The total U.S. box office gross was just under $830,000.\r\n\r\nIn January 1992, reviewing the theatrical version of the film, Roger Ebert gave the film 2 stars out of 4, describing it as lacking the "narrative urgency" required to sustain interest in the story, and wrote that it "plays like a film that was photographed before it was written, and edited before it was completed". He went on to say that a documentary about the globe-trekking production would likely have been more interesting than the film itself.\r\n\r\nHardly a successful picture... |

First Aid Kit – The Bell Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Lyric correction: Don't place your bets on me I'm tired and I'm only With nothing to offer you Nothing to offer you The pavement stares gray and cold Our lives are a story told Coming to an ending It's coming to an ending How could I turn around? Face the sound of the bell that chimes Ring it out, trim it out To drag me back down But I'm not coming home Been out here for so long The road just stretches on Till I stop pretending Till I stop pretending But the world is an empty frame And now you are just a name I'll keep it that way It's staying that way How could I turn around Face the sound of the bell that chimes Ring it out, trim it out To drag me back down But I'm not coming home I tried hard to be brave I tried hard not to be afraid But trying wasn't enough I tried hard to be brave I tried hard not to be afraid But trying wasn't enough I'm sorry, I'm sorry Can you hear the bell Can you hear the bell The bell, the bell Can you hear the bell Can you hear the bell The bell, the bell From the rust that lies deep in it's throat I hear solemn monotone tones The danger, the ebbs and the flows In the silence of night he lets me know That I'm not coming home |

It's proper musical insights like this that are sadly lacking from this site. Thank you |
R.E.M. – What's the Frequency, Kenneth? Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Would that therefore not be the irony? |
Tim Minchin – Dark Side Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Agree with Sunnyside. It's all in the performance. Minchin is a total one-off. Brilliant. |

Monty Python – One Foot In The Grave Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Quick correction: And my knees are starting to knock, I've just got too many miles on the clock. This isn't really Python, it's the theme tune to long-running British sitcom, One Foot In The Grave, which is hilarious. This song was written and performed by Eric Idle. |
R.E.M. – Until The Day Is Done Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song sounds to me like a cross between 'Working Class Hero' by John Lennon, and 'Masters of War' by Bob Dylan - both lyrically and musically. |
Gift Horse Mouth – Big American Cars (You Ain't Never Gonna Make It In Memphis) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Its bloody brilliant!! |
R.E.M. – The One I Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Sitting Still from Murmur- there first album contains the line "Set a trap for LOVE...", released four years prior to this |
R.E.M. – Disturbance At The Heron House Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think that Stipe here has taken George Orwell's classic novel 'Animal Farm' which is a humourous allegory of the Russian Revolution, and set it in a zoo. |
R.E.M. – The One I Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
There seems to be a little confusion here. It's actually the only REM (album) song to date with "Love" in the TITLE, not lyrics. |
R.E.M. – So. Central Rain Lyrics | 19 years ago |
A man (Stipe) waiting for a phone call from a loved one, who was trying to get in touch but "the lines were down" due to the rain. |
R.E.M. – Perfect Circle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
PS- About the kids playing touch-football in the twilights- "Eleven shadows way out of place,"!! Kind of emotive eh? |
R.E.M. – Perfect Circle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is an incredibly moving tune. I figure it may be about wishing your life away, or finding yourself suddenly an adult with responsibilities when seemingly only yesterday you felt like a child still. "Standing too soon"? Or perhaps a loss of innocence before being mature enough to make that step. Apparently, Michael Stipe said it's just a song about an ex-girlfriend. Peter Buck claims they were on tour in '81, and staying in a motel. He was stood at the door of his cabin during twilight and watching a group of kids play touch-football. According to Mr Buck he was so moved by it that he cried for hours, and asked Michael to capture that emotion. Mike Mills said the feeling he wanted to capture in the song was when you're staying in a strange hotel room and it's late at night, and somewhere in the far distance, you here a train go past. And after I heard ALL those interpretations, on VH-1 Storytellers in 1999, Michael Stipe said it was actually written by former drummer Bill Berry!!! ...So who knows? |
R.E.M. – New Test Leper Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I heard it was about an AIDS sufferer on a TV Talk Show. |
R.E.M. – Monty Got A Raw Deal Lyrics | 19 years ago |
* you LIVE and learn as well, I guess! Sorry! |
R.E.M. – Monty Got A Raw Deal Lyrics | 19 years ago |
So does this song in some way relate to "Exhuming McCarthy" from Document? I wasn't aware Clift was accused, but you leave and learn!! |
R.E.M. – Lotus Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I heard a story that if you eat a lotus, you forget everything that has ever happened to you up to that point in your life. But please correct me if I'm wrong!! Ps- Is the Lotus a mythical flower? |
R.E.M. – I Remember California Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Apparently the scenario Stipe imagined while writing the song was "What if Lex Luthor was victorious?" In Superman III, Luthor develops a plot to blow California off the map, but of course, Superman saves the day. In this song, Michael is imagining that California HAD been destroyed, and is mourning its absence. |
R.E.M. – Gardening At Night Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Apparently "Gardening At Night" was, according to Michael the first "proper" song REM wrote. Gardening at Night is a metaphor for working for something unattainable, doing a pointless chore. I read somewhere that Peter Buck once had a neighbour with this unusual habit! |
R.E.M. – Fretless Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This was written as a soundtrack for the incredibly poor movie "Until The End of The World" which flopped disasterously. Only a few seconds of the song appear. I often had the feeling that the song was about a man who was having an affair with a married couple, but neither partner knows what the other is doing. And even though the protagonist is having great fun, he still feels alone and used at the end of the day. Regarding amlethus' query about E-A-C, in my opinion, that line- "Reach for peace with an E-A-C" is emphasising which kind of peace (as opposed to P-I-E-C-E) which could be construed as a gun. Reach for the peace as opposed to reach for the PIECE! A great clarification!! Brilliantly moving song. I'm assuming the female vocalist is Patti Smith, but can anyone confirm that? |
