Toby Keith – Love Me If You Can Lyrics 16 years ago
Toby Keith said this about the song:

I get roped into these political arguments, but the truth is I don't see things right or left, I see them right or wrong. If you put check boxes on the left and right for all the big issues, my list will go back and forth all the way down. But all I have to do is disagree with a hardcore, far left liberal on one thing and they just mark me down with all the boxes on the right. And it's pretty much the same thing on the other side.

That song says exactly how I feel about myself in the world. I have to deal with other celebrities assuming all my marks are in one column, and all it shows me is that most of those people are very uneducated. For instance, Sean Penn was accepting a humanitarian award from a freedom of speech organization recently and said Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Toby Keith should be held accountable now that the Iraq war has gone astray. He's lumping me in with these guys when my song clearly, word for word, indicated my support for the invasion of Afghanistan.

Now the difference between me and Sean Penn is that I've talked to 50 generals. I doubt he's even talked to one. I didn't support the war in Iraq and still don't, but I'm sure I know more about it than he does. When he and Clooney get together and say we should go to Africa and stop the genocide, I'll be the one over there performing for the troops when it happens.

Dave Matthews Band – The Dreaming Tree Lyrics 18 years ago
After listening to this song for years it occured to me recently that the Dreaming Tree represents God. The lines:
" Conquered fear to climb
A moment froze in time
When the girl who first he kissed
Promised him she’d be his"
are about man destroying the Dreaming Tree or God for the sake of progress and then bieng betrayed by progress later in the song.
and the lines:
"Will you not talk?
Can you take pity?
I don’t ask much
But won’t you speak, please?
Take me back, take me back, take me back…
Save me please."
Seem to speak for themselves.

I think also the song draws a parallel between the drug dealer and the devil, the addiction and sin.

I don't know why, but I get a sort of Dave Matthews vibe off this song. It might be the similiar lyrics: Dreaming Tree, Summer days, winter snows, Rain, ect. but I always think of Dave Matthews when I hear this song.

This is a great song, I think it is about the battle of Antietam which had more casualties in one day than any other battle in the Civil War. Antietam is often referred to as "the longest day".

I do not think this is exactly about evolution, animals nor humans choose to evolvle. If you look at the lyrics for the live version he says; who made us this way?

The live Down from the Mountain version is incredible. The song recounts some of the basic themes of Christianity.

" We will not heed the voice of the stranger

Dave Matthews Band – Cortez the Killer (Neil Young cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow that's impressive... though I would not expect any sort of historical accuracy from Neil Young he said this was from a dream he had, not anything he read. I think Cortez was a ruthless murderer but who's to say the Aztecs were any better?

Dave Matthews – Dodo Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the title Dodo fits the song wonderfuly. The Dodo birds lived on their little island playing by the rules and minding their own business..and look what happened to them. The sailors that proved the world was not flat landed on their island and did not play by the rules. It's an excellent opening to an album.

Dave Matthews – Grey Blue Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song like Trouble is Dave Matthews asking for Gods' grace. I think it is about his alienation from God because of his sisters murder. You can make this assumption because he says"stone, stone as pulled me down". The song: The Stone is about his sisters murder and the stone is her gravestone which has alienated him. This song like most of the songs on the album are especially religious, this song is of course followed by Save Me.

Ryan Adams – Words Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a great song off the second Elizabethtown Soundtrack. Ryan Adams wrote and performed this song for Camerone Crowe who directed Elizabethtown. A note on this song is Ryan Adams has always listed Nick Drake as an influence, and I think this song might be the closest Ryan Adams' style has been to Nick Drake.

Neil Young – No Wonder Lyrics 18 years ago
Strikingly similiar to Neil Youngs work in the 70's but with a more dark and mature tone. This song reflects the general tone of memories and mortality that is found throughout the album. During the song he mentions problems in our society like corruption, 9-11, fuel dependancy, the war, and the environment. This song might even be an overview of his life anchored by his agnostism and the passing of time, or as he puts it ("moving away from the pain").

David Gray – Real Love Lyrics 18 years ago
I think that this song is realizing he wants more than love, Real Love
He wants something that is not fake as world is. He wants something eternal, incorruptable, unchanging. He says he is bound to this world and all it's feelings but he wants more. He then refers to Eden which I think shows that he is in a more religious mindset than romantice.

Dave Matthews Band – Cortez the Killer (Neil Young cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is a bit confusing. The Aztec empire was based on expansion by war. The temples were built by thousands of slaves who would later be sacrificed upon them. I can see the pity for what was lost but it really wasa rather terrible, no matter how the song portrays it.
