| Loreena McKennitt – Dante's Prayer Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Uh. Lugh's the name of ancient Celtic god. That's pretty irrelevant to this song, but... *shakes head sadly* | |
| Concrete Blonde – Caroline Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I can't remember where I read it, but I remember reading saying that this song is about a stripper (named Caroline, obviously). This may not be true at all, I don't know. Regardless, I love this song. : } | |
| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Stargazer Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
This is probably my favourite SatB song. To me, it is about the longing to escape from one's emotional difficulty, while at the same time appreciating the obscure beauty of the situation, the tragic and unique loveliness of one's own suffering. "So weary this strait-jacket dreamer So resigned to continue to suffer But you've learnt that as you grow weaker There's less hurt because there's much less to hurt" Though the person is weary of suffering, she can still appreciate the security her suffering brings. So much is being taken from her, so there is little left for her to lose. There is safety in her depression, as it is familiar. She is afraid to be happy or "normal" because has never known either. "Stargazer reach out to touch With your mind that frees you so much Stargazer kissing your kismet With bright jewel encrusted scars" Though the person's mind is suffering, it is her only escape from reality, thus her "mind that frees" her so much. The mention of the scars reminds me, on a personal note, of self-injury. But in terms of the theme of the song, it goes well. Though the scars are reminders of her sadness and inability to escape, they are, in their own strange way, beautiful (jewel encrusted). |

| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Premature Burial Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Yes, there's a short story by Edgar Allan Poe of the same title. Being buried alive is a motif frequently found in Poe's stories, which seems to represent the powerlessness and misery of an internal struggle. In Poe's case, this struggle was depression and alcoholism. | |
| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Placebo Effect Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I've read that Siouxsie somewhat distrusts members of the medical profession and that seems to be shown here. On a personal level though, I interpret this song as a criticism of how heavily medicated people are today, particularly those afflicted by mental illnesses. "Staying alive at five For you to cure my ailments Another soul is saved With your bogus medications" This reminds me of the way physicians tend to dole out prescriptions to depressed patients, for example, as though the medication was a magical potion that will make everything all better, despite the fact that so many antidepressants have horrible side-effects. |

| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Red Light Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Seems to be a criticism of the fashion world. | |
| Siouxsie and the Banshees – Arabian Knights Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I don't see this as Siouxsie lashing out against Arab culture in general, but at the way women in the Arab world are sometimes treated. Siouxsie has never struck me as a racist person, but I could see how an assertive and intelligent Western woman like Siouxsie would be disgusted and upset by the abuses many women in Arabic countries suffer. However, I am not sure that this is all this song is really about in a thematic sense. SatB songs tend to have more complex meanings than what appears on the surface. "Hong Kong Garden" has been called a racist song, for example, but the truth is that it is exactly the opposite. | |
| Otep – Buried Alive Lyrics | 21 years ago |

by A7X1234 on 03-22-2005 @ 02:04:59 AM BABEL??? I'm confused. In the Bible, there's a story about people trying to build a tower called the Tower of Babel that would reach all the way up to Heaven. By doing this, they were defying God, so God caused everyone to start speaking different languages. No one could understand each other because each person had their own language. |

| Otep – Blood Pigs Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Yeah, it seems to me like a revolt against opportunists and betrayers, those who deceive, manipulate, and use others without any remorse... | |
| Otep – Menocide Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Hamstertube, settle down. Seriously. Firstly, "Menocide" is not to be taken literally, obviously. Secondly, the fact reminds to this day that women -are- oppressed in many countries around the world. Perhaps it is not as common nor as blatant here in the western world, but look at all of the other nations where women are still considered less than human. Notice how this song mentions female circumcision and burnings? These things and countless other atrocities still happen everyday throughout the world. Women are tortured and slaughtered for the slightest deviation from subserviance. Open your fucking eyes. If you think a song like this constitutes Nazi-like behaviour, take a look at the fascist androcentric regimes that still thrive in our world. One cannot compare this song's message with that of Eminem's music. This is a political song, in my not so humble opinion, and there is nothing political or intellectual to be found in "smackin' bitches" or whatever crap with which you were vainly attempting to equate this. | |
| Placebo – I'll Be Yours Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I agree with BrilliantSavvy. This is one of the most loving songs I've heard. To me it seems to be about the way love can be a better escape than any drug in the world. | |
