Cold sore superstar,
He knows how you snore right where you are

of Montreal – Women's Studies Victims Lyrics 14 years ago
The mention of Germaine Greer is interesting, given her awful opinion of trans-gendered women, a subject near and dear to this album.

Minus the Bear – Get Me Naked 2: Electric Boogaloo Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song a lot, but the title is so embarrassing. All of the titles on Highly Refined Pirates are pretty bad, trying-to-hard jokes that aren't anywhere near funny, and it's sad because otherwise it's a really great album.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Goodbye to Mother and the Cove Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm still wondering what the words in the background are at about the middle of the two word lines. Beautiful song, though.

This is the most romantic song that has ever been written.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Satan Said Dance Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, it's pretty literal. Imagine getting to hell and instead of finding it some loathsome torture chamber, it turns out just to be a dance club. And no, it's not a form of torture, you ain't gotta keep going for eternity, just until you hit the ground.

Interpol – Mammoth Lyrics 17 years ago
Not particularly a reference. They did to revisit lyrical themes a lot. See how many times you can find mention of weights in Antics, or how many songs they have about the sea. Reuse of the number seven is comparatively inconsequential.

The Stooges – T.V. Eye Lyrics 17 years ago
Taking the the actual acronym out of consideration, this almosts sounds like a lovesong to a cameragirl, possibly videotaping a concert.

And yes, this is easily the best song on Fun House.

Elliott Smith – Happiness/The Gondola Man Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about a broken relationship that ends with a death. Naptime's explanation sounds pretty good, though I disagree that she killed him. That's not Elliott's style. The lines "there was nothing she could do until after / when his body'd been buried below" makes me think he might've killed himself when his infidelities came to a head.

I didn't really like Figure 8 at first, and this song kid of floated under the radar every time I listened to it. It wasn't until last month, I was on the backseat of the car on the way to Texas for my little brother's funeral (he'd killed himself, actually) and I was listening to this song, and it just suddenly struck me. I have no idea what I'd missed those first few months, but it had put everything in such perspective that this has become one of my favorite songs off one of my favorite albums.

Franz Ferdinand – You're The Reason I'm Leaving Lyrics 18 years ago
Jesus fucking Christ I am so sick of everyone thinking everything has to be about George fucking Bush. Yeah, the guy's not a wonderful president, but shut up already. Ever think it could be referring to a relationship that is going poorly, though both parties pretend it's not? Franz isn't even from America to begin with, why would they suddenly leave somewhere they aren't and blame Bush?

Now, the seond verse of this song does however remind me of Ian Curtis, though that's not necessarily qualifiable either.

My Chemical Romance – Under Pressure (with The Used) Lyrics 18 years ago
Man, I respect My Chemical Romance and all, but I know covers, guys, and this one doesn't exactly bring a lot to the table. 'Course, it's a pretty high standard to match, since "Under Pressure" is one of the All-Time Greatest Pop Songs.

The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics 18 years ago
This song really reminds me of David Bowie's "Queen Bitch". They're both basically about the same thing, plus there's the similarity in these lines:

Queen Bitch:
"And I'm phoning a cab
'Cause my stomach feels small"

Mr. Brightside:
"And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick"

The fact these lines have basically the same notes and rhythms doesn't hurt the comparison none.

This entry is uner the wrong song title. The correct entry is here.
And I don't get what people didn't like about Lullabies To Paralyze. It was a great, heavy album, and this song was a nice way of kicking it off.

The Beatles – We Can Work It Out Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is funny. I mean, sure, on the SURFACE it's all about resolution and making peace, that's what most people think it's about, but once you get under the skin it's basically saying 'yeah, let's stop fighting, though you're a little cocksucker son of a bitch who's WRONG.'
Powerful stalemate, right it is.

If I remember corrently, I heard once that Paul and John had some disagreement while writing this song, as John'd come up with this chorus and was unhappy when Paul added on the verse. That's irony for you.

But basically this song is about a tussle Paul'd gotten in with his then-lady Jane Asher. Paul being rather the male chauvinist he was, he wanted a girl who'd be content to be with him, huge rock star he was. Jane was a tad too liberated for his sake. So he tries to work it out, but misses the whole point of resolution, which is compromise, understanding.

Good on you, Paul.
