It clearly shows the illogical and useless boundaries religion puts on peoples' lives.
In an interview, Alanis herself said that this song is about rejecting Catholocism and that the line "My brothers they never went blind for what they did
But I may as well have" is about the Catholic church (and christianity in general) fooling poeple into thinking masturbation will make you blind; something the Catholic church often tells its followers will happen, and yet no one does go blind.
