| I think what fools people into thinking this is a romantic song is that Jakob Dylan (and his vocal delivery) is so effortlessly smoldering. Read the words though and there’s nothing sexual at all.\n\nTo me, anyway, the song is pretty clearly sung from the perspective of a touring musician who is lonely and missing his kids, but every show he plays - probably later at night while they’re asleep if they’re little - brings him a little bit closer to seeing them again.\n\nThe first two verses are textbook lonesomeness - feeling so numb to the world that you think you could hear a whisper in a crowded space because all the stimuli seem so blunted. Time stretching out and all you can do is stare and be lonely.\n\nThe second two verses are even more clear in the meaning though. He’s clearly despairing at his kids getting older while he’s gone. He understands that when time goes it’s gone forever and he won’t get it back. He won’t hear his children cry like little babies or laugh like little kids anymore once they’re big. And he has all the understandable typical feelings you’d have in that scenario - he thinks he’s failing them, all he wants is to be with them when they need him, and he’s afraid they’ll resent him for it or give up on him. | |

This is a great song. The basic meaning isn't hard to figure out, as it's probably about a past failed relationship. It could have something to do with the narrator doing his best to force this girl from hsi mind, and keep from thinking about her. When he happens to actually see her again, he realizes how quick their whole relationship went by, and is almost surprised to realize she still exists. That's just a quick analisys(sp?). Upon deeper inspection, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find the true meaning behind each line. |

Yeah... Irony would be the like the fact that my girlfriend and I broke up the day we were supposed to get E-married... So yeah, someone decided to rain on my wedding day for sure. I like the song, and the way she purposely misuses the word ironic... I think this entire song, especially the lyrics about the man of her dreams are a way for Alanis to say "Well rain on my parade why don't you..." Or the way I say it... "Well just go ahead and pi** on my bandanna". Because I think this song refers to her in alot of ways. |

Well said Griever. COmplexity is fine and everything, but musicians, such as my **hole cousin Branden, say that everything other than Steve Vai, Ozzy Osbourne, and Van-Halen sucks because it's not complex. Instrumentalists slike music that has good playing, however, POETS such asm yself appreciate deep LYRICS, which unfortunately Van-halen and Metallica don't have. Besides, to say a song is BETTER than another, just because you like it is the epitome of hubrice. Different songs are better ofr different people. It's your preference. |

"A long long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance. And mayb they'd be happy for awhile." This is referring to Don's dreams of being a musician. or something. "But February made me shiver With every paper I'd deliver Bad news on the doorstep I couldn't take one more step" This is obviously referring to February 3rd, 1953 (if I remember correctly), the day that Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens dies in that plane crash. "I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride But something touched me deep inside The day the music died." Many may not know it, but Buddy Holly was married, and I think he even had a kid on the way. I'm not sure baout that though, so don't quote me. People have referred to Buddy Holly's death as "the day the music died." "So Bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my chevy to the levee But the levee was dry." The plain in which Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper died was named "American Pie." The chevy line, I can't figure out though. "And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die." This is referring to a Buddy Holly song, in which he says the words. "That'll be the day that I die." "Did you write the Book of Love And do you have faith in God above If the Bible tells you so Do you believe in rock 'n roll Can music save your mortal soul And can you teach me how to dance real slow." I have absolutely no idea. "Well, I know that you're in love with him 'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym You both kicked off your shoes Man, I dig those rhythm and blues." This is referring to a popular dance around that era, known as the sock hop. And also the fact that caucasian teens were getting involved with African american music, such as blues. "I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck With a pink carnation and a pickup truck But I knew I was out of luck The day the music died." If I'm not mistaken, a pickup truck was a symbol of sexuality or something. I started singin' {chorus} "Now for ten years we've been on our own And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone But that's not how it used to be." Okay, this seems to be a personal shot at Mick Jagger. "When the jester sang for the King and Queen In a coat he borrowed from James Dean And a voice that came from you and me." The jester is Bob Dylan. On one of his album covers, Dylan wore a jacket similar to one worn by James Dean. Also, the voice that came from you and me is folk music. ".Oh, and while the King was looking down The jester stole his thorny crown The courtroom was adjourned No verdict was returned." This has something to do with Bob Dylan stealing the spotlight while Elvis was in his downtime. "And while Lennon [Lenin?] read a book of Marx The quartet practiced in the park And we sang dirges in the dark The day the music died." Something to do with the Beatles, I believe. We were singing {Refrain} "Helter Skelter in a summer swelter The Byrds flew off with a fallout shelter Eight miles high and falling fast." Yet another Beatles reference. If I'm not mistaken, there was a beatles line that went something like "Falling fast but miles above you." Also, I think the Byrds have something to with Charles Manson. "It landed foul out on the grass The players tried for a forward pass With the jester on the sidelines in a cast." Something about Bob Dylan's motorcycle accident. "Now the half-time air was sweet perfume." Drugs, man. "While the Sergeants played a marching tune We all got up to dance Oh, but we never got the chance 'Cause the players tried to take the field The marching band refused to yield Do you recall what was revealed The day the music died." I frogot what this line was about, but yet again I think it had something to do with the Beatles. We started singing {Refrain} "Oh, and there we were all in one place A generation Lost in Space With no time left to start again So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick." Jack Flash sat on a candlestick. Cause fire is the devil's only friend." Another shot at Mick Jagger, and the comment that the generation of the sixties lost much of their lives because of the drugs. They couldn't remember half of what happened. Also, It might have something to do with the space landing. "Oh, and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage No angel born in hell Could break that Satan's spell And as the flames climbed high into the night To light the sacrifical rite I saw Satan laughing with delight The day the music died." Another reference ot Mick. Mick is satan in this song, there's no doubt about it. THis is referring to the murder of Meredith Hunter, at a Stones concert where the Hell's Angels were working security. He was singing {Refrain} "I met a girl who sang the blues And I asked her for some happy news But she just smiled and turned away." Janis Joplin. "I went down to the sacred store Where I'd heard the music years before But the man there said the music woudn't play." This is about the fact that music stored stopped letting people preview the records. "And in the streets the children screamed The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed But not a word was spoken The church bells all were broken." The dead musicians, and rock and roll had become in Don's eyes. "And the three men I admire most The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost They caught the last train for the coast The day the music died." Catching a train for the coast is a metaphor for dying. You could say this has something to do with the fact that after Buddy Holly died, was when the morality of music slowly began diminishing. And they were singing {Refrain} They were singing bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my chevy to the levee But the levee was dry Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die So, pretty good huh? |

Okay, I'm not going to get involved in the political debate here, because it's distracting us from what we hsould REALLY be talking about. I agree with oldskoolrockerJTS, concerning the complexity issue. Complexity defines the skill of the bands at playing their instruments, but as a poet, I appreciate lyrics also. And whether it's ocmplex or not, I like their sound. We should all be talking about how much we LOVE Green Day, not about politicalcrap. Come on, we obviously all have something in common, so let's try to get along, we'll all be happier for it. |
