaining about something, I'll yell, "WHY IS THIS REALLLLL???"

Weezer – Across The Sea Lyrics 17 years ago
Rivers said the song was about masturbating to the girl's picture. When the song gets really slow, and he talks about shaving his head and trying to be a monk and assuring his mom he's a good little boy, it reflects the guilt he feels after committing the act.

That part makes the song a lot more telling. Like, maybe he's this lonely, awkward guy who can't get a girlfriend in real life even though he's got teenagers in Japan writing him fan letters. Or maybe he just really gets off on how absurd and ridiculous and disgusting it is to fawn over a random Japanese fan who sends him a picture.

Soundgarden – Spoonman Lyrics 17 years ago
Man, I've heard the thing about this song being written about the guy who plays spoons in Seattle, but that's not what I got out of the song.

Also, I can see why people would think it was about heroin, since junkies usually cook it up in a spoon before shooting up. But that's not what the song means to me either.

I always thought this song was about a girl the narrator is trying to have sex with, but when they get to bed, all she wants to do is cuddle. You know, like, "spooning" is cuddling after sex. She's like, "Let's just spoon. It will be just as good." And he's sarcastically envisioning himself as THE SUPER HERO SPOONMAN WHO DOESN'T NEED TO HAVE SEX!!!!

But what he's really thinking is "Come on, will I get off? Come on, will I get off? COME ON, WILL I GET OFF?" Those lyrics are absent from this site's interpretation for some reason.

There are a couple other parts that suggest this like, "Come together with your hands." Maybe the girl finds a compromise that they can masturbate together.

And he's upset because all his friends, "Beat the rhythm with their bones" which is what you do when you have sex.

Admittedly, there are many parts of the lyrics that make no sense with this interpretation, like, "All my friends are brown and red", but I'm still very surprised that nobody else thought of this.

Nirvana – Blew Lyrics 18 years ago
Am I the only person who thinks this is one of the worst songs Nirvana ever released?

I mean, the "Here is another word that rhymes with shame" line is pretty clever, but musically, this song sounds like a lame Alice in Chains rip off.

When they play it live, Kurt Cobain sings it like he's sort of disgusted because he realizes he wrote a song that's such a buch of cockrcock bullshit.

TV on the Radio – Dreams Lyrics 18 years ago
He's pissed at somebody in this song. All his dreams are over cause he's an asshole and ruins everything for himself and he's too stupid to realize it. The best part is, "leave your tread mill power trip behind." Cause, like, if you're on a treadmill, you keep walking, but you don't get anywhere, and that's where his power trip is getting him.

Also, "It's best that your so so blind because your heart can't grieve what your eyes won't see." Pretty amazing.

What? That's the only comment?

I always thought this was about his friend who got offed by the government or something. "They said it was suicide, but I know better."

With lyrics as specific as that, it has to mean something! Not just your standard teen angst bullshit, anyway.

Whoever said this not quotable...

"I wanna see their faces turn to backs of heads and slowly get smaller."

This is probably my favorite line that I've ever heard in a song.

Also, to whoever said, "I want you to do me what to show" was a cool line because he inverts the words, if you listen really carefully, he does it in the line before that to.

"I wanna think what I should know."

Think about it.

Built to Spill – Else Lyrics 18 years ago
On a related not, more Built to Spill songs are about drugs than people seem to realize. I saw them live one time when I was on acid, and Doug Martsch looked like he was on about ten times as much of it as I was.

Built to Spill – Else Lyrics 18 years ago
I read an interview where Doug Martsch said he wrote this song for his friend that had a drug problem. "Where you'll find the confidence not to continue" is about not continuing doing drugs. Then he added, "Or I hope that's what it means" because it was in the middle of one of his retarded rants about his songs not meaning anything.

The whole song becomes pretty obvious once you know it's about drugs:

"Worthless tries at finding something else."

"Your body breaks. Your needs consume you forever."

Come on, who hasn't been there?

Elliott Smith – Can't Make a Sound Lyrics 18 years ago
Mr. Smith has suddenly become very depressed, to the point where he cannot talk. He's so depressed, he considers it a good thing because he figures everything he says is stupid anyway. "The hero killed the clown."

He feels all of his social interactions consist of him cheaply toying with everybody until he frustrates them enough to alienate himself "Spinning the world like a toy top. Till there's a ghost in every town."

Also, the SPINNING THE WORLD thing also serves as a double entendred drug reference when he says, "Eyes locked and shining. Can't you tell me what's happening?" Perhaps his drug use was what caused him to deal with others so thoughtlessly.

Finally, in a last ditch effort to justify his crippling depression, he decides the only way to actually feel respect in life is to subvert within himself. That way, he can't disrespect others and nobody can in turn disrespect him. He can always feel the powerful bliss of being a world within a world without anybody cynically making fun of such a narcisistic idea.

The Beatles – Because Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is one of the most moving songs about drug addiction ever written.

When the Beatles referred to being "turned on", it usually referred to a desire to take drugs. The phrase has taken on a sexual overtone since those times.

However, the three stages of a single instance of drug use, the time before, when one is struck by the temptation, the actual high, and the comedown are chronicled in this song. Each part of the experience cleverly played into an earthly or astral metaphor, which symbolizes the inevibilaty of the experience.

Because the world is round it turns. But it also turns him on to the idea of taking drugs. (What could be a trippier thing to think about while stoned, then the earth actually being a massive sphere, no matter how flat the ground looks from out POV).

And once he has taken the drug, his mind is high, so the high wind blows it. Also, saying something "blows my mind" was a common phrase among stoners in the sixties (as we all know).

Then the come down. The sky is blue, it makes him cry.

All the actual emotions he feels in the song are the result of his addiction, but he sees his addiction as as much a fact of life as the sky being blue, the wind blowing high, and the earth being round.

Elliott Smith – Miss Misery Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with acm. "Miss Misery" is his depression. He's felt depressed for so long that he begins to take comfort in it, and when he actually feels good for a little while, he knows that depression is lurking at the corner. So he compares his misery to a girl he has an ongoing relationship with. A girl that he doesn't want around, but then when she gets there, he just lays back and accepts her.

"You had plans for both of us that involved a trip out of town, to a place I've seen in a magazine that you left lying around."

I always thought this part was about suicide. The trip out of town meaning leaving the world. And it was her magazine, so it was Miss Misery's idea for him to do it.
