I haven't read all the comments so this may have already been discussed, but I guess drug abuse is too obvious isn't it? I have read Anthony Keidis' book Scar Tissue, and in the chapter when he's on drugs, it sounds very mihc like he's been all-consumed and controlled by the drug. I agree that the song refers to some kind of madness but I believe that it's a drug-induced madness. If you read the lyrics, the "faded pictures on the wall, it's like they're talking to me" indicates a kind of paranoid insanity. Not a very deep interpretation, but that's what it means to me. This song reminds me of my relationship at times! :) Sometimes my boyfriend is great and we're really happy but then he just goes crazy and "tries to mess up a good thing." While this song is about a fairly stressful situation, the way its sung and the music with it makes it a bit lighter. It's cool, I love it. |

Awesome song. I love Suze De Marchi's voice in this, it's really gravelly and cool. I partially agree with antmann but I think it's also about a girl being in love with this guy but he won't fully commit to her. I read Anthony Kiedis' autobiography, Scar Tissue and he said that he wrote the song about Jaime Rishar. She was young and he was doing drugs and just cuasing her so much pain. She supported him and he just abused it. He knew that he should've stopped doing the drugs out of respect for Jaime but he couldn't, hence Breaking the Girl. I think that you were on the right track about him recognising a trait in himself that isn't very nice but he also didn't want to give it up. |

I don't think think this is their worst album. It IS emtoional and it IS raw. I think there needed to be at least a few solos in there, it gets a bit repetitive without them. I think people have high expectatuions of the band. They will never make another 'Black' album, and it's unfair to expect that they will. I wasn't a huge fan of the Chili Peppers until I read the book and now I just have a whole new appreciation for what they've been through to get where they are now.
