| Feist – My Moon My Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
okay, so these all might be the craziest interpretations of songs i've ever heard. and before you all get offended i didn't say you were wrong, i could just picture you all sitting around like "ooh, yeah, i'm digging this bum sex song" or like "sing it feist, way to express your painful menstrual cycles." i dunno, it just sounds too pretty to me. kinda jazzy and sweet. i'd guess it's about a relationship with an unreliable guy. but hell, it could be about recycling for all i know. |
| Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"who's going to watch you die?" i think is the part the stirs me most. because really, they're posing the question to you. the rest is all their stuff, but that's the point when you have to think about your own life. god, this song is beautiful. |
| We Are the Fury – Venus Lyrics | 18 years ago |
can't can't can't get this song out of my head. apparently about a secret love affair in the continental with a 19 year old. sure the story's not great, but god, i love this song. it made me fall in love with this band. "my hotel room comes equipped with a very nice bedroom" not exactly poetry, but damn catchy |
| We Are the Fury – Close Your Eyes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
ok, so i'm sorry, but i don't know what this song means, but i do get that it's beautiful and painful. about a relationship where maybe communication "but you never read at all", and possibly drugs "i saw you from the floor", were a problem. haven't figured out "don't close your eyes cause you might need them now" means. maybe he did throw himself into the ocean and now she'll need to see him, to identify the body. that finally she'll pay attention, when it's already too late. (it all sounds really dramatic, but there's that line "i rose up from a dream to a nightmare from a scene of a motion picture" that makes me think it's supposed to be really melodramatic.) that's just my take. what? not more posts? this is a quality song. wow. |
| Hellogoodbye – Touchdown Turnaround (Don't Give Up On Me) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
okay, so i'm really confused by jkapprentice's thing. where'd the slut thing come from when i think it's got major sports motif leaking everywhere? um, i think it's about how he's in love with this super-jock guy, you know the one, he who plays all sports, wins all sports and is loved by everyone. apparently he beat him in little league and maybe they had some weird relationship thing, or maybe it was all in his head (the "i never knew you" part would make that make sense, but maybe they just slept together) so then, after they're together, the uber-jock changes around his friends. he's different (touchdown turnaround translates to him making touchdowns, thus turning himself around into a different person, peer pressure-ish). i dunno, this is just my take. and it's probably wrong. on another note, am i the only one here who has not personally hung out with the band and formed some kind of opinion of how big of assholes they are? i'm just saying. |
| Cute Is What We Aim For – The Curse of Curves Lyrics | 18 years ago |
okay, so the "We All have teeth that can bite underneath To where the reality grows Yeah, that's where mine go" lines kinda make sense to me. because i see it as he's a smart, deep boy who's meant to write, but this curvy girl is shallow and doesn't seem to care that he's in love with her personality. she doesn't notice him, because she's shallow. (the "But it's so hard when you're shallow as a shower" part seems to be said to either the girl or general public to me) so he wants someone "provocative and talkative" but he's heard that "with skin you'll win" so he seems really sad at the end of the song to me (and you can hear him saying "I want someone" in between the "bone structure" part, because he's almost lovesick over this curvy girl.) i think this fits. the "we go where the money goes" part makes sense to me too because shallow kids go for good clothes and stuff, so shallow isn't just how you look but also how you dress and how much money you have, and we all want that, we all want "provocative and talkative" but it's hard because good looking people are so.....good looking. that's why it ends sadly with "with skin you'll win" because people are shallow. he's slightly shallow. the "teeth that bite underneath" means we can be deep, and we can be not shallow, to reality, and that's where he is, in the land of the non-shallow. (so i'm really sorry, i kind of rambled, and that may or may not make sense. but kind of in conclusion, the world is mostly shallow, and he can be but mostly he's deep and good at words, so he can't be with her, even though he wants to, because he's "where the reality grows" while she's "on the gossip team". sorry, i just can't help but type for miles, i love this song. |

| of Montreal – Art Snob Solutions Lyrics | 18 years ago |
thank you, sieraM. do you all not get that it's not some pissing contest of big brains to track down every obscure reference in the song? i'll say it simply: it's supposed to be funny. it's making fun of you. that's right, all of you who shouted out "I KNEW IT! I KNEW APOLLINAIRE AND KANDINSKY! I KNEW IT FIRST!" like a bunch of five year olds trying to snatch the last cookie were just displaying the exact annoying-as-hell behavior of art snobs that's being satired. maybe ever think that accusing those who are uninformed about your interests as being blundering idiots who can't tie their shoes just makes them hate you, not respect you? ever think there's maybe a better way to inform the public without that nose jerking into the air, a smirk on your face, and that tiny inner voice saying "oh god, i am so much better than them"? maybe actually listen to the song. stop trying to use obscure references to validate your own intelligence. it's music. listen to it. |
| Eve 6 – Here's To The Night Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i just think it's amazing that most people who posted here have some kind of deep emotional connection to this song. it has meaning and is important to most of the people it reaches. not many songs can claim that. |
| of Montreal – Requiem for O.M.M.2 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this is like the instantly classic sounding post-break-up song, and you've all summed up that part already. so, isn't vestiges the most delicious word you've ever heard? vestiges. go ahead, say it out loud a couple times. say it in a sentence. vestiges. (okay, i'm crazy, but seriously.....vestiges....) |
| The Killers – Smile Like You Mean It Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i just love the phrase "smile like you mean it" it reminds me of dunbar, with "we wear the mask" because to me this means that you don't mean it, but you have to put on the show. it's heartbreaking to look back and think of everything you'll never do again. you've got to be a person though, a functioning real-living person. so you wear the mask and put on the smile. i love this song, and when i'm feeling bad, it does make me smile, even if it's smirking (trust me, there's a difference). |
| Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics | 19 years ago |
beautiful. this is song is delicious, and morbid and lovely and sweet and a litany of a million other things that death cab usually is. i love it. if it was legal, i'd marry it. |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Passenger Seat Lyrics | 19 years ago |
just another among the throngs to come and say.................wow. "with my feet on the dash the world doesn't matter." conjures images anybody knows. hell, if you've been in a car at night you get it. it's beautiful. it's so damn beautiful, it's almost sad. |
| The Verve – A Northern Soul Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| okay, i've never heard this, but the title reminds me of the beatles. because they had "a northern song" and "rubber soul". i'm assuming, since it's the verve, that it doesn't sound like the beatles, but it just reminds me, title-wise of them. | |
| The Verve – Sonnet Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| this song is gorgeous. and sounds like a sonnet would be if i had to guess what one would sound like to music, which kinda makes the "don't sound like no sonnet" a bit ironic. | |
| Fatboy Slim – Wonderful Night Lyrics | 19 years ago |
okay, so i originally heard this as a snipet on a target (or something) commercial, but now i'm in love. i mean, allusions all over. and scienc-y stuff. like epicenter and centrifugal, and then a Dave Beckham thing. It's a long, smart, killer song. i think this is so caught in my brain that it's starting to hurt. but hey, who doesn't love moderate masochism? |
| The Verve – This Is Music Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i .do. love this song. and it's really applicable to any art thing really, that you fall in love with it, that it's your life. also, i can relate, the whole being on my shelf too long and how's the world gonna take me bit. this is really one of the verve's best, in my opinion. |
| The Monkees – I'm A Believer Lyrics | 19 years ago |
that is sad that no body cares or remembers...unless it was in a new movie. wow. anyway, this is a crazy cheery song that always makes me think of tiaras and clouds. (dunno why, but whatever) |
| The Clash – Spanish Bombs Lyrics | 19 years ago |
sounds like it's about Spanish Civil war, as most of you have already said (thanks for the recap on the history, by the way) Anyway, i just love it. Come on... British boys singing Spanish gets me every time. |
| Franz Ferdinand – Darts Of Pleasure Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Personally i think it's about the power of words. It sounds like it's about drugs and sex because of the connotation of the words they used to make it like an extended metaphor. Ture, it's very poetic. Love how they crafted it. |
| Franz Ferdinand – Darts Of Pleasure Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Personally i think it's talking about the power of words. It sounds like it's about drugs and sex because of the sort of metaphor-ish connotation to most of the words. True, it's really poetic. Love how they crafted it. |
| John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Wow. What else to say? and even if you don't agree with every word in the song it's quite provoking. if it wasn't, would there be so many posts here? would there be so many people who made the online treck here to share with others? Just, i don't know, wow. |
| The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Okay, so by now everyone's already said the meaning like a billion different ways, so i won't do that again. Is it just me, or does the word "star" sound like "store" when they say it? That had me confused for a really long time. Now it just makes me laugh. |
| The Vapors – Turning Japanese Lyrics | 19 years ago |
is anyone else really creeped out by the "I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well " part. Sorry, but that's just sick. Besides that, one killer one-hit-wonder. |
| The Beatles – Love Me Do Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Wow JosephWolf. See, at first i thought you were just some jerk who was going to taunt me about not knowing everyone who ever sang anything. But it turns out you're incredibly helpful. It was the Stones playing with Muddy Waters that my dad was thinking of. You may just be the most awesome wellspring of useful information. Thanks. |
| The Clash – Rudie Can't Fail Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| are these definetely the lyrics? I haven't looked them up, the second line in the second stanza (posted as "Like the doctor who was born for a purpose") always sounded like "like a dog who's spawn for a purpose". The dog thing just seems to make more sense....not that the clash was ever renowned for its making-sense-skill. | |
| The Clash – Hateful Lyrics | 20 years ago |
It's clearly about drugs, but might be one of the happiest-sounding-if-you-don't-listen-to-the-lyrics songs i've ever heard. It does mention the downsides, but the speaker being a user, they don't even care that bad stuff happens. Seems like it's mocking it. |
| The Kinks – You Really Got Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| How are there not more posts? How can you not hear this and be totally overwhelmed with the beat? Do people really have such bad taste today that they don't know The Kinks? | |
| She Wants Revenge – Sister Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I think it's about a nun too. I think the nun is actually questioning her faith, so she's sleeping with this guy. When she says "you can hurt me do whatever you like" i don't think she's talking to the guy, i think she's talking to God. I think she's believing that God isn't real, and is proving it. She's sleeping with guys and tells God he can hurt her or do whatever he likes. Whatever it means, this song is amazing. Dark beat and killer lyrics. |
| The Doors – Wild Child Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Wow, octopuseyes, that's a killer theory. Probably one of the only plausible meanings of that ever-elusive last line. Just felt you needed a well-deserved thank you, amazing homework skills. |
| The Doors – The Crystal Ship Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This song is beautiful. I've always thought "your gentle rain" was the tears caused by the bright days' pain. Maybe (this is just what i get, more of a feeling from the song than actual lyrics) but maybe it's Jim & one the many girls he was with, a girl who's broken and he wants to kiss her because it'll help her get away from her pain (and he wants to be enclosed in her tears, feel that pain) but he has to leave, (on the crystal ship, maybe the band, maybe fate, maybe time) and he knows she can't get away from her pain, but he can. This was mostly rambling and if, any day soon i'm carted off in a straightjacket, i'm sure no one who read this will be surprised. |
| The Rolling Stones – Get Off Of My Cloud Lyrics | 20 years ago |
They just spit out the words, and that makes it the killer song it is. --please, Overlord and ShadowStalker, tell me you're kidding-- |
| Franz Ferdinand – The Dark of the Matinee Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I think the_music_nazi got it just right. It's one of the best on the album. For some reason Matinee is just a really fun word to listen to. |
| The Doors – Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
It's awesome. Staggering and drunken it sucks you in. I love it. |
| Ringside – Struggle Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Okay, i get the "internal struggle" bit, but where's all this athlete part? Have you taken Hollywood Bowl out of control all over the song? What about Elvis? Sounds to me a bit like a kid who's thinking he doesn't belong in his family ("milk the mailboy", "make sense of the mess") and is struggling with being in a family he doesn't want "I just want to free myself - but it's a struggle I just want to stay in bed I just want to be myself - but it's a struggle" The whole bed=womb thing is a good interpretation though. |
| Save Ferris – Come On Eileen (Dexy's Midnight Runners cover) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This cover is way better than the original (one of the few that is). The meaning's obvious and if we have to discuss, someone's retarded. Fun to dance to. |
| The Beatles – Love Me Do Lyrics | 20 years ago |
No, sorry, i don't know who Muddy Waters is..... But, did he play it? (obviously you know this guy, so maybe you can tell me) |
| Modest Mouse – Black Cadillacs Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| It gets me every time the way they play with the sounds of words, you know? It's sort of poetic to not just plug words in for a message, but for the noise they make. Like, just say "black cadillacs" a couple times and you'll know what i mean. They do it with Satin in a Coffin too. I just love it. | |
| The Doors – Five to One Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Morrison was the poet of his time. This song, so rebellious, captured the struggle, as most Doors songs do. His voice his beautiful and the song is has an addictive, throbbing beat. I love it. |
| Modest Mouse – Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics | 20 years ago |
*Disclaimer*Okay, i didn't read all the previous, like, gazillion posts so i'm really sorry if i repeat. This song is sad and angry and accepting at the same time and it seems like that'd be confusing, but it's really understandable listening to the song. Seems to be obviously about death, whose i'm not sure. Just a beautiful song, i'm no harcore Modest Mouse fan, just stumbled upon it and was in awe. It's great a band can do that. |
| The Rolling Stones – If You Can't Rock Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
True, not great, but good because, well, it's the Stones. The shrieks at the end of certain words knock me out. Pretty images too. "You lovely ladies in your leather and lace, a thousand lips I would love to taste" |
| The Rolling Stones – Ain't Too Proud To Beg Lyrics | 20 years ago |
No, it's not bad at all. Kind of weird and sloppy, but it gets the point of 'no pride' across. |
| The Doors – Wishful Sinful Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Sure, Jim may have not been ever so happy about singing it, granted, but that doesn't deter the beautiful, "crystal" sound the song has. I do agree, it's positively beautiful. "Wishful, sinful, wicked you Can't escape the blue" |
| The Doors – Twentieth Century Fox Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Such a beat and trick lyrics and just, so, wow. But maybe i'm just in incredible awe of anything the Doors did. Either way, i love love love this song and it won't get out of my head. "But she's no drag just watch the way she walks" |
| The Doors – The Wasp (Texas Radio and the Big Beat) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This is a killer example of the beauty in Jim's poetic lyrics. They can't say he wasn't a poet if they've heard this. Inspiring. Captivating. There are no words. "I'll tell you this No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn" |
| The Doors – Wild Child Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I don't know what it's about, but i love love love it. I thought it was "fire licks" instead of "pirate prince" I dunno, it always sounded kind of tribal to me. |
| Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Sorry if i'm repeating anyone, i couldn't read all of the billion previous posts::: This is a beautiful song, and it's so pretty because of the tragedy it's about. the tragedy that people have to turn to drugs to feel numb to the pains of life. I think that's why it's still so great. "Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying" |
| The Doors – Hello, I Love You Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Hmm, that explains why it reminds me of the Kinks. Good to know i haven't completely lost it. I've no idea why Jim wrote this, but that doesn't matter, it is terribly catchy. We all sort of have that feeling sometimes, that there is someone so amazing but they don't even know us or notice us. Speaks to the masses, which is a Doors trait. "Do you think you'll be the guy To make the queen of the angels sigh?" |
| Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I. Love. This. Song. It's so...danceable (i know it's not a word, but that's the only way to describe it) The beat is crazy addictive. I could listen to this for an hour straight. |
| Cursive – Driftwood: A Fairy Tale Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I love this song. It's so simple and sweet, but sad. I love how it's about a fairytale, very rare. "She knew about those wooden boys they take empty love to fill the void" Beautiful. |
| Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This may just be Pink Floyd's best song and is probably on my top 20. "And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" I always thought it said 'morgue' instead of 'war', but maybe that's just me & my hearing impairment. I love this song. Meaning doesn't matter, only how beautiful it is. |
